I have never correlated the slime around a turn as an indication for worms/fleas. It may be. Not sure.

If you add greens to the diet the turd will go from the brown turd color to a slight tint of green. When that turd slimes over I have always considered that the step before the shit turns to brown water.

Same thing with watching the urine when he pisses. It should be clear or close to clear.

This is way old school but it works and for some older folks it takes the place of blood work.

Watch the dog piss. It should be clear or close to clear. Once you have seen two days of clear pissing start supplementing the performance enhancers. Count the number of days until you see the color change. He is now assimilating everything he can and then pissing the rest away.

The object is to find his daily/weekly dose. Once he is assimilating all he can and the piss turns yellow to dark yellow. Whatever the amount of supplements to saturate divide by 7. This becomes the preferred daily dose.

Then one can make slight adjustments upward as the work load increases. Always documenting the amounts and the color of the urine. Any time it darkens lighten up on the amounts, even skipping a day to get him back to assimilating not saturating.

This (and blood work, which is better and more accurate) will debunk the myth of having to come off supplements 10-14 days out.

  2. That's some great reading above.thanks slim12.....I've noticed when the dogs don't get a lot of exercise, there piss is pretty dark.is this because they are wasting a lot of nutrients in there food?(because there not active a lot of the nutrients are getting wasted?)when they get plenty of exercise there piss is pretty clear.is this because they have used a lot of the nutrients in there food?(because they've had exercise and there body craves it?and uses all the nutrients up?)....hope u understand.

    Slim12,
Again I love your scientific approach! I have learned more from you in this post than I have from years at looking at another pitbull site. Your time and knowledge is very much appreciated!

Yes the more the dog works the more he uses so there is less wasted. If a dog gets two scoops of 'go getter' and then lays on the couch he will waste a large percentage of the two scoops. Same scenario and the dog is working hard his body will use more of the two scoops and waste less.

Very few dogs actually need supplementation until the really hard work begins. They are amazing like that.

I'm not sure how scientific it turns out to be in the end. Mostly it is trial and error.

A thousand times I have said to myself, "Really?, Dumbass!

I have read and re-read the billinghurst book, planned out 20 days of meals and can’t wait to put it into action next week! Thanks all for the great info!

There are still a few mom and pop butchers that are around here that love to see me pull up and ask for their trash.
A few times I picked up a load that actually had a unborn calf in the bucket to take home. Sounds bad but to me I hit the jackpot in my mind. They just butcher for meat and the rest is trash that they take out and bury every other day. I love going to feed and everybody is running around like they haven't ate in a week. You can definitely see the energy levels go up. Poop is a thing of the past, you can almost throw the shovel and rake away. The down side is that instead of the butcher having to bury waste every day, I end up with permanent buzzards waiting on feeding time. The truck has to be sprayed out on the regular. But triple, liver, heart, and brains are not a rarity at all.
I got a few that can eat a deer brain before I get done feeding. They play with it the first few times but once they got it it's like learning to ride a bike and they get it they never forget.
In my opinion kibble is by far the easiest way to feed and I have not even came close to coming up with a system to mirror kibble. A deep freezer and an extra refrigerator is the only way to be able to make life easier. Matter fact it is a must. A regular freezer like mine can only fit a case of chicken and that's fine but I got to eat too, so a extra one is a must if feeding more than 1 dog.
Leg quarter, rice, yogurt, eggs, lard and multi vitamins are the easiest if feeding 1 or 2. (California Jack's recipe)

I have had two stints with a 'local type butcher'. I rented from a bitcher once and he brought home a five gallon bucket of any and everything just about every day. The dog got what ever came out of the bucket as I walked by. No rhyme nor reason in what they got. Not the best method but it was easy, it was delivered fresh, I did not have to store/freeze and most importantly, it was free. LOL

The next was a guy I grew up with bought a meat shop and he had me a box two or three times per week. I hated to see him give that business up.

I definitely see where you are coming from.

Been there, done that....and wish I could do it again.

When I switched to raw, I noticed healthier everything, (coat, stools, energy levels) but definitely a decrease in allergies. You still have to watch what you feed with raw, I know some raw fed dogs that still have an intolerance to chicken.
A friend of mine posted a CL message and asked for meat....she got 75 rabbits for a buxk a pc or something ridiculously cheap. She had to slaughter, but for that cheap, who cares.

The question is how much raw food should you feed a dog? I've just got a 4 month old Patterdale, when you have no guidlines what's the best method? Give a weighed amount or just ensure food is in the bowl for the day?

For a pup I don't know but for an adult it's normally something between 2-3% of the body weight.
But if you're dog is working raw food is just a pain in the ass, I had to give 6-7% of the body weight of my dog in raw food, add duck fat to increase the lipid level and it's was still difficult to maintain his weight...

    • Raw Chicken Quarters (8 oz) 1 Cup White Rice (8 oz) Whole Egg (2 oz) Plain Yogurt (1.2 oz) 1 Tsp Lard and 1 multivitamin
I used this for a 45-50 lb dog. For yours I and I say again I would cut everything in half then wait a week to see how he is looking then go from there.

How long was the dog on a solid raw diet prior to being worked?

Around that time he should have acclimated. Sometimes it takes as much as 8-10 weeks.

The increase is he needs more fuel.

The RAW has a lot of water content. So every 6-7% of food is also XX% amount of water content included.

6-7% of the bodyweight is not all that high. Ch. Lil Man was eating 3-4lbs of food per day and he was a low to mid 40's dog.
