i'm trying to sell a started catch dog, male, not da, can get papers, and i don't have any idea what to ask for him........

  2. A life times worth of meals.

Honestly, it's a buyer driven market and who knows what people are thinking these days. I wouldn't expect more then a few hundred ($100-$300) and that's if he stands out.

Its hard to say, a real good one that you can use around other dogs is worth what some one will pay but 500 is a fair price if he is smart. J

I'm not familiar with the hunting of feral hogs with APBT's enough to know what one would go for.

Instead, I'd like to pose a question for those who are. Hypothetically what kind of money, is someone going to pay for a 3 year old, proven catchdog off proven lines? I've heard it said before, everytime you come out of the woods with all the dogs, it's a good day. You're running a very high risk of losing dogs, hunt fairly frequently, and aren't bringing home much of a value in meat. For this reason, I am having a hard time fathoming people spending the money they did on proven match dogs for this survivalist hunt. But, I don't know, thats why I ask.

Usually between 100$ and $300 like they said above. A very exceptional one might go for $500. But that is very rare that someone will give that much because a catchdogs life is usually very short. Some of the hog hunters will spend a grand or more on a Dogo, but they wont go that high on a bulldog. Most of the time, they will make a catchdog out of gamedog culls, because you do not want dog aggression in a catchdog.

    Location, location, location.

What folks are willing to spend is usually dictated by the location they live in. For example, in OH., you will often get a much higher price than in MS., simply b/c the average Joe in OH., makes more & has more $$$ to spend on a dog.

That being said, for an unregistered proven catch dog, I'd guesstimate you'd be looking at a value of about $200 - $500 depending how good the dog is, where you live & who wants it. If the dog is registered ADBA & off good bloodlines the price could jump up to $500 - $1000.

Also, I forgot to add - a catch dog (CD) title will increase the dog's worth as well. I can't remember the club that was doing it, at one time if your dog battled a hog for a certain amount of time with witnesses present you could get a CDI, CDII or CDIII title on your dog. I don't know if they still do it, but if they did, a CD title would certainly increase the price you could ask for the dog.

I am located in N.E. MS. I myself do not "hunt." I am allergic to pork, so it would be pointless for me to hunt hogs. lol. A neighbor did the hunting. I just like the catching & battling part since it gave me a chance to work my dogs.

We also used to have hog-dog rodeos all over MS., but sadly, the PETA-heads made them illegal. :(

Started catch dogs are a dime a dozen around here, and the finished ones are about the same.

Most hog hunters take dogs who for what ever reason, don't fit a breeders program. Most breeders had rather give the dogs a chance at hunting rather then put them down.

It only takes about 5 mins to train a bulldog to catch a hog, it either will or it won't. I have never seen a bulldog that wouldn't catch with in the first 2 mins of being run on a hog, turn out to be any good. Most are naturals and catch immediatly, so its not like there is a lot of training that goes into them.
The expense is keeping and caring for them if they get hurt hunting.
I have seen very few, that require more then a few stitches come out of the woods.
I wouldn't spend money on the purchase of a catch dog personally, because chances are he may only last a few hunts in the woods.

You are right But there is a big difference between a catchdog and a REAL good huntercatch dog. one that stays out of harm and seems to know just how to stop a big boar. I would not have taken any amout of money for my old dixie or duke they were the best I have ever seen. I have never seen as good yet and if I do I will pay what ever. J

i always run a vest on my bulldogs, don't send em to a bay without it, now i've got a catahoula that kinda eliminates the need for a catchdog though... that and just about everybody i hunt with has a bulldog, so i hardly ever take a bulldog anymore, they can be a pain in the ass when you are trying to wade through a marsh, or get through a briar patch to run to a bay.
i've done some hunting in the ms delta around vicksburg in twin oaks wma. i don't really care much for the meat, would rather eat venison any day, i just love the hunt, hearing the dogs bay, hearing pigs squeal, boars grunting... love the chase, and the thrill, the adreniline when a big hog dang near runs you over....

Dixe died over 15 years ago she lived very old about 12 or 14 I think she was a great dog very good with children but loved to hunt I didnt even need bay dogs she would run in front of the truck and cut off then you better not be half cocked. old duke is very old I let my youngest girl claim him as hers now He sleeps in the bed and loves her . hes over 12 now I had to get him spade due to the cancer witch is very sad to me He was off the last breeding of Jigger and Cherry bomb and was the last living son He threw some of the best dogs I ever seen and was the tightest Happyjack-Bullyson dog Around that I know of. They will allways have a spot in my hart and are the kind of dogs I Judge dogs from. Yis J

    $200-$300

Doesn't matter what bloodline, if it's registered, or if the dog has caught several hundred head of hogs. It is rare when a hunter will pay more than that for a catchdog.

There are no longer any catchdog organizations...so catchdog titles are a thing of the past. Plus, those titles really didn't mean too much anyway. A bulldog should catch....period.

A finished hound or cur will go for anywhere between $1000-$5000

IMO what the dog is worth is what someone is willing to pay. Specific, huh?.

    yep thats true

i traded him for a young catahoula male, just started, really gritty, but i like a good gritty catahoula, now i need a new strike dog, my strike dog is getting old lol, or train this male catahoula to be a good strike dog, but that seems harder than training a hound.....

I saw the post about hog catch dogs and was wondering if anyone had any opinions on the U.H.D.A. o A. If treadmills and breaking sticks are sold at the adba shows, how can they be used as "evidence" for dog fighting? Can joining the U.H.D.A. really protect the people who own mills and breaking sticks?? I also was wanting to know if it legal to advertise gamebred dogs for hog hunting purposes? I have seen some articles about "hog-dog rings" busted. If hog hunting is legal, how can people get in legal trouble for it?

Hog Hunting is Legal, hog "catch" compititions are not.

In my opinion the UHDA is a waste of money.

Treadmills and breaking sticks are only illegal, if your "intent" for haveing them is to use them is activities that are illegal,(i.e. dogfighting).

Good luck! We usually use American Bulldogs or Catahoula Bulldogs as catchdogs as most of our APBTs are just too DA to work well with other dogs. However, I love having a nice 45-50 lb APBT showing other dogs how it's supposed to be done.

And have fun training that Catahoula. I lost a young male a while back after 2 hogs split and went it different directions and his stubborn self decided to follow one while all the other dogs chased the other. Catahoulas are definitely thinkers and you have to make them want to follow your orders by showing them how beneficial obeying you would be to them. Darn dogs..............:D
