So does any body know If this dog food is any good. I was thinking about starting to feed my dog this because a breeder that I talked to at a pet store says he feeds this to all of his pets and they are healthy and strong.

It's alright. I feed my dogs and pups Nutro Max. They have done good on it so far. I have been using it for about a year and a half now.

It is a mediocre feed at best. The main reason people use and feed Diamond is because of the price, and not the quality of the feed. Very few individuals in these dogs feed what is best for their dogs, instead only feed what is best for their pockets.

Thats not why I feed them that. I just got it because other breeders say it's good so I wanted to try it out. So what are some other good ones that you all use?

Have you looked into Canidae. I think if I were to actually feed dry dog food I would go with that food. Not diamond. My dad feeds all his american bulldogs diamond and MAN they SHIT EVERYWHERE!!! LOL

diamind is damn good food dont be fooled by the naysayers i have fed diamond for a while i recently switched over to Black gold only because of the ingrediants being the near same and price a little better and have been seeing good results low amounts of feces hard and compact and dark exactly what you are looking for yes if i had 1 or 2 dogs i would feed canidae but with a large yard it is not practical and i buy food a ton at a time

  9. I'm not impressed with Diamond. My dog's coat doesn't look good and he got a rash/allergy from eating it.

  17. The rash may not be caused from the food. The dog could have some type of external parasite such as mites or depending on where you are at maybe fleas, or just an allergy or dry skin. Diamond in my oppinion is a 7 1/2 on a scale of 10. Black gold is an excellent choice in the 9 range and another food that is also good although I hear of nobody on here using it is Excalibur. You can look at all the expensive brands and fancy names but it all boils down to this....the ingredients

if your dog food's first ingredient isnt chicken, turkey or poultry. it is harder on the digestive tract thus causing large amounts of dung. Most manufacturers use cereal fillers and meals that have more than normal fiber. fiber is a nice word for indigestible material, makes em feel full, they get hungrier more often they have to eat more to get full, then they dump alot and man raking up dung is not one of my favorite past times, but I do it for the health of my babies. Also someone mentioned consistency of the dung, it should be a medium to dark brown not black and it should be solid, stable. if it is not then they could have coccidosis or someother tract infection, when in doubt give em three days of penicillan or broad spectrum antibiotic that should kill about any infection. make sure you worm regularly. I use ivermectin once a month even in winter. if your dog has coccidosis, right now is the good time to pump em full of antibiotics for the occusts cannot live long on the ground in cold weather and the midwest and south is supposed to be having some sub zero temps in a couple of days. the reason I say this as the occusts will be coming out of the dogs when antibiotics are given in the correct dosage and times and you need the frigid weather to be on your side or you will disinfecting your entire yard, which from what I understand is very costly and a pain yet somewhat impossible depending on the type of surface that your yard has.

back to the ingredients the next time you are where they sell a few brands and have a few minutes to spare turn over a bag of purina one, dog chow, gravy train, old roy, eukanuba and the list goes on. most will start out with corn meal, bone meal, lamb, rice, or the like. while lamb is nice, it isn't as nice to our dogs as it is us. Even beef is hard on the digestive tract.

  18. one more thing, for good dental health, give your dog a BIG chew bone. it helps keep the tarter down and you can independently add some omega 3 & 6, that is the magic ingredient to a healthy and shiney coat. I inspect my dogs canines once a month and if there is any sign of buildup, i first give a big bone if that doesn't work i get out the pick and pick it off before it is a problem. my dog's teeth are whiter than most peoples teeth. Also kv vet supply sells supplements for your dogs shedding and health. that would definitely help. if you don't have the money for those expensive things then keep the bacon grease and put a TBS on your dogs food once daily. an egg every now and then won't hurt either. watch real bones and they may splinter and if they don't puncture the stomach, they could the intestinal tracts, thus your dog will die and you won't even know what hit ya.

speaking of real bones, we had two fun cases today. One was a pit bull with a deer bone lodged in it's mouth. Some "happy drugs" for the dog & a set of plyers for me was all the fun I needed on that one. Dog is okay. But the 2nd dog was not so lucky. An english bulldog was fed some bones & although he was able to crunch 'em up okay, the crunchy pieces caused a blockage in his intestines he could not pass. He ruptured his small intestine & will be lucky to survive this. So Beware!

  20. rocksteady

    rocksteady I'll drink to that..

I've been feeding diamond Lamb and Rice for over 5 years now.. and have tried all that expensive stuff. I keep going back to the lamb and rice.

I do know though that alot of people dont like how the dogs coats turn out by some of the diamond But I have yet to have a problem with the quality of my dogs coats with the lamb and rice

Diamond also puts out the Chicken Soup series. I used the puppy food on my last litter. Expensive ..but then at 4 months I had pups placing in shows ... usually I use the purina Pro plan puppy food or the Diamond Large Breed puppy feed (its lamb and rice)

I still cant figure out hteoug how they determine that a feed is suitable for all life stages. A growing pups needs different nutrition than and adult dog .Oh well!! I used Canidae and honestly I couldnt tell the difference in my dogs after 6 months I could however tell a difference when I use nutro (my dogs didnt do well..they shedded alot of Nutro) and when I switched to the green bad of Diamond..

Just find something that works and stick with it. Its not good to be switching feeds all the time! If your dog is doing good, as my vet says, theres no reason to keep changing. the biggest thing to watch out for is protien. Too high of protien can cause health problems Also try to stay away from by products, high amounts of corn..
