    horror warning

NEW ORLEANS - Rocking your baby to sleep in a mechanical swing may trigger a deadly attack on the child by the family dog, a coroner warns.

At least two such deaths have been documented in Maryland over a four-year period, Dr. Albert Chu of the state's medical examiner's office said yesterday at a conference in New Orleans. The back-and-forth motion may activate the dog's instinct to chase prey, he said.

In 2003, a 2-week-old boy was dragged from his swing and killed by the family's pit bull in Baltimore. In Edgemere, Md., in 1999, a 3-month-old boy was mauled to death as his parents slept in another room.

Catherine Mills, a Marshall, N.C., dog trainer, said pets should be conditioned to ignore baby swings before a baby is put into one.

Hmmmm....my son used a rocker. Went through 2 or 3 actually. Never bothered the dogs in the least. I wouldn't want to have to 'condition' my dog to the swing. I shouldn't have to with this breed. Thos dogs didn't attack because of their prey drive. Those were unstable dogs to begin with, IMO. Thanks for the article though (and the GA pit bull ban article).

well that shows the resopnsibility of the owners "a 3 month old mauled to death while parents were sleeping in another room" who in their right mind would leave a 3 month old unsupervised in a swing to begin with especially to go in antoher room to go to sleep.

on the other hand it is good they give warnings, to warn people that do not have dogs as good as some.

  6. I was thrown off by this article. None of the happenings are new (from 2003 & 1999) but it was just printed on 02-24-05. I think they are still just trying to push Pits as BAD DOGS. Anything and everything. Also, I have firm belief that some people should be fixed like animals are.
