Do you neuter your dogs?

My previous dog was an Am-Staff, had him for 13 years and he was not neutered. He was very DA, since around the 1 year mark and had to be on a lead at all times. My current pup is approaching 16 months, he's un-neutered and he's gotten into a couple of altercations, none of which he started. It's my first time owning a Staffy-bull; what are your opinions on the subject? I'm not necessarily looking to breed him or anything like that. I've always thought neutering dogs was a little off.

I believe that the fear or opposition to neutering dogs (EXCLUDING BREEDERS)based on "I wouldn't want to do that to MY balls" or "he needs a sex life" etc etc is so immature and incorrect. It's wrong to apply morals to a dog, dogs do not have morals.
We as humans know that it's wrong to just slap someone in the face, a dog does not. We as humans know it's wrong to shit on someone's lawn, a dog does not. We don't take any consideration when your dog shits on your lawn, we don't say "that's wrong! That's someone's property you're destroying and destroying someone's property is wrong" because that would be considered applying morals to a non-human animal. To not apply morals in that situation but apply it to a dog's balls is just so fucked up I can't understand how people do this. Chances are, the owner cares more about the dog's balls than he does.
People will go on and say "I think he'd know if his balls were missing!" well.. do you think it makes him depressed or feel less like a dog? Look at the dogs who have three legs, one eye, NO EYES, two legs, broken legs, are deaf, have to use doggy wheelchairs...etc.. those dogs look just as happy as any dog who has those parts.
In my opinion, I'm a-okay with neutering a dog, I'm actually pro-neutering. I believe that depending on a dog's breed, he should be neutered at around 1 year (this is to ensure he is fully developed and grown, studies have shown that neutering a dog too early can cause bone/joint issues... this is common in large breeds like Great Danes because they don't fully grow up until about 2 years)

I don't believe the "he wants his balls", "I wouldn't do that to me" etc arguments hold any water.

 

if you arent looking to breed him. neutering is a sensible option. also you wont have to worry about him chasing after bitches on heat !

 

Unless there is a medical reason I wouldn't neuter my dog before he is fully grown. Actually, another good reason would be to prevent pups if you have several dogs and can't separate them.

I have noticed that dogs that have been neutered before they are fully grown tend to become more fearful or insecure and they become disproportioned (tall and won't grow in width/less muscle). Which is quite logic as they lack certain hormones and the maturity phase.

Nope! Mine (males and females) are all intact, with the exception of my two rescues (BC and JRT) and my Min Pin (who had two false pregnancies). IMHO, they were born the way they were supposed to be. Plus, my dogs are all sport dogs and studies have shown that there are more health risks associated with neutering than not.

I agree with ultimatek9; I prefer them the way they are born. Not neutering them doesnt mean you are going to have puppies of them. As jonnim says there are enough dogs already (that are still waiting for a great home). The only reason to promote neutering is because there are a lot of people dont think of the bigger picture, only think shortterm, are impulsive and have no clue what they are doing.

Neuter. The food you feed will have a greater effect on the dogs health.
I myself currently have 2 that are neutered...one is still just batshit crazy and beyond driven. The other is an old timer

 

I personally feel any dog who has no known linage behind it another words a mutt should be spayed/ neutered mandatory. Other than that it's a personal choice ...

 

So responsible owners like me with intact mutts shouldnt be allowed to do so and keep their dogs in a natural more healthy state..?
I get your point, the majority of mutt bully bred dogs should be altered but a clean sweep effects responsible owners like me.

My dog is intact, he is a blue mutt, he will stay intact UNLESS I for some reason feel that I cannot for 110% without a shadow of a doubt keep him contained, which is less than slim to none, its not that hard to contain an intact animal..
Now most people I urdge to fix their animals, because most arent smart enough to contain them when mature or will purposely breed because "she/he is a great dog! I want another like her/him"
I would fix your pup at about a year, obviously you cant keep it out of scraps, doubt you could keep it from a bitch.

i am supposed to picking up a 7 month old male staff tomorrow.
he is a rescue dog.
if all goes well with other staff he will neutered.
i see nothing wrong in doing it.

I typically just leave things natural, and like bgblock said, responsible.
Some folks should not be able to own a dog, we all know that.

Also - I have a female, Patches, that is fixed. On her first heat, she had what is known as a vaginal prolapse. Basically the heat was so intence for her, and her insides began to well, ya...not good. Having her fixed, was the only way to guarentee that this would not happen in future. She ran a risk every heat, and breeding a dog that has this history is not smart. So - she was fixed, and typically carries a few more lbs, because they are hard to keep trim it seems.

IMO, neutering will do little, if anything, for DA. Actually, I have seen more DA from neutered dogs toward my intact males, than I have from other intact males of any breed. My Dogo, who was neutered at 4 mths old, became highly DA at about 30 months old.
It also does nothing for marking. My intacts do not mark inside the house, hotel rooms, at trials, etc. but then again I don't allow it. I believe most things are more of a training issue, as opposed to an intact/altered issue.

 

get him done,it won't bother him,a dought he will change much.. i had a staffy mixed with a parsons terrier used her to get down holes.. any way got her spayed to try calm her down but din't work she went on to kill a jack russell what came into the near by woods and unfortunatly she killed the dog so in the end she was put to sleep...he'll be fine

 

This is exactly what I was referring to. Neutered males will go on him. He's good, he stands his ground, but when he is attacked he'll go back.

 

That's not the point and it's a lame ass excuse to try and compare mutts to dogs who were properly selected and bred for a purpose and the traits they were originally selected for. when one of those ill bred mutts attack a human it gets labeled a pitbull but more than Half of them are not registered and come from no known linage but they get lumped in with my dogs I find it insulting not to mention most of those dogs are off back yard breedings fucktards are breeding anything together and selling them off as pits. Fact is there are way to many irresponsible owners who get what they think is a pitbull and want to breed it not knowing a damn thing about where those dogs come from I think all shelter dogs should be killed if a dog gets taken in off the streets and the owner doesn't come to claim it after so many days put the dog down. Is it fair for Apbt owners like myself who is not only a responsible owner but went out and purchased good dogs bred to the highest standards of the breed to have shelter mutts lumped in with my dogs or other apbt owners who breed to produce nothing but quality dogs? Kind of a slap in our faces when those dogs are the reason why most of us are fighting to keep our dogs not to mention the shitty ass owners who keep those dogs now like I said its my opinion our breed does not have anymore room for fuck ups. I am not trying to offend anyone who chooses to feed mutts this is jut how I see it at the end of the day your dogs do what you want.

 

I wanted to add because people continue to rescue and keep mutts I honestly feel that for The sake of Bsl and preserving breeds mutts should not be able to reproduce and since most people are irresponsible and breeds like the Apbt are in danger of being outlawed everywhere it's best to make it so they can't ever reproduce accidents are known to happen even with the most responsible folks. The Apbt is just way too popular and grossly over bred.
