He is a 5xW Gr. CH. campaigned at 47 lbs. Of his 5 wins two were over dogs that were already Ch.'s and he was voted Best In Show twice. His longest match went 58 minutes. His owner who went by the code name Gambler in the 80's/90's is still around, and does shows, anti-BSL apearances, etc. He has made a positive name for himself in the dog world as far as I know. Just hit ctrl+F from that link and search for gambler...and you'll see virgil about 3/4 down the page. He was voted dog of the decade for the 90's by the sporting dog journal, and legend has it that he was bought in a flea market. I don't how true that is because in the peds I've seen on him he has some colby on the sires side, and alot of crenshaw bred dogs (jeep, honeybunch, rascal) on the bottom. I found the text where I was sending anyone interested in that Rios link. Like I said it's in several places on the web, and I don't know who had the original content...I'll post it here also.

The Gambler purchased Virgil, at the Valley Traders Market, which is something along the lines of a country flea market, where folks get together to sell a variety of different items, many of which would not be found in the average department store. One of the traders at this particular market had four, three month old Pit bull pups for sale. This fellow had been raising a few bulldogs, from time to time, but had never shown a dog, or was involved in the sport in any way. The Gambler had a partner at the time and they purchased one of the pups each, for $350.00, $175.00 a piece. The partner didn't remain all that interested in the dogs and when the pups was about 8 months old he sold his share in the dogs to Gambler.

Virgil was a fairly easy going pup, but became almost uncontrollable when he got excited, and on one occasion, while the 10 month old pup was in a rage, tried to bite the Gambler, and actually torn the shirt off of Gambler's back as he tried to get away from the angry pup. Gambler thought very seriously about putting the dog down, but instead decided to roll him. Evidently he liked what he saw and by the tender age of just over 18 months, Virgil became a 1X winner.

Gr Ch Virgil- 47lb class
1) NLK's Corrupt in :22 min. (BOS)
2) Tant's Geronimo in :36 min.
3) HGK's Big Al in :55 min. (BOS)
4) Falcon's Ch Dingo in :58 min. at 49lbs. During this match Virgil suffered severe damage to his front left leg and had to win this one on three wheels.
5) Crunch's Ch Miester(4x) in :45 min.

I had asked an eye-witness to Virgil's last match about how he looked to him, and he said he didn't look in the best of conditioning for this match and said he looked just average. I then informed him of the damage he suffered to his left leg and the fact that he couldn't be conditioned properly due to his leg. He then went on to say Meister's handler was intimidated by another dog man, in the Gambler's camp, who told them to pick up their dog, which they did. I then got in contact with the person who told them to pick up their dog and he said he told them to "pick up their dog...if they wanted to save him."

Gambler's Gr. Ch. Virgil was voted AGDT dog of the decade, Sporting Dog Journal Dog Of The Year 1999, and Bulldog Revelation Dog Of The Year 1998 & 1999.

 

Is this the same dog as Ozzie Steven's Gr. Ch. Virgil?

Now for informational, educational, and historical purposes, and in no way intented to violate , or promote violation of the animal welfare act of 1976 and / or subsequent revisions of said act. Not posted for any illegal purposes. Hypothectical scenario, based on pure rumor.
It was very hard in those days to get a rub past a noob, let alone vet.You are generally allowed 5 people per side. (IF NEGOTIATED IN CONTRACT) The 5 generally consist, but not limited to;
1) The Handler
2) The Second (as in level of importance..(More on him later)
3) The Medic
4) The owner
5) The Breeder
All others are not allowed, unless $ubjected to show's promoter's approval. Now one person can hold 4 positions , as well as show promoter. This frees up spaces for free admission. (Particulary when travelling with basic entourage.)
Now the athletes were washed and wieghed. This consisted of a thorough soap and water washing. (GENERALLY, although flea bath was also used in conjunction.) They were then thoroughly rinsed. They were then thoroughly washed with alchohol as an astringent, to get any foriegn substances missed by the soap and water / flea bath washing, as well as remove the taste. Finally, the athletes were washed in milk, to remove the taste of the alchohol. The athletes are then "TASTED", by rubbing the athletes and licking the used fingers, and biological sampling (Your taste buds) the finished wash.The competing athlete's handler usually preformed these task on the opposing athlete. This was usually because he had the largest stake (Of course in his eyes) in seeing that the opponent was free of damaging toxins, that would negatively affect his athlete. The minumun of $upport (commonly referred to as a "WORKING MAN's Wager) was $300. (Usually $500 -$1,000) This was considered a significant enough amount to
ensure matches were authentic, and well prepared. The logic being, that amount was too substantial to be taken lightly. Large contingents of $upport upfront, led to larger purses. While back end $supporter$ contributed to other $upport$ on $how night. This was where the major of $upport was generally seen. (Commonly refferred to as: ("$IDE BET$")
The second's job , is to watch his althlete while his handler washes the opposing athlete. (Usually the second will wash if he is a proven washer.) Now a second who is a veteran (or handler) will generally cheat in this way:
A long, sustained wash on the opposing athlete. He will wash last if he can. Meaning, no simultainous wash was specified in the contract, and absent a coin toss. (Commonly referred to as "BRODYing", "PLAYING", "PUNKING", "INTIMIDATING", etc..) He is massaging the muscles, of the opposing athlete into a subtle, exhaustion, minutes before competion. This is legal, but the experianced handler would object, and put a stop to this ASAP. ("THE DAY BEFORE YESTARDAY") The initial negotiating principle party (USUALLY THE CLUB) will specify the time washed. This is balanced by the fact , each party is resposible for thier own althletes supplies. Including milk. If your athlete fails the opposing handler's "TASTE TEST", as well as the ref's, a re-wash is called. (10 - 15 Gallons of each wash : milk = $$$)

$uportor$ watch every thing, with regard solely for thier own $upport, first, athlete / club support second.
At that level of competion and $upport, to many eyes are focused, if not from the wash (An event in it of itself), then from the total body taste taste, in full view of $upporter$, in the arena. The total body tasting, takes place after the wiegh in (Experianced handlers kept thier athletes as calm as possible, washing first, and wieghing in last when possible.) Every one watches specifically for the rub, even at the peril of missing the massage.

 

Excerpts from an email from a good friend of mine regarding Gambler's Virgil when I asked the difference between O.Stevens dog and Gamblers...

"Not the same dog. Two entirely different bloodlines. Gambler is an old friend of mine. I shared the couch many a night with Virgil. I don't know how many Ozzie's dog won but Gambler's won 5 contract matches making him a Grand Champion. He was a Sporting Dog Journal (then the bible of the pitbulls) Dog of the Year and American Gamedog Times Dog of the Year and Dog of the Decade. I have two offspring from him left. I think he's about 9 years old now and he's a house pet - however he was really always a house dog. "

"i still laugh at all the misconceptions out there with that dog. first, he was not purchased at some flea market. that story got going b/c gambler found an ad in a local "trader times" paper and the breeder in question had an ad in the paper. the papers on virgil are correct and he is scatterbred...but they most definitely know how he is bred. virgil was never "rubbed" and gambler never cheated...if he had, i would have had nothing to do with the guy. one kennel made the accusation w/o any proof. all the rest was rumor and innuendo. he was a legit gr ch."

 

Had a few down off him they were good dogs. Seen some off him that I didnt like. but for the most part seen just as many good as I seen bad.

 

A 50 / 50 breeding. Generally happens when you breed 1 high quality with a low qaulity. Instead of having %75 official , you have %50 showing the high quality, & %50 low quality. In this case I generally would pick (hypothectically) the pups that "LOOK", like the official. (Color, head etc.) knowing full well all I'm gauranteed to get is the coat or color gene.
