Newest member to the zoo.

So.... My daughters been bugging me for a ferret for about 5 months now. Since she's a really good kid, jock, honor student in AP classes yada yada yada, I told her if she bought everything it needed I'll buy the Polecat. I can't even knock this kids hustle game. She gave my mother a list of xmas ideas and 3/4 of it was small animal related. Cage, hammock, harness and lead, litter box etc. They spoil her ass rotten so of course they got her everything. She says to me, "you never said how I should get the needed items" and really, I didn't have a come back to it. She straight up hustled me. Lmao kid is sharp as a tac.

So I now have to come through on my word so I took her yesterday and we picked up this 10 week old lil girl out of her litter.

Now we just have to keep Charlie from eating it. Lol

Not a Rodent but a Musteline...

Mustelines diet is Rodent,so any mice exc around the property and you will have cheap norishing food for your Ferret.

Yes sir, these things will smash a rodent. They are vicious as hell on prey. We plan on feeding her a prey model diet when she is a few months older. I used to throw one I had in my 20s feeder mice. It was usually a pretty violent scene.

 

Not yet. Charlie is the only dog here that is indoors. He don't really seem to care about her very much at all. Be different if she was running loose I'm sure. He'll walk over to her cage, they'll sniff each other then Charlie walks away. Anytime she is free, he is in his crate. When he is free, she is in her cage in my kids room and my daughter always keeps her door closed. She is actually mildly allergic to the dogs, so am I. Their skin oil makes us break out in hives. It only bothers me if they aren't bathed at least once a month but with my daughter it's pretty much anytime. Charlie is her dog and always wants to be in her room. She don't want him in there when she isn't here or he will sleep her bed causing a skin reaction next time she's in the bed so she is really good at keeping her door closed because of it.

No mice here, I had one get in my house a few months ago when the weather was changing that got merked in a trap. I wouldn't feed her anything wild though because of the chance of parasites or poisons. We'll buy her feeder mice that are captive raised though so we know they are safe for her to eat.

ive always toyed with the idea of owning a Mink.

Then again,with that said,a wild one...or worse still,a loose one, will cause carnege if youve got chickens or pheasents or ducks,lol or any bird for that matter.
(A great way of anoying someone you dont like-if they keep birds that is.)

Its also worth a mention that most of these creatures(Mustelines)
can quite easy be demestocated.or inprinted if you like.
Mink and Ferrets would be evidence of this..and Badgers to.
And im sure many folks in the states have had Wolverines to as pets.(nuts lol)
Raccons are a popular pet...and i read a story about a rent collector in Africa who tamed a Honey Badger(tho im not sure how true that is lol.)went round with it on a lead collecting rent.
dont get me wrong..i could see the larger ones being a bit of a hanful lol.but it shows they got lnteigence to some degree.

we use Ferrets to bolt Rabbits..i dont keep em,because theres not as many Rabbits by my house as there used to be..but i no people who keep em,they travel as far as the Yorkshire moors to hunt Rabbits with Ferrets.
But even when there was Rabbits around here there borrows were hard to Ferret.not that im a expert..but the borrows were under to much thick cover.with the odd hole on the sides of fields by Badger setts.so to Ferret it was hard,because it was hard to net..but you still could bolt a Rabbit out of there if you had dogs surounding the cover.
i remeber once( and i blame the lad because he fed his Ferrets shit.and if he would of fed the Ferrets a nauterl diet they would of killed and come out.not eat and slept)the Ferret killed a Rabbit and lied up,and it was a fucking task to get it back.under all that cover arrrr!it was murder..i resorted to useing Snares on the runs in stead next time i went for Rabbits lol.
but were theres big warrens on feilds or hilly ground Ferrets are essential to get the Rabbits out of them, and in that case are far more effective then any Snare.

Ferrets are bad little animals. Had one about 15 years ago. I gave it to a friend. He tried to put it in the same pin as his guinea pig. The guinea pig kept messing with the ferret. The ferret messed up the guinea pig within seconds. Had to separate.

 

Lol it's an all around bad idea to put one with any rodent. It's a predator x prey relationship.

Hard to believe something so cute smells so bad... Lol.

 

Tink is now a little over 4 months old and considered full grown. She's so porky from the dainty little thing she was when we first brought her home. Eats constantly. I like her more than Charlie most days and she's pretty entertaining and very mischievous amd always on the go. Straight up stalks and attacks my feet when I walk, follows me around. I let her free roam the house most everyday. We're going to get her first live prey for her in a few more weeks. See if there is any interest.

 

You're right about the musky smell AGK but still need little animals.
