Not trying to be smart, but I would just fill it and put the dog in to swim. It's not like you are going to leave him unattended I hope. Oh, and make sure the dog likes to swim. :) LOL

I guess you must be talking about a harness rigged from above to keep the dog from going under. I'm sure you would use chemicals just like a pool. Sorry I don't know a lot about it, but that's what I think.

yea the harness deal thats what i was talking about, the chemicals i was also wondering about because this wouldnt have the filters and pumps that pools have and i can see this thing in the summer getting pretty nasty lol but im not for sure i was hoping someone here had a swim tank and could let me know what they do but we will have to wait and see lol thanks for your advice maybe we can get some more ideas about it and learn at the same time lol .

I let the dogs naturally swim, its a FANTASTIC work out, and less stressful then running on a hard surface. A swim tank is just a large tank of water, some use horse troughs, a carnival dunk tank should work, but what I'm picturing when I think "dunk tank" is way too tall, maybe 3' tall tops is ideal. Simply two boards running across the tank perpindicular, and a harness attached to them so the dog swims, instead of sinking to the bottom and standing ;)

yea this thing was pretty tall but it is right about 3 foot maybe a touch more but not by much the idea of the wood woudl probably do the trick too, i was thinking of a different way (trying to make it harder than it should be probably lol) but i think that should work i wonder now what kind of harness would be best hopefully i wont need it but im sure i will have a couple of dogs that just try to get out if this is the case though i guess i will have to find another way of conditioning those particular dogs right. ive just been thinking about a tank for awhile since i have it available, if i could keep it clean it woudl probably do pretty good the way you were talking about. i just hope it doesnt turn into a breeding ground for mosquitos lol.

Like i said before, you will have to treat it with chemicals. you can pick up what you need at walmart.

Ugh, mosquitoes are the worst! Good luck with the swim tank; it's great exersize for the buddies.

Lucky for me I live about a 1/4 mile from the lake! You better believe I'm gonna be spending all my free time there come this summer. Yipee! I needs me a water dog!

I dont know if I would recommend cleaning it with chemicals, may be too harsh on a dogs skin. Put a tarp over it when not in use, clean the bugs out just like a pool, and refill the water once a week or something. A harness is almost a must 100% of the time, the dog is not going to think to swim when placed in the water, its a bathtub to them. They will need the harness to differentiate between the two, and tread water.

Swim tanks have treadmills built in to them and that's why they need to be harnessed. I don't see how a dunk tank would work with any type of harness.

Thats a high class dunk tank maximus. If the dog will swim by itself, its not really worth it to go to the effort involved to make that work.

Well the only way you can can a dog to swim in a still position would be to have a rig that lowers the dog into the tank by a harness and suspends them high enough to where the dog can paddle without touching the bottom and that seems pretty high class to me.
