as to the original question IMO there is no replacement for the APBT. it stands alone on a plateau of perfection, loyalty, courage and strength with an inner glow of gameness. If someone wanted something different there are PLENTY of other breeds to choose from. from companion breeds to hunting breeds to protection breeds. there are similar looking breeds in each catagory as well. The only reason i see crossing an APBT is in an intense program to ressurect an extinct breed. the program is intense in purpose and Culling. like for example, if thre AB becmae strickyl showbred and lost its working ability for 90% of tht breed, a fancier takes the best of whats left and under the guide of a qualified mentor tries to bring backj what was lost and introduced APBT blood into the pool to help the health, but culling hard is employed.those type of scenerios i can see it being done , but thats the extreme exception. Each purebred dog is special in ts own way, no need to further destroy the legacy of the APBT by messing with these standards and balances.

I can't speak for them, but from a hunter's view point it could be for 1) size (figure they might like the 65-75 pound catchdogs) 2) less dog aggression 3) while I've seen a few AB's that use their nose, a Pit will definitely use theirs. If the bay breaks after the catchdog is released but before it gets there, most hunter's would prefer the catchdog come back to them instead of going hunting.

Personally, I prefer to keep my dogs purebred...but, I've seen plenty of good hunting dogs that were mixed breeds that produced as good or better than themselves and as good or better than their purebred counterparts.

With this, I disagree. The APBT is the ultimate canine athlete. It is well respected by every hog hunter that I know. If they cross breed with a pit, it's generally to add something to their dogs. To me, that only adds to the legacy.

I dont think APBT's should be crossed into other breeds EVER. Realone said it best "Mixing gold with copper".

With that being said, I have seen hunters that breed there own WORKING dogs with a blend of dogs. APBT being the base with dogs like greyhounds being added for certain traits like the speed they desire to hunt specific game. They also take away from the DA with the mixing of breeds.

  6. I agree...but they should try pure Bulldogs ( APBTs) :D

As to the start of this thread, I have at one time owned a 1/2 catahoula, 1/2 apbt. It was a great dog to take to the woods. It was a great dog to have period. It was not a lap dog, although it was affectionate, it was a working dog, and loved the hunt. It was NOT an APBT, and that was very apparant. Many folks around here have this type breeding and use them for hogs.

As to breeding for a smaller APBT, you (FK) had mentioned getting a 20# dog, well, you can get a full blooded 20# APBT. Why not get one of them? Most here dont believe in breeding for size, but like you said, to each their own. You could obtain a breeding pair of smaller bulldogs, and selectively breed the runts, an obtain a 15# APBT. Bad thing is that if you breed the apbt to a rat terrier, you will have a dog that has more size than the rat terrier, and who will be a man biter. Rat terriers around this part of the country will bite someone quicker than a chiuahua will! So, I am asking you to please think of us, and the breed. Half breed or not, one of them dogs bites someone, it is considered a Pitbull.

So true. You know there not going to look at the rat terrier side. Good post.

  9. Is this consider the same as the "Catahoula Bulldog?" I understood those to be the leopard curs mixed with Ambulldogs, but I guess some acheive that effect with the APBT.

I agree. imo, you can't improve, what i feel, is already the best! ;)
and true, when BSL comes rolling around, yeah, the new pitbull "designer" breed will also take the hit. won't matter how "small" or whatever, it will be.
and if you like small "pit bulls" obtain a 20 pounder. there's plenty of those already around.
there are enough stupid "designer" [IMG] (cripes i despise that word) breeds as there is. PLEASE leave the APBT alone.....
so, my answer is a strong 'no'. i would not breed outside of the APBT.

I would not because it is just like the people breeding the big dogs who they call Bullies or whatever they may call them. Also, I see more human aggression in dogs that are mixed with the APBT and whatever else....Besides...I am not breeding those darned DESIGNER BREEDS! There are enough dogs in the world than to breed more for no purpose.

Just my 2 cents, but people breeding unpapered dogs are just the same as breeding the pure APBT with a mixed breed. (EX. Male without papers to Female with papers, and Male with papers, to female without papers)

If I'm not mistaken the first Catahoula Bulldogs were cross made by Howard Carnathan to work cattle. They were 50/50 Catahoula and AB.

S.Eagle, I have never heard them called that. We just call them 1/2pitbull, 1/2 catahoula. These two have worked well together, for working purposes.

But apparantly I like my bulldogs straight up, as I have no half and half's over on my place. Personally I love my apbt's. Now, the only other thing I have here is my little girls dog. She was about 5 and she got frustrated about the pups. She would be able to play with them and have fun with them, till they got so old, and then she couldnt handle them, so one day she said, "daddy, I want a puppy that will stay a puppy". So, we went to looking for a dog that would suit her. She ended up getting a teacup long haired chiuahua. And I tell you, the dog was 9 weeks old when we got it, and I was sittin there with this little rat in my hand thinkin"I am fixin to pay how much for this thing?", but alas, I love my little girl. Bad thing is that we didnt think the thing would last the first year. My other little girl was almost 3, and she kept dropping the thing. We'd hear the pup drop and scream and think"oh no! the dog's gona die!" It is a survivor though. Think's it's a bulldog too! It likes to play flirtpole. HA HA
I am sorry to get off topic, please forgive me, you know how I am!

FIRST OFF, MY BREEDING FORMULA IS WHAT I CALL K.F.C. STYLE. THEY DO CHICKEN RIGHT. ONE THING RIGHT, AND STICK WITH IT.YOU DON'T GO TO K.F.C. FOR A BURGER. MY FRIEND HAD AN 18LB BLACK PITBULL. IT WAS STRONG AS AN OX. SO THEY HAVE SMALL PITS. I WOULDN'T DOWNGRADE MY BLOODLINE FOR ANYTHING. I HAVE YEARS INVESTED IN THEM. SO MAYBE LETTING YOUR MALE PUT SOMETHING IN THE CUR TO HELP THE CUR'S BLOOD, IS THE WORSE CASE SCENARIO. ( I WOULDN'T ). MY REPUTATION FOR QAULITY DOGS WON'T BE JEPORDIZED BY THAT MOVE.
TO THE GUY WITH THE WHITE RESCUED DOG. YOU REALLY HAVE TO KNOW THE BREEDER TO BE SURE WHAT THE DOG IS. PICTURES WON'T TELL YOU IF IT IS A PITBULL, BUT I GUESS THEY CAN TELL YOU IF ITS AN AMSTAFF.

IN MY OPINION THE DIFFERENCE IN APBT AND AMSTAFF IS THIS.
PITBULLS ARE BRED TO BE GAME. AMSTAFFS ARE BRED TO LOOK LIKE PITBULLS "SHOULD". i:e "ARE SUPPOSED", TO LOOK.
WHEN PEOPLE BREED FOR SIZE, COLOR, BUILD, CONFORMATION, ANYTHING BUT GAMENESS, I CALL THAT AN AMSTAFF. WHEN PEOPLE BREED FOR GAMENESS I CALL THAT AN A.P.B.T.. THEREFORE WITHOUT KNOWING THE HISTORY OF THE BREEDER, ITS HARD TO TELL JUST BY LOOKING AT THE DOG.THIS IS WHERE "PAPERS" COME IN. I AM A REGISTERED A.D.B.A. KENNEL OWNER WHOSE DOG HAS PRODUCED AN A.D.B.A. CHAMPION, AS WELL AS HAVING BEEN RECONIZED BY THE A.D.B.A. FOR PRODUCING QUALITY DOGS. ( NOT SURE WHAT A.D.B.A. CHAMPIONSHIP CRITERIA IS, BUT MY DOGS OFFSPRING WON.) I HAD A DOG STOLEN FROM ME AND THE A.D.B.A. ALLOWED IT TO BE REGISTERED. I HAVEN'T REGISTERED A DOG WITH THEM SINCE. ONE PERSON MADE A COMMENT ABOUT PEOPLE BREEDING WITH NO PAPERS BEING BAD. MY DOGS WILL STACK UP WITH ANY DOG IN ANY CATEGORY. NOT SAYING THEY WILL WIN, BUT THEY WILL REPRESENT COMPETIVELY. ( I THINK THEY WILL WIN) THEY GOT A SAYING " I'D RATHER HAVE AN INCH OF DOG THAN A MILE OF PEDIGREE". PAPERS DON'T MAKE THE DOG. EVERYONE WHO HAS ONE OF MY DOGS CAN TELL YOU THAT. EVEN OWNERS WITH MULTIPLE "PAPER" DOGS RECONISE THE QUALITY OF MY DOGS. MY DOGS HAVE A GOOD PEDIGREE, BUT THEY ARE BETTER THAN THIER PAPERWORK SUGGEST. NO NAME DOGS FROM A SOLID BREEDING PROGRAM, FROM A NATIONALLY UNKNOWN UNDERGROUND BREEDER.
THE A.K.C. AND U.K.C. ARE EVEN LESS VALID IN MY EYES THAN THE A.D.B.A.. (PERSONALLY, I FEEL THE A.D.B.A. IS THE "ORIGINAL" PITBULL REGISTRY)
A.K.C. REGISTERS AMSTAFF'S, AND THE U.K.C. REGISTERS PITBULLS. THEY ARE BASICALLY THE SAME ENTITY WITH TWO PARTS. THEIR DIFFERENCE BETWWEN THE TWO BREEDS: U.K.C. PITBULLS HAVE RED NOSES. DOES THAT MAKE SENSE? A.K.C. AMSTAFFS DON'T HAVE RED NOSES. DOES THIS MAKE SENSE TO ANYONE? I HAD A LITTER. 6 PUPS. 5 BUCKSIN WITH BLACK NOSE AND MASK ( LIKE THE DAM, WHO IS THE SIRE'S DAUGHTER ) AND 1 RED REDNOSE. ( LIKE THE SIRE) 5 ARE A.K.C. AMSTAFF'S , 1 IS A U.K.C. PITBULL. DOES THIS MAKE SENSE? THEY ARE THE SAME DOGS GENITICALLY. THE DAM'S MOTHER IS A.D.B.A. REGISTERED. THE DAM'S FATHER IS A.D.B.A. REGISTERED TOO, BUT I DON'T HAVE THE PAPERS. ( THE BREEDER AND HIS WIFE WERE PARTNER'S AND THEY DIVORCED. SHE'S NOT SIGNING OUT OF SPITE.) DOES THAT MAKE MY MALE LESS GAME/PITBULL? DOES THAT MAKE HIS OFFSPRING WORTHLESS? CURS? NOT TO ME OR ANYONE WHO HAS INTREST IN THE DOGS THAT IS NOT FINACIAL. ITS NOT HARD TO SUBMIT A PHONY LITTER REGISTRATION AND GET PHONY PAPERS FOR THE DOGS. PHONY PAPERS WON'T MAKE A CUR DOG ,GAME, ANYMORE THAN NO PAPERS WILL MAKE A GAME DOG, CUR. BUT TO SOME IT WILL MAKE THE DOG A PITBULL OR AMSTAFF. KNOWING YOUR BREEDER IS BETTER THAN KNOWING YOUR PEDIGREE, OUTSIDE OF FINACIAL TRANSACTIONS. (PUP SELLING)
ED FARON FROM "WILSIDE KENNELS" FARMED A GOOD, GAME BITCH TO MY FRIEND. (POISON IVY WAS HER NAME) NO PAPERS. WE BRED HER TO CH. THUNDER, WHO IS A SPORTING DOG JOURNAL CHAMPION, NOT AN A.D.B.A. CHAMPION. THINK WE DIDN'T KEEP THE OFFSPRING WITH NO PAPERS? OF COURSE WE DID. CH. THUNDER IS ALSO THE FATHER OF THE A.D.B.A. CHAMPION'S MOTHER THAT I SPOKE ABOUT EARLIER. PAPERS CAN BE FAKED A WHOLE LOT EASIER THAN GAMENESS. AND FOR THE RECORD, MY PUPS ARE CALLED " PET BULLS",.AND MY BLOODLINE IS CALLED "BYB". JUST TO AVOID CONFRONTATION WITH KNOW IT ALLS. IF SOMEONE WANTS TO KNOW THE TRUE BREEDING, I TELL THEM , AS WELL AS TEACH THEM HOW I AM PRESERVING THE BLOODLINE. I FOLLOW THE FORMULA THAT PRODUCED MY DOG AND TRY TO RECREATE THAT BREEDING OR IMPROVE ON IT.
    HOPE THIS HELPS.

I just don't see what it is that our breed could stand to gain from other breeds. The only flaw with our dogs is a fair chunk of the owners and breeders, but that wouldn't be improved by making him a mutt. :)

Well just a funny thing to add. The VERY best hog hunting dogs I've ever seen were super heavy Bristol's Thor blood bred to Blue Tick hound. One word ferocious. I own 4 of them. Never sold, just worked in the swamp.

I guess you could call me a hyprocrite. I figure a lot of people know anyway, and there is no denying it. I'm not one to hide from my actions. I voted No, because the reasons why I did breed are as many would say horrible reasons to breed, and yes, I am a one time ByB...However, I breed Tess to Notch because it was an agree between my boyfriend and I...He wanted to eventually breed Notch. So, I said, we can breed them one time only if we don't just sell (in actually we didn't sell them at all. They went to our friends for free) the pups to just anyone. if we don't misrepresent them, meaning try to fool people into thinking they are one certain breed. I also made sure he lined up at least five houses, because we thought she'd have about five pups. In exchange, he promised that we could get Tess fixed after this one time only breeding, and we wouldn't breed Notch ever again...So, it was a compromise, and I understand that a lot of people wouldn't agree with what we did. But 1)we aren't trying to make money off of them and haven't, 2) we have two beautiful dogs with amazing temperaments, which I know many people don't think is a good enough reason, and 3)we didn't just peddle them off to anyone, and 4) we are proving the shoots for the pups and have made the ones that have taken a pup fill out a questionaire and contract, saying that if for whatever reason the pup doesn't "work out" that they will bring the pup/dog (no matter what age) back to us and not bring it to the shelter (though like I said, they are all people we are close friends with, so I doubt that would be a problem anyway)...Originally we had thought about keeping all of them, but she had nine, so some of our friends got them, but we are keeping about five...So, yes, I know many of you feel what I did was wrong, and in many ways, you are probably right...But what's done is done, and won't be done again...So take it as it is. I'll understand if some of you don't want me on here anymore, but I hope that you'll continue to let me learn from you.
