OK as if I can afford this but thank God I work for a Vet. I found out yesterday that my pit X tore her ACL. SHe will be having Surgery to fix it tomorrow. The main thing is kepping her still after for 30 days. She is not even 2 yet.

She went outside one night fine then came in 30 mins later limping.

Well I had to vent. I can not be to mad it is only costing me $600 instead of $1500 to repair. BUt still $600 damn! :(

And anyone else ever went through this? Whats funny is that I assist in these surgeries and a I educate owners on after care for these types surgeries but it is SO different when you go through it. LOL

I got her when she came into the Vet Hospital at 9 wks with parvo. I was the SUCKER that took her home. When the owners did not want to treat.

Damn that sucks, best of wishes to your pooch and your wallet. I know what you mean about keeping your dog in-active, easier said than done. Good luck and I really hope all is well.

    hey cynthia,
i've been through it, a couple of times actually. my idgie had both back knees torn, a couple of years apart. the $$ sux big-time, and i didn't get that vet tech discount! but there wasn't much of a choice, i love my girl.

the after-care wasn't really that big of a deal, although the first few days were pretty painful for her and i had to carry her in and out to potty. but keeping her still wasn't a problem - she hopped on 3 legs after a few days, and only gradually starting using the leg over the next few months. the recovery period is loooong but she runs and plays now just fine. pm me if you want to hear more details...

i'm so sorry you both are going through this.

sorry to be reading about this Cynthia. thank God for employee discounts, huh?
and it is SO different when it's your own, no doubt....
i wish you both the best~patience for you ;) ~during her recoup, and good health for your girl.
hang tight and play a lottery ticket!!!:) .... you gunna assist with her surgery? i kinda enjoy working on my own animals...

  9. It's good to be educated about after care, but I'd rather know about prevention! A proper warm-up, etc. before workout I understand, but what else can prevent these types of injuries?

umm, we're not talking about muscles, but ligaments. a dog can run across the yard, step in a hole or simply turn quickly and tear the cruciate ligament. it doesn't necessarily occur during a "workout." warmups are always good, but from what i understand there's no real prevention.

yup, almost any kind of 'force' that is exerted to that area can cause the tear. freak of nature accident or due to a "work out"..... just "happens"...

You asked for suggestions about keeping the pooch still? Get a crate just large enough for the dog to lay down in. That has always been the best solution for us. Good luck

  13. thanks...I understand that it happens. Humans can work on flexibility to prevent ligament damage although it can not be totally avoided. I don't assume that we can do the same for dogs, but I am newish to dogs. That's the reason I was asking about prevention.

    Thanks ya'll

I dont mind working on my own animals. I just worry a little bit more. But I hate ACL repairs. Ortho surgeries I just hate. I do not know why. Just do.

And yes ACLs can tear for no rhyme or reason. Like I said I put her out on her runner and when I let her in she was limping. And I just knew it was her ACL. I was like DAMN!!!!!

She is a hyper girl ADHD I swear. With any of my other dogs I would not worry but she is my little speacial bus girl. :p I have a crate (mine are indoor dogs). She is the type that will all of a sudden get a burst of energy and try and take off.

I am keeping her at the clinic prob till MON to be safe. I know I will be able to handle it. She just will be unhappy for a little while. Really unhappy.
