I keep Bulldogs, not Hounds

The recent phenomenon of people using the term 'Hound' when referring to Bulldogs really gets up my nose.

To me a hound is a big slobbering tracking dog without an ounce of gameness in its bones. I never heard dog men describe a Bulldog as a hound until a few years ago, and much to my disgust it has caught on.

You will never hear a Redtick owner call his dogs Bulldogs, so why do some fanciers refer to their Bulldogs as Hounds?

Hounds are Hounds and Bulldogs are Bulldogs!

 

I believe the apbt had some hound dog added somewhere. Folks bred what worked and gave a fuck about “purity” until about the last 100yrs or so. I’d bet there have been plenty of dogmen that added other breeds to their stock if it made them better. “Accidental breedings” happen all the time... Hound dogs are MUCH more resilient than you are giving them credit for... many hounds have taken their deaths on the hunt

 

Redboy dogs? Big, red, big floppy ears, loud yodeling bark, known for not being so smart... I’ll admit redboy dogs are smaller now but look at their weights yrs ago. Hell Redboy himself was 50+ pit weight, that’s about 60+- on the chain. He could have easily been part coonhound imo

 

In that case it's a poorly thought out strategy, because there are going to be a lot more questions about just what type of 'Hounds' you are keeping than if you had just called them 'Dogs'.

 

The only thing Red Boy dogs chase up trees is the Grim Reaper!

When they were baiting dogs,when they were kept by royalty,,they were classed as hounds.poor people,were not aloud to keep hounds.any hound.greyhounds, sent hounds,catch hounds.diddent matter..the poor were however aloud to keep terriers....I'm a believer that the apbt.has very little terrier in its make-up..and the terrier,what people say is in them.may stem from the fact that poor people were not aloud to keep hounds,so they said there dogs were bull cross Terriers??...that way they could not get there dogs confiscated...............

I call them bulldogs unless I'm talking to someone I don't know or believe to be like-minded. Then I'll usually just say they are mixed breeds or I don't know, I got it at the shelter. Lol

 

I'm guilty if that's what you want to call it. But I call mine hounds sometimes. It's just another way of saying dogs to me.like saying mutts even though they aint. And nobody ever thinks I got actual hound dogs when I say it.
To me no big deal.

I keep house anchors.

I like to build houses and without anything in them to weigh them down they may blow off in the wind.

 

Haha when I first heard someone use the word hounds on here, I just took it as a funny, ironic term, like calling a bald guy curly. But then I considered the possibility that some early hounds may be in the pedigrees way back. I'm sure there are some hard-working hounds out there. Somewhat related to this - I watched a documentary about Bob Guccione (Penthouse creator). It was called Filthy Gorgeous. He kept hounds that I assume were Italian bred. Nice looking dogs. I also watched the Hugh Hefner Playboy series on Amazon prime (American Playboy) - very well-made. In one scene it shows actor James Caan with a nice looking bulldog in a scene with Dorothy Stratton at the Playboy Mansion. Watch those two shows if you can. And sorry for the rambling post.

A hound is a hound, a courser is a courser, an eye dog is an eye dog, and a Bulldog is a Bulldog.

I Did research it..Hound is from german hund meaning dog.

If we wanna be accurate bout type of dog then we should say pitdog not bulldog. Yiu know how bull dogging was banned in England then poor folks turned to dog to dog combat and when i read all media printing from 1800s or early 1900s they mostly used pit dog. Pit dog is a dog thats pitted with other animals be it bulls or luons or rat or monkeys or humans .but pit bull dog is less accurate and bit misleading. Pit dog is more open ended if i can or general without specifying which animal its pitted to.
