I agree Goat but every Human and Animal are different...every Organism responds different to stress thus you get different results.

Old Goat,,, I wont say you cant do anything and dont disagree with what works for you...

I will say everything evolves no matter your beliefs and carver was never known as top conditioner,,,
but rather a know it all that never really applied what he preached...
And so know it all as he rally knew more than most about all facets of these bulldogs but hardly put a dog in top shape and beat some of the best
    from my findings....
Every loss he complained foul play and didnt loose too many in a game fashion...

Since this is a forty plus year old carver keep thats worked so well,,,
please some one tell me of carvers best fought battles where he conditioned the dog as I dont know of many...

I wont take any thing away from carvers accomplisments or yours old goat,,,
have you ever heard of boones keep,,, the rebels,,,VR or PDKs keep???
from the eighties when things changed dramaticaly and the methods thes people used included the weight of the dog...

If you work a small dog the same as a big one do you also feed them the same????
It just dont make sense to me but like I said I just share what I understand and have seen...

I'm just telling you what I seen to elias . And no lol you don't give the same amount of food for a little dog in a keep . Your changing what I said . Do you know anyone that knew Carver ? If not you can't go by what you read . And yes he was a peddler and couldn't put 1 in shape that good . But I didn't read that . And who cares about these other keeps ? It's funny how someone will try to convince you that you are wrong when they don't even know . You can tell me it's evolved but not if you don't want it to . And tell me is VR vince lol you must be kidding .

    I can agree to disagree...
I think feeding the dogs different amounts falls right in hand with everything else not being so cookie cutter...
as far as the four mentioned they were as ahead of their time in conditioning as mayfield was to drying them out,,,
I personally not a fan of the chemicals but their understanding of when why and how was the best and the y always brought in the best shape,,,
but with time they evolved their keeps to fit the dogs and the times...

I know you dont believe bulldogs have evolved or keeps and even handling since the old days but I believe it has,,,
maybe not as much as i think or you would like to admit but it has...

That's not what I said . I said if it works in other words why change it. You don't need to change . I know very well how things are today .

Of course it has.with all the new supplementation and understanding we have of the body it's only become better...if you go back to Elias post about muscle fiber makeup we are now understanding that aspect of training better too
    Good post Elias

Until a person gets out there and starts working em, reading keeps or talking conditioning is nothing but theory. It's only by doing it for real that practical knowledge and understanding develops. Is there any keep where an author states that a big dog should be worked longer than a smaller dog?

is there really any keep that has a set time to work all dogs???
they should be tailored to the dog and what they can do...

I mnetioned alot of thing from watching the dogs tounge and not a clock but those that are clock watchers wouldnt hear me though,,,
as i stated i learned this from a friend as he was doing it out on the field and talking to me on the phone...

no offense when I say he is in the dog man hall of fame and known on the east coast as being top flight conditioner,,,
he worked gr ch tippi,,, gr ch pocket rocket,,, ch blackie to name a few and lost a forty plus scratching contest into Hargroves,,,
Dirty conditioned well over one hundred dogs and only lost a quarter of the time and his last lost was to ch cocky mike...

Now if blue boy or the old goat can beat that I will forget what my old buddy shared with me and learn something old...

Your a reader I know . You have talked about people and dogs you knew nothing about but I never said a word on other stuff . Calm down Elias . I said some can do it not all . You think you know but you sure don't . So I will let you think what you want and keep watching again and not commenting so you can tell them what you read . But let me tell you on some of the things you talked in history you read them and what you read wasn't true . I know for a fact . Now I will go back to watching my clock and let you read bullshit stories about dogs that people didn't even see but wrote about and you believed lol .

"The next thing I found out when working a dog is that they can be put in shape most anyway a person sees fit."
The above statement is the 4 sentence in this Keep. Mayfield used the mill because he couldn't condition multiple dogs and work a real job. He improved the mill by making it 57' across so the dogs could run naturally and used a wide collar instead of a harness. He worked some dogs up to 10 hours on that mill. He never said he ran them during the day.
As for conditioning dogs in the heat, humidity and blazing hot sun I don't! I work my dogs at night and early morning because that is when they will be doing their job. Conditioning a big dog or little dog, I said it earlier my smaller dogs (under 40 lbs) are able to work longer before slowing down than my bigger dogs regardless of whatever conditioning work the dogs are doing. Exactly..big dog or small dog they're each individuals that get different responses from conditioning.what wears a big dog out a little dog will push through because of endurance. When a human athlete goes on a. Weight lifting program a bigger athlete with more muscle mass needs longer rest then the smaller athlete.Traing age, gender, lean muscle mass and fiber composition all have a say in how the athlete responds.
Here's an excerpt from an article written by Master trainer Charles Poliquin
Use Rest Intervals To your Advantage to Gain Strength & Size
Rest periods may be one of the most underutilized program variables, but they have a substantial effect on your results. Research shows the following:

    • Women either have reduced fatigue or recover faster than men from the same relative workout. They appear to need much less rest in between sets to attain a certain volume load. For example, they may be able to do just as many reps with a set weight using half the rest time.

    • Women also recover from a whole workout faster—one study showed women had recovered maximal strength after just 4 hours, whereas it took men 48!
This is just a small piece but believe me the dude has trained a whole lot of world champions

I'm always about learning. I would like some insight on how to work two dogs the same and they end up in great condition. I can't see it but I will be open minded.
I am looking for the enlightenment.

O'Shea could really shape a dog. In some cases the student takes the torch and runs. Mr. Hargrove often joked the grasshopper had taken the pebble from his hand.

The Vick dogs were a joke. He spent a lot of money on a number of good dogs. The downfall was the hood rats that were 'keeping it real' for him. Q could not poor piss out of a boot with the directions on the heel much less prepare a dog for a show.

I agree the internet has brought a lot to the light but some of that spot light is unwarranted and un-needed.

Like any information that is made available I pick and choose what I think works and give it a whirl. Some times it works and sometimes it does not.

One of the things the greats did was they were ever changing. Mr. Mayfield's writings show he moved through several pieces of equipment and several methods of conditioning to get where he thought he needed to be. All the while he read the dog. The dogs told him more or less, and even yes or no.

Robert DeNiro Wesley Snipes type shit lol. I can say that I've seen it work all types of ways. From someone that uses same keep exactly for each dogs, someone that uses different for each dog all the way to a person that has no set keep or schedule and just works the dog however they feel like each day and only monitors the weight to Come in right. More than one way to skin a cat but it's pretty dumb to try and convince someone they can't skin a cat a certain way especially if they've already skinned cats that way....

Now can we finally get back on topic folks. If EP wants to run his gums about me then he can just as easily start a thread about me. I have no connection to mayfield so why is my name even being brought up in a mayfield topic.
This thread I'm willing to bet will get dumped pretty soon as all the work to keep it on track is becoming a pain and a waste of my time.
