Indoor Springpole

My dog has very little interest in the spring pole when she's outside, she'd much rather chase lizards for hours. I started doing it inside and she won't give up. I live in an apartment so I cant really drill big holes. I decided to hang a rope from a pull up bar and that has worked well, just hate cleaning up the damn strings off the floor. I ordered some hide from overtyme (great customer service) and a 2 foot bungee with carabineers on the end from amazon. I am going to hook it up to the bar and then attach the hide to the other carabineer. Any thoughts on this? I'm a little worried about her biting the metal because I do not know how long the hide will hang yet. Any suggestions on improving this? The door frame does hold her pulling, she can even hang from it no problem.

 

Just use a tether between the hide and the metal

I use "para"cord to tie the bumper (or hide) to the spring. Home Depot
sells it for .09 per foot and it is rated to hold 450#. You don't want your dog busting his/her teeth on a chain or other metal.

 

Could you post a pic of the set up? Specifically of how you tied the hide & para

 

I see no mention of a "SPRING"?....Its called a Spring pole for a reason LOL.

 

There is no way that your dog is gonna benefit in any way by pulling on a fixed rope hanging from a door header in an apartment.

 

Sounds like she is using bungee cord for a spring and they work very well.

My only problem with the set-up is once you add in the short door height, 2' of bungee, carabiners, some paracord, and then a cowhide that thing will be close too dragging on the floor. I could easily see the dog just standing there and eating the hide.

 

Edit. I should have stated heavy duty bungee cord.

 

you would want to train the dog to be quiet on the springpole first ,mine screams like a banshee on it

 

My dog gets more work in/done when his rear legs are planted and front legs are almost touching unless he really digs in, which is the motivation. Although it looks cool to most, just hanging there is minimal work at best.

 

How and why would you do that??? It shows the dog likes it

I wish I could attach a picture. I have tried to upload pictures of my dogs LuLu an Mojo but i always get a "upload failed" message. It's irritates me! Anyhow the springs I use have a closed loop end and I use canvas "Bumpers" and knotted rope for my dogs. I just tie a double overhand knot but any good knot will hold. You can fold a hide so you have multiple layers for strength and use a punch or phillips tip screwdriver to punch a hole thru the top of the folded hide for the para cord which is very thin rope but strong.

 

Your neighbors may think your killing your dog or vice versa! LOL

 

If there is a problem with inside nose, don't do it!! You're suppose to ENCOURAGE the dog!!! NOT train him/her to be quiet on ANYTHING! If that's what they do and you don't like it, get another dog or 'line. I've steered away from Redboy and a couple others I heard were loud and always noisy. Can't have it in the city. Don't wanna risk upsetting neighbor wit late night barkin and the like. Pisses me off too. Training is different. Make him feel like he killin it even when he ain't. Ooooo kill em...lol

 

Thanks for the advice. The door height is pretty high and I think it'll be a nice set up. I will order the paracord today. I clearly understand that a spring pole needs a spring and the bungee will act as this. Also, I do this to get my dog tired and not really for the conditioning aspect (even though it does both) so the rope tied to the wall actually did do something, it got her tired.

 

That's what conditioning is. You get tired doing something, then next time you get less tired. You CONDITION your body or the dogs to do work, then more work! What you gone do when the springpole ain't enough?

 

A bicycle, quality padded harness and a 10ft. horse lead... done.

Thinking you're gonna wear that dog out in an a apartment is ludicrous.

 

Great way to run a dog and very true about the apartment situation.

 

Its only for rainy/cold days. She loves the bike, but its getting to cold for it.
