    That was me not treez.

I am the main one removing posts, trees and slim have grabbed a few but I am the one doing the most deleting.

It seems no matter what I do or say this thread is simply destined for the dump. Shame because it started out so informational.

Nice share frogs Lemm also had it mastered (no hatt!!!lol)...

Both Mr.MAYFIELD & Mr.LEMM were MASTERED and probably had more to do with changing THE ART OF CONDITIONING than most want to believe...

If all this BS stems from THE HAT,,, you haters need to get the " the heritage of american gameness, vol 1 rednecks
written by Mayfield and can be purchased on e bay or from fat bills collection...

Read the book a couple times and try to make sense of it and not let the rest hurt your feelings as he shares alot of his everyday theories from dogs to man and than you can maybe possibly add something to this thread...

Let's see if we can get back on track. I'd guess it's down to how they're raised that brings out the varying attitudes we see in dogs that make em have to be worked differently later in life. I work all of mine the same and generally keep to the same schedule. All mine are played with as pups and introduced to mills etc early in life and develop into easy to shape dogs, usually I have hold em back to stop em hurting themselves. It's only when I have a dog here raised elsewhere that I have to make alterations to the schedule and how I work it depending on that dog. Those hard to work dogs that have come here I've found, many are not played with or exercised often enough as pups so don't develop that enjoyment or work ethic of my own.

Agreed. I work my dogs as well. I have came across a few who just would not work, no drive at all. Those were worked differently because they would not work.

My point and/or belief even if two dogs are worked on the same piece of equipment they have to be worked differently. Ten minutes on one dog is not the same as it is on another based on each individual dog progresses differently throughout the keep. A person can have the same routines for their dogs, slat today, chains tomorrow, carpet the next, what ever, what ever. But no two dogs will be at the same point on a given day of a keep, therefore the individual dog's work will be altered to fit each individual dog.

Basically pick a day, say Day 26 of the keep and it is a slat mill day. If one dog runs the mill all out and at the XX amount of minutes he is ready to come off, or break in stride, or whatever, his time is up. Marking that time and having the next dog do the same and it being right for the second dog is a long shot at best.

Written keeps are nothing more, and should be used as nothing more than a guide. There is no possible way to say where a dog is going to be on Day 42 and XX amount of minutes of anything is what he needs. The written keeps are best used when following the exercises, not the actual minutes, and let the dog tell you every day what is required.

I like how Mayfield gets the 100 ft rope and walks 25 ft to let the dog empty out before work. I have put in miles walking beside the dog waiting on him to find his spot to empty out. This technique you just are waiting for him to empty pretty much while just waiting maybe reading a book. Lol
Lemm emptied, work for 15 then walk out for 20 until you get 3 15 minute sessions with a 5 minute walk between sessions and then you walk out 1 hour after the third session. Three sessions is his base and he won with just 45 minutes of mill work 1:10 walking and empty.... WOW
I wonder how many he won with 8 15 minute sessions? That would be the max amount lemms keep would allow if you never had a bad recovery. For a average Joe blow like me it's hard to believe but I bet he did it time and time again.
Mayfield mastered his catmillsand went to wearing a collar instead of a harness with good reason. Work on the cable run and mouth work was a few hours of the 6-10?
    Anyone feed salt?
And OMG that rub down with all the different mixtures should have skin tough as leather.

Look for newer keeps and feed plans. We are light years ahead of most of that now. Use them as ideas, baselines. Think of the fighters' training of yesteryear compared to today. Roadwork and mit/bag work are about the only constant. In my little experience, human workouts translate to dog workouts. Try and think of ways to train your dog like an athlete, not a runner. That's what I learned. The more you can successfully incorporate the better.

Dumping is all about routine. Lots of people talk about working a dog at the time of the show. It is not about working him during that time, AM vs. PM, it is about him being empty at that time. So if he is going to be worked at a certain time he has to be fed a certain amount of hours prior. Nail down the work time and then back up the feed time. Take him to the same spot and in a couple three days he will damn near dump on command. If the feed and work schedule are not routine the dumps will be just as non-routine.

This is one of the great myths/non truths in the game, working a dog at the same time as the time of the show. If you work a dog in the AM and show him in the PM, as far as conditioning, he is the same dog. And vice versa.

The entire premise of working a dog at the show time is not for the sake of the work, it is he has ate nearly 12 hours before/maybe 24 depending on preference, and he has assimilated/fueled up and ready to dump what is left.

He will then be empty on time. If it were not for factoring in the assimilation of food and the dumping process it would not matter when you worked or when you showed. The same dog would be the same dog. Mix it up and a dog working with a dump or two in him will lead to a multitude of health problems, from long term kidney damage to worse case, running hot when he needs not to run hot most.

Not speaking of anybody specifically but many people act like they know everything. I am not one of those. I can say I learn a lot from Slim's post. I appreciate your contribution, slim. Not only on this board and others but with the dogs as a whole. Thank you.

Both Lemm and Mayfield were spot on on certain things but as technology changes and new things are discovered most of both keeps are outdated. Mayfield I feel in certain areas was more advanced and is relevant today. Another reason I give Mayfield the nod is because a slatmill is a waste of time compared to a carpet mill.

I am the biggest fan of a carpet mill. But at the same time all of them are simply tools in the shed. All serve a purpose. It is best to use as many tools as the dog will use, and capitalize on his working strengths vs. wasting time trying to improve on his weaknesses. Basically, if he will work the crap out of a carpet mill but half asses on the slat mill. By all means let him use the carpet mill. Any two pieces can be inserted to the above statement.

Mr. Mayfield used the jenny pretty much better than anyone. I recently met the owner of Young's Tina/Young's Face/Monkey. He did dogs way back in the day. He has turned me on to a lot of things that they did back in the day. Food is pretty much the same but supplementation has changed. The work is really similar. The equipment is pretty much the same. Maybe the biggest difference is today's carpet mill is more of a belt mill compared to yesterday's carpet mill. He was to the turn table what Mayfield was to the jenny. I'm picking his brain every chance I get. Old school knowledge is awesome.

I dont think Mr.Lemms style of conditioning is outdated as it is about maximizing stress with out fully peaking via evalutaing heart rate,,,
his treadmill design is also revolutionary and many of todays better mills are just LEMMs upgraded...

As far as the very thing that Mr.Mayfield did to change the game is still being used by many dogman in the south,,,
I asked the chosen five(saiy,,,treezzz,,,agk,,, bamaman and???) to answer what that was but they dont seem to know...

    anybody???

agk,, you say you are not a history buff and it has noting to do with you which is probably right,,,
but that prized dog on your yard knows as bbbd taught him right,,, but the GEECH is not sharing...lol...
