A fella i knew had some real good black terriers ... you could see they had taken a lot of punishment ... he always said pit bulls couldnt take the punishment they had ( for there size ) and that Alot of pit bulls wern’t as game ! He had also ran with a famous kennel over here so he was no fool !

I suppose buying a good working lurcher or terrier is same as buying a good working bulldog? A lot depends who bred them and why?

  5. Game isn't how hard an animal is in the first 5 or 10 mins or 30 mins for that matter game is the ability to think your winning when your really getting whipped to stay on in there untill the end death or to be broke apart there are some really game little terriers but they are far and few between as a real terrierman has no real need for these if he's in it for the true purpose of pest control that is he needs a terrier that's ready to go to work instead of healing in the kennel as for a kerry blue I doubt there is a real dead game kerry blue alive today or ever just my opinion someone can prove me wrong

  7. This has got intresting aint it?
    haha..not bad,not bad.im suprised lol.

some nice posts from every one really.

I suppose all working breeds are "game"in there own sort way..i cant not admire the dog in its working role.from the humble Collie to Huskies,Hounds and Greyhounds.you know folks they are all game in there own feild.
the Collie will work with iceculs hanging of it.it will find and round them sheep for its master whos just as tough as his dog going out on to that hill.
the Huskies will work and pull that load through such horrific weather it seems unreal.again along with there tough masters.
the Hound will follow that trail untill it litery drops down dead.from the smaller Beagels to the fantastic Hounds you guys in the States have.
the Greyhound will die chaseing its Hare,it will run its self to exustion.
The same can be said about many other working breeds.ie the Retriver who retived a million shot geese from freezing water untill it collapesd..the man dog what took a machete chop for you,ex,ex..
So all dogs will show "gameness"in there own feild.

So you get what im saying right?you get were im heading here?

    Now on to the terrier.....
NEXT to the Bulldog its probs the gamest..ive seen some funny little terriers over the years that were fucking loons and made me laugh.
two come straight to mind from a few years back. one of em grabed a cow by the face and hung on like a Bulldog lol.its partner in crime never fancied catching them, but chased and bayed and fought with the cows like a hound fighting a wild boar lol...they was not my dogs lol.but i stood there in the middle of it all rather terrified at the stampied they had created lol..
in Wales and North England..and Scotland.there is most defintly super hard terriers.there owners will call em game, you will here em say that..
personly i call em Hard my self.even super hard.
some one,i think it was Lrs but not sure?,further back, says hunting or hunting pests is not sport.
And i can only agree with that.theres a sporting side to hunting to some degree, the nature of the qurry, the cunning of it and stuff like that.but sport it is not.
you hunt for meat..you farm your own meat and you hunt to protect that meat.
so how in the right mind is that sport?
now in the areas i just metiond..in them areas the fox is a pest.in them areas the fox is hunted to protect lambs.so the terriers are bred hard to kill there fox.dont doubt this here folks.terriers in them places are as hard as iron.
they kill there foxes.and not many people in these gaffs want bolting types.they need hard types..they dont need the fox bolting and the hounds on another mad chase all around a mouintan.once that fox is to ground the want it accounted for..
and just coz these terriers are hard dont mean they get knocked up to much watsoever.they good at what they do...
these hard terriers should not be put near a Badger imo.they get mutilated..i cant say its the same as gameness in Bulldogs though.more like it goes straight it there, gets mulled so fast theres nothing it can do really..most hard dogs what do mange to survive are most reluctet to face brock again thats for sure.ive seen top notch fox despatchers that will not even go down a hole if theres a brock down there because of a previous pasting it had taken from them.
So no..LOL.i would not say they are as game as a Bulldog..some of them are very currish lol.some are amuzingly insane wicked little loons..

I dont think no breed shows its Gameness they way Bulldogs do.

    All the best folks.

  8. I forgot to metion, the terriers i said that done that to the cows..they were both gyps.the one what bayed and niped and chased the cows was a white long loose coated tan marked gyp that would pass as a Russle.the other(the one what hung on) a jet black smooth coated bull headed gyp that you would call Paterdale..but yet they were both sisters out the same litter.
they both went to ground by accident one day..the man who owend them should of known better.he was about sixty years old and a total loon.he had no controle over these two watsoever, and had let them loose on a riverbank one day, they chased a mink(what was in a tree)never caught it but this led into the man and his to dogs becomeing "mink hunters"..so every time he walked his dogs on a stroll down the river bank he was hunting mink lol.i dont think they caught one.they were probs chaseing Sqirrels just as much as minks lol.
but i warned him one day that not to far from his beloved river bank were hed taken 40 000 mink in a year lol.that there was some huge Badger sets.but you cant tell some one like this, because, as he said "ive hunted this area me hole life boy,and Badgers aint lived in them setts for twenty years"....
i new he was wrong..ide seen the shit holes not to far from em.the foot prints.how fresh and how big the kick out on some holes were..,,i tryed explaining all this but ofcourse i was wrong.

Hes still got the white one now.but the black ones gone.
yup, they ran of from the river bank, desterbed a fox on one of there mink hunts lol.the fox legged it right to them setts..and just as it was going dark!
he called em both out after three days in his words, but in reality a hour..the white one had a few bites what looked to me like dog bites.the black one had dog bites all over its back end and bad nasty Badger bites on its frount end..it was very clear what had happend.
i told the old man he needs to get his black one indoors.but he told me it will be ok...
it died a few days later of sepsiss or god noes what.

    Just thought ide relate that.
    i dont no why lol.

    All the best.

My take is that gameness is a sporting trait of bulldogs if it’s not game then it can’t reliably do its job. But many terriers won’t even take a 20 minute beating and yet if I get more foxes done in a season it’s a better dog than a game terrier that dies down with brock etc. Now if your digging for sport(why?!? It’s boring lol) then I can see owning a harder terrier but you won’t have him out more than half a dozen times and the farmer won’t be happy with me lol.

Just seen this oldguy but this all over. my own terriers are not straight digging dogs so not much use for a digging man but my cousins bred and bought there stock for that job. Same breeding in both terriers nearly but act different.

Questions for Lrs, Soze or anyone else with knowledge on evolution of working breeds? 1/ What terriers got crossed with Bulldogs to create the modern Gamedog and were those terriers 'ever' considered game in their own right? 2/ Did BN ever cross working Staff into his line of black and chocolate Patterdale type dogs during the 1970's? 3/ Is there a breed of terrier today that's still valued for it's gameness, or has that ship sailed similar to the show staff?

I knew someone who once owned and bred a chocolate coloured Patterdale type dog that he called 'Ned', always said he was as game as any bulldog and he owned plenty. The people I knew who kept black Patterdale type dogs, mostly got them by accident since their main interest was bulldogs, I can recall the only reason they fed them black terriers was on account of their skill at catching yard rats and because their gameness got tested and their space on the yard was earned same as a bulldog.. Interesting hearing the different views fellas.. Thanks.

This is where it gets interesting for me mate I believe the terriers that got crossed into the bulldogs came from the rat pits but if you look at the winning terriers in the pits they always had a drop of bull in them. Either a quarter or an eight etc. But again these were sporting terriers not digging/field dogs. And even the hard pats trace back to outcosses to staffs. Even if they won’t admit it it’s there for everyone to see. I don’t dig anymore mate but spend most weekends ratting trust me it’s not much of a test just more fun. I’d cull any terrier that jacked on a rat. Any dog can kill the odd rat.

That's interesting mate, I should have paid more attention to that stuff in the beginning, just never interested until recently.. I never thought killing rats was a test of gameness, the ones up here tested into harder completion.

I always felt like the Terriers that were crossed in was more than likely a regional thing.I don't think is was any specific Terrier ...jmo

  15. Lrs

    Lrs Big Dog

And this is how terriers differed in reality. It was when the kc craze first started loads of people tried to cash in by coming up with all sorts of names and slight differences in looks for basically what people saw as two types of terrier. above ground/general purpose farm terrier and underground/digging terrier so roughly two types of terrier for every major region of the uk. Look at the Irish terriers there all pretty much the same dog before showing became a thing. Maybe two types one tall one shorter. And now almost nobody works there terriers in any way. The numbers are even worse than bulldogs lmao if you think of how many terriers little old lady’s and first time dog owners first choice.

I think all kind of Terriers were bred in. The question is what's the original cross ? Is the rest just (bad) 'copies' i.e. Bullterrier ?
And - let's see where this goes, lol - is it possible that the Irish Old Family dogs are Terriers, maybe Terrier-mutations ?
    :D
Before you all kill me, just think about it for a minute. At least, almost everything would make sense then.

I would also say the cross was made with rat pit dogs.
Another question could be if the Terrier was crossed into the Bulldogs or if the Bulldog was crossed into the Terrier to get the pit dog.

I think Pit bulls are the bull dog , prints from the time of sporting Bull dogs show dogs that look like pit bulls , and what people call bulldogs now , came about ( same way American Bullys did today ) when shows and pets became a business sporting bull dogs mix with other breeds like pugs ,,, and the white Bull terrier , is a mix of White English Terriers and the sporting bull dog , noting to do with the show sour mug Bulldog
