I used to like them, and bought one for my Dogo. But after having my legs skewered enough, we retired ol' spike. (The collar, not the dog.) I just don't see the point of them anymore, especially how extreme some people get with them. 4" wide with 2" spikes is going to inspire nothing but avoidance. The only ones who will be attracted to the dog are those who are attracted to other fashion accessories for the same stupid reasons.

What bothers me worse is having people wear them...

But eh, to each their own. I'm not a fan of them.

My german shepherd bitch I had growing up, Jessie, wore a spike collar for a few years. She was a St. John Ambulance certified therapy dog (she wore her red collar and leash for that though), went everywhere with me, was a demo dog for the local dog training club, and my constant companion. Myself, I like spikes. She wore that collar because I liked it (I am not going to lie :P ) and because of the reverse psychology thing. I figured that people would realize that this freindly, wonderful dog is nothing to be afraid of. My other thought was that kids don't give a s@#$ about what collar the dog is wearing. I used to take her to parks all the time because kids and babies were her favourite. The kids would run up, the parents (who were never doing a good supervising job) would freak when they saw their children petting the big black police dog with the spiked collar, and by the time they got to me their kids were being licked in the face by a seemingly happy and harmless dog that clearly likes kids. This would lead into a discussion of GSDs and how they are not vicious, stereotypes and such, the people would see I know what I am talking about and I would start talking about pit bulls. I waited 10 years between when I decided I wanted a APBT and when I got one, and for that time I had my shepherds and talked people ears off about german shepherds and pit bulls and their sterotypes. I changed a lot of peoples minds about APBTs without even owning one :)
Now that being said, I no longer own Jessie or Xander (my other GSD), and now own my little APBT Sweetie. She does not wear a spiked collar anywhere other than in my house or the two times I have walked her somewhere sketchy in the middle of the night. People see a stocky dog wearing a spiked collar, immediately figure it is a pit bull and freak out. I do not want this, nor does the American pit bull terrier need this. Their public image is damaged enough without people parading their dogs around with spiked collars and chain leashes. And pretty much anyone who is going to walk their pit bull with a spiked collar is doing it for the wrong reasons, and the vast majority of people that see that dog walking around are going to go home with just one more reason to stick it in their memory to fear these dogs. Like I said, our breed does not need this.
Sweetie, she wears a black nylon collar. I usually put a bandana on her if we are going out where there are lots of people. And in the winter she wears her coat, so she doesn't seem so scary. Most people think she is a boxer or lab cross because she is so small (which amazes me because she is much smaller than a boxer or a lab) and this gives me a chance to talk some sense into people about this breed.

Damm, now thats what i call a dog collar lol (the all the way at the bottom), pitbulls would get hurt with a collar like that, being how active they are. I believe its personal preference, i myself dont like them, unless it serves a purpose, like sheppards or farm dogs protecting live stock , I have 1 neo mastiff , pitbull and a puppy and if anyone of them had one of those spiked collars, it would be a bloody mess after they play around.

I use to have a spiked, dull studded collar for my male. He didn't wear it very much at all, but it did come in handy around here. I hardly ever walk around the neighborhood, but there are a alot of stray dogs around, and its usually in a pack. I use to let another male I have wear it sometimes. That spike collar will keep another animal off of the neck area for sure and it give your dog an advantage when things like that happen.

As far as the look goes, I think it's getting a little played out. If your dog's your fashion statement, at least come up with something original.

Right now I'm working on getting one of those collars with a handle from Stillwater. Looks like a great training tool.

edit: I do however, like spiked leather harnesses. That's like gettin ready for war! Major body protection.

I'd have to agree with everyone else on this one. If it serves a working purpose I don't mind it, but if your just putting that collar on your dog for looks, I think it looks ridiculous. Now as far as people wearing them... that's beyond ridiculous and I won't even get started on that topic!

U know if u think about it, if u put some heavy duty spikes on a cut collar for a hog dog i think it would be a great way to save a few dogs, but i guess u really don't need them cause a regular cut collar should work just as good

Re: "Spikey Collars" yay or nay?????

I personally think they are fine, but I don't think they send a good image. True spiked collars were designed for many working dogs to ensure that they could get their jobs done without interference from wolves or other dogs (like herding dogs, or gaurd dogs), so the "modern" version is symbolic to me. But I do think it sends a bad image to ignorant people, and ignorant owners who think their dogs are bada$$ because they are wearing spiked leather. I see a lot of chihuahuas with these collars and people think it's funny... but it's not funny on a working dog apparently. Hell, I know a guy who makes his cat wear one, and I feel bad because it's heavy for the cat, but he's always been a moron.

    LOL!!!!
this is EXACTLY the "look" of the collar that we were discussing!!!!
sorry imo, it's nothing more than a detriment to the breed.

    ....too funny!
