Working Airedale

I know this is a bulldog forum but I was wondering if anyone has any experience with Working Airedale Terriers. It seems Airedale fanciers describe their dogs as some sort of super dog. Guard as well as guardian breeds, hunts fur and feather with ease, and are as game as bulldogs. Is there any truth to these claims or is it all folklore?

 

ive only been around a couple of em and i liked em....real smart dogs. the bro/sis that my neighbor had were both real good watchdogs that you didnt wanna cross.. big dogs that were extremely animal aggressive, and i can imagine theyd have been a handfull for alotta dogs. but i seriously doubt they were as game as any bulldog.

 

If they were game as bulldogs, you should have seen them working the pit. Did you?

 

Wasnt there a story about an airedale that had won three fights against pit bulls? I think the story was told by Earl Tudor?

I would like to own a good Airedale one day also. I know there is a lot of exaggerated stories about their abilities in the pit. But I have also read about a credible dog man who swore that an Airedale won 3 matches against legit champion bulldogs. Just what I read. Even if it's true, it's got to be a rare Airedalde that is able to dot that.

 

well they arent pit dogs are they ...lol
but they are very capable big terriers. the biggest terrier to be precise. i have seen some airedales that were damn good guards and catchers. tall depends on what you want a dog for.:confused:

 

Those airedales I know will bring it to any other breed and if your pit ain't careful it will ring it to it too! They ain't called the King of Terrers for nothing! I did some research and noticed some bull dog in them. I know a dog man that has been breeding greatblood for over 40 years that has a respect for them he breeds them too nd says that they are a force to be reckoned with

 

Well, they were created for show, regardless of what people who like to imagine fanciful histories for their breeds would like to tell you. They certainly aren't terriers nor the "King of Terriers" because they're huge and absolutely worthless for going to ground so the name is a bit of a misnomer; but hey, so are American Pit Bull "Terriers." (There's a reason why most terriers are tiny and among terriers that ACTUALLY do terrierwork, the smaller the better.) But still, like many show breeds, there are a few people who take the minority individuals who are worth something and breed them together to create a working division of the breed. I'm sure that if you did some looking you could indeed find an Airedale that could do a fine job at a given task.

They were originally created for work. Man is made of earth, everything in man is in earth, and a working Airedale terrier will get in your ass and mostly anything else in the earth it gets a hold of which it does often. Quit watching them damn eukanuba airedales and other mutts. All terriers are are good at what they do. When you knock something before you try it I, that is called prejudice. Contempt prior to investigation. HS. The minority who keep the original stock is the ones with the truth. And the Airedale that you think I should look for I already got. YIMF

 

What are you, 12? "Man is made of earth?" That's some bullshit. "TERRIERS" are made to GO TO GROUND. A 40lb dog is not going to ground except MAYBE in one of those fake cement-lined foxholes the people who're too lazy to dig out their dog make. If you can't span its chest with your fingers overlapping at least one knuckle, it's shit for a terrier. Does that mean it's shit for a dog? No, not at all. But Chinaman for instance was a shitty fucking example of a terrier. A badass bulldog and a great sporting dog all-around but a shitty example for a terrier. If it can't get down a foxhole then it's a shit terrier, as plain as that, just like no matter how much an APBT is a great dock dog or weight pull dog or agility dog or whatever, if it's a cur, it's a shit example of an APBT.

 

i have yet to find where the airedale was created as a show dog. and certainly not here in England.

 

id rather have a staff /bullterrier than any of that crap. And that saying something!

 

if it was created as a show dog, the AKC site has the history all fucked up...

The undisputed "King of Terriers," the Airedale Terrier is the largest and hardiest of the terriers, and an all around useful dog. The breed's coat is hard, dense and wiry, with a softer undercoat, and comes in both tan and black and tan and grizzle. This breed was one of the first used for police duty in Germany and Great Britain and has also been popular with Presidents, including Woodrow Wilson, Warren Harding and Calvin Coolidge.
A Look Back
The Airedale is thought to have originated in the valley of the Aire in England, descended from the now extinct black-and-tan type terrier. The first Airedales looked completely different from how they appear today, and were known as Working, Waterside and Bingley Terriers. Eventually, the Airedale became known as a dog that could do it all, and was used for wartime guard, messenger duty, rodent control and hunting birds and game.

 

everybody says there the shit they definitely have a reputation among terrier people. just one ? how come none of the hog hunters use them. they should make a good hog dog right?

 

they dont bite and hold. at least the ones i saw didnt, and them two were always scrapping in the yard lol

 

I have heard of some being used as hog dogs and have heard they work great on coyote.

 

once i took 3 with my 2f amstaffs, my 2f amstaffs and 1 airedale took hold on a female boar, that airedale did not let go until it was finished, the other 2 airedales just jumped around barking lol
