Well, we added barn hunt to our sports list yesterday (and began our agility training this weekend). Has anybody else tried this? What a great group of people! Everybody was helpful, encouraging, and very welcoming. They remind me of rally people, which is always nice. The only thing I haven't liked about agility in the past is the snootiness of some people (reminds me of horse shows).

Halo passed her instinct test in 11 seconds. Her first hunt we NQed because of me breaking the rules lol (and she found the rat immediately after). Her second hunt she finished in 23.48 seconds, which included 3 attempts at the tunnel (I never did any training or practice for this...she's never done a tunnel). She got the fastest time of the weekend :) I'm excited to see how fast she is now that shes confident about the tunnel, jumping up on the bales, and REALLY wants that rat!

    very cool...
I heard of them barn hunting with terriers but never bulldogs,,,
I never knew there was trials for this...

Although getting certificates that say our dogs can hunt in man made set ups,,,
I prefer the old fashioned way of just doing the work at hand done for the sake of work and getting the job done...

the lures,,, ground competitions and barn hunts competitions are great for sport,,,
but the type of terriers being bred for these competitions take a back seat to the real workers,,,
and I dont think there is any real supplement to real work and feel the supplements sacrifice standards...

I agree that the real deal and the simulated hunts aren't one in the same. I did see a lot of uninterested terriers there which surprised me. I do know some of the people do real barn hunting with their dogs. A few actually have working farms and one goes through the public gardens in Boston hunting rats. Most people just do it for fun with dogs bred as pets or watered down akc show dogs, and to exercise their dogs' instincts in some capacity. You don't set many apbt doing it, that's for sure. But she certainly whipped the pants off of the terriers there, and I'd bet my arm that she'd be more than happy to kill off any rat in a barn she watched over ;)

  7. wow, a fake hunt. Sorry but these barn hunts are a joke and don't show if a dog will truly be useful in a hunt. Its a nicy nicy dog show thing that's all

Fake hunt tell that to the rat, better than having the dog at home doing nothing.

I guess you never sat back and watched the dogs go to work or you wouldn't say that .
