Olympic Venue Surrounded by Dog Meat Farms, Dog Soup on Menus Despite Protests

The South Korean government offered restaurants serving dog-meat soup money to take it off the menu during the 2018 Olympic winter games taking place in Pyeongchang but most refused, according to media reports.

AFP News Agency reported last week:

South Koreans are believed to consume about one million dogs a year as a summertime delicacy, with the greasy red meat – which is invariably boiled for tenderness – believed to increase energy.

Activists have stepped up campaigns to ban dog consumption, with online petitions urging boycotts of the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics over the issue, and protests in Seoul.

Local authorities asked the 12 dog meat restaurants in Pyeongchang county to stop serving the food during the games, in exchange for subsidies. But only two have complied, Pyeongchang County government official Lee Yong-bae told AFP.

“We’ve faced a lot of complaints from restaurant operators that we are threatening their livelihood,” the official said.

“Some of them initially shifted to selling pork or things instead of dog meat only to find their sales plunging sharply,” he said. “They then switched back to dog meat.”

The animal activists fighting the Korean dog meat trade include EK Park, who founded Free Korean Dogs.

Right now, Canadian figure skater Meagan Duhamel and partner Eric Radford are in first place in pair skating, and their Canadian skating team is also in first place.

But a year ago, while she and Radford were in South Korea for another competition, Park arranged for Duhamel to adopt Moo-tae, a dachshund mix that was rescued by Buddhist monks as a puppy from a farm in the southern part of the country.

Park, who was born in South Korea but now lives in Toronto, helped rescue 240 dogs last year, a process that includes volunteers who are willing to accompany the dogs on flights to “forever homes” in Canada and the United States.

    The Associated Press reported:

The 2-year-old pup has been living with her and husband/coach Bruno Marcotte in Montreal since, spending his days doing yoga with Duhamel and making friends at the local dog park.

It’s been a different life for Moo-tae. Like roughly 2 million dogs each year, he was supposed to be raised on a Korean dog meat farm, where conditions are often poor. Moo-tae may have been locked in a cage, beaten or left without food or water. Certainly, he would have been sold and slaughtered, then probably served in soup at one of many restaurants still popular among Korea’s elderly population.

“He loved to sit with the Buddhas during meditation and yoga,” Duhamel said. “I thought, ‘Oh my God, maybe this dog has some special spiritual energy.’”

“That was really why I chose him,” Duhamel said.

When we eat give thanks and use every part we can respect for ourselves and what we do is who we become. Torturing an an animal so that your taste buds can dance. God forbid I get hold of a people person that is like that. Be RESPECTABLE in what ever you choose to do Dogman Hunter Farmer. And if your not i wish you suffer terribly before you die. That's just me.

Imagine if visiting Hindu's demanded American restaurants take beef of the menu. For some people dogs are food same as horses and rabbit. Get over it and yourselves.

That is exactly what I was thinking. Just because Americans place dogs above other animals don't mean other cultures do. An animal is an animal. If I was starving, even as an american, fido is going in the oven lol.

This ain't about eating. Im a vegetarian and let me tell you if i had to eat the dog i would. This is about cruelty. They got pics of the M.F wanting the health benefits of shark fin. So what do they do get them along side boat cut the fin off and let rest of shark go ALIVE. Those animals suffer a terrible death. They want benefits of bear gall bladder they kill the bear take only the bladder and leave the rest. WTF. Do what you gotta do but don't let yourself and everyone around you down

They skin dogs alive or boil them alive. It's about the cruelty. Shit, I've gone hunting and I eat meat. There's a humane way to do it and then there's a in-humane way to do it.

They show the most deplorable conditions to evoke our emotions. Also while our country isn't accustomed to those practices theirs is.

    Who are we to judge?
We get judged for keeping multiple dogs housed on chains or in kennels.
We get judges for sporting our dogs in legal events and hunts.

It's not up to us to change their beliefs or force our beliefs onto them. I think it's awful how they cram those dogs up in cages when they take them out to slaughter. But we do the same with Cattle, pigs and chickens. Dogs are not pets there, they are meat.

I'm sure they thinks it's disgusting dogs are treated better than children in some households in America....lol We got our own effin problems!

I am much more aligned with this way of thinking. Imagine how great the world would be if we worried about our own individual communities like we worry about other countries issues. Man oh man would the world be great.

Instead, we ignore what is going on in the very places we live while judging others for the way they live in theirs.

Yea maybe if people stopped putting domesticated animals on the same level as people and started putting that much effort into uplifting and caring about their fellow man/woman you would see a trickle down effect. Starving impoverished people could care less what fat bellied wasteful societies think about what and how they get it on their tables. Same for poachers. Bottom of the totem pole taking most the risk destroying they own environment. Those truths no matter how loud we scream them will always be drowned out by the roar of a families growling stomachs.
If you support any animal rights groups or even most animal conservation efforts before you support your fellow man you ain't did nothing but help your ego.
Remember animals can't change they situation but the often impoverished people who live around these animals can/can learn to. But nobody gives a shit while they starving.
So get off ya high horse that you can afford to water with San peligrino and feed quinoa and china seeds cause some people had to literally eat that horse just to survive

Mr reveloution i understand 100 percent family gotta eat. You have to do what you have to survive and things can get ugly. However this is ain't about hunger they have FOOD. THIS is about DELICACY. There is list of sick DELICACY that humans dont need to eat it has nothing to do with hunger they just believe it gives them a EDGE. Here is another one they take a monkey stick his head in a table alive and while he is screaming they tap his head with spoons and eat his brains. THINK im making it up do your homework. These things get get and does not have a thing to do with hunger or the family.

I wonder if a lion ever communicated to another lion... "Hey man, you're really inflicting unnecessary pain to that zebra, you should really kill it in a way it doesn't know it's being killed"

If people weren't in poverty most wouldn't poach. As far as domesticated animals like dogs they should be used for whatever the breeder/owner wants. If you really care about the planet then you should know domesticated animals are part of the problem for wild animals. I dont mean to sound like I dont like pets cause I do i have a few but if all pets died the earth would be fine better in fact. But if even only certain animals in the ecosystem died off ie bees everythings ducked. So I tend to steer my concerns towards what will affect the earth and my immediate environment and them eating the dogs they bred doesn't.
