whats with the KC put a standard on these dogs,it was the so called dogmen of the time that aproached the KC with a written standard to get the breed reconised, funnily enough the KC gets abuse and these old donyens of the breed get put on pedistalls...

jonnim...it was show fanciers that got them recognized...do you believe the men who worked the dogs back then wanted to stand in a ring posing with their dogs ?....it was show fanciers who got the breed f:cked

unlike now people would only know who was matching dogs if they themselfs ware matching dogs, no internet, no phones in homes back then, unless u ware rich...the show people are and where the 1s who wrote books put articles in magazines, so its there names and who they write about who everyone remembers... i remember a story by j mallen about trying his dog in a cellar with a badger..his dog was game but died from his injuries...but i tell u , a good staff would kill a badger on top of the soil..in a earth its different, so im not sure if mallen was the real mc coy or just a show person with the old fashion image of what show people think was like

I thought the original staff wasn't actually a staff but a pit dog and size didn't matter only thing that mattered was wether a dog could perform in the pit, if a dog proved good at his job then they used it to breed from if not then they did not. All this about staffs being a certain size is BS, there was good little uns, good medium size dogs and good big uns. One would win one day and another a different day, and thats it.

  7. When a Stafford is what a staff should be it is something special they come along not to often .
A good stafford is with a silent man that is the main problem to others
    Scarecrows duke for example

i think you also half to take in that don't matter if the guy u got your dog from worked dogs in a sence that if yours dont work whats that matter but here is the thing if u plan to breed and strive for better dogs you will get what your looking for with a well played breeding program you can improve vast amounts to your own personal standard but your best luck is to get your dogs from some one that your trust that will have higher %s of better dogs that you are looking for what ever that might be

well it seems that the objective of this thread is that the taller, balanced staffs that we are producing, are of the original type, that is my opion. The staffs were bred for fighting in the pits, not just pit dogs... before they became a show breed. They used to judge the final two dogs on scares and the game from within the dogs which they called a face off, with two dogs in each others face and the first to go will be considered the winner and all the attributes that come with showing.... at the end of the day the Stafford is the one that is missing out on the type that is being bred and not for the correct structure of the breed. I just don't understand why a they are so critical on hieght when I know of dogs over the stanard have become Grand champions.

My only hope to you is if your new.. is not to put money in the pockets of the show type breeders and those who breed to win blue ribbons. comb these threads and make a decision for the better of the breed!! ask your self can i responsibly own a stafford and endure all that is necessary?

the men that put forward these recommendations to the KC, it is only that, the KC did not have to engage these requirements to the standard. With what is actually happening with the dogs is called evolution, they will keep getting better which is to be expected. Show dogs are only that show dogs....I have seen it for myself that the dogs have won before they even step into the ring. So how is that justification to the breed....people then breed to those dogs because they believe they are superior....sorry wrong... I have seen awesome dogs without any ribbons and thats is expected...but what people really need to do is talk to long time breeders look at their pedigree's and learn as much as possible, don't go with your heart but go with your knowledge/head.
