Kennel and Dog House set up

why did you use decking ?? i think it would be hard to keep clean and over here decking is lethal when its wet and then freezes .

 

i have used wood surefaces for floors i found it hard to keep it clean...smooth surface is easier .i have used lanoleum over plywood they wind up chewing it up..thought about outdoor carpet sure it wouls wind up the same way..thats why l like the gravel ..jmo

 

does the gravel not smell after time ?

 

i had the top covered at first only, i got paranoid because the dog would jump up and down hitting the top of the cover. i ended thinking that it would somehow climp out and because of that i added more panels to the top to prevent the jumping. i feel 100% better when i leave the house now.

things work for different people and there dogs though. your wood around the base of your kennel i really like that idea. looks like the dog couldnt dig out even if it wanted.

 

Space the decking boards around an inch to an inch and a quarter apart and just about everthing falls through the cracks. What doesnt is easily sprayed off with a hose and nozzle. Once a week take a pump up sprayer with strong Lysol or bleach in it and spray the floor down then rinse it off after a few minutes. The deck is 24" off of the ground. I then go around back and take a garden rake with a long handle and rake everything out from under the kennels and dispose of. Sling a little lime under there just enough to cover the ground. There's a metal roof over the kennels that keeps them pretty dry. When its cold the deck has iced up some after cleaning but they face the south and no colder than its been the little bit of ice melts off by noon. if its cold and doesnt they will mostly stay in thier houses anyway.

 

they look good, i may do the board thing in the future. it seems like the cleanest way to go.

 

The gravel is a smooth hard rock. It has no dust and does NOT crush over time. I simply scoop up the poop daily and about once a week hose it down very well and spray it down with a Nolvasan (generic name is chlorhexidine). You mix 2 ounces with a gallon of water and spray it with a pump up sprayer. Smells good and disinfects everything! Around here about $60 worth of gravel is enough to fill one kennel about 4 inches deep. That was delivered too

Its just like anything else you have to wash it and disinfect it. Read above I explain how.

 

Those are nice ass kennels. In the future I may go to the heavier welded wire type you're using. The fence flooring is nailed to all the wooden framing so you are correct. There is absolutely no digging out.

 

I too have an escape artist and destructo dog. All that wood, YUMMY!Climbs like a cat. I like welded wire panels, havent lost a tooth yet. 11 guage is too light. Love that photo, makes me laugh, but only because I dont have to fix it, AGAIN. Yummy wooden dog house too. I make them out of round steel stock tanks and cut a hole in the side and line the bottom seamlessly so no place to work on chewing.The bottom liner allows insulation. Sides, inside, insulated and lined. Make the top low so they cant get leverage to take it all apart. Just tall enough to turn around and lay down. Snow will crush a kennel if the snow can pile up. I have two crushed greenhouses from snow weight that held up a felled tree, will be building those again after the first year experiment. 4 ft of snow and it better be able to pass through or the roof will cave in and doggie will say "see ya". I like concrete floors. I dont have a well or city water(harvest water, 11K gallons capacity in my tanks), so I use a power washer once everything defrosts and in the meantime the snow shovel and de-ice the ss buckets every day. I have some doggie dens and if the dog never learns to destruct they will survive, although one is covered with block and lined on the outside after destructo worked it over. He didnt like where his kennel was. Your kennel looks like nice work and I hope it works out, but I have had some of the worst and some of least troublesome dogs. I have found a chain dog is much more destructive than a kennel raised one that never learns he can chew out or escape. I just dont like to fix it twice, or three times. Its too much work. I am a female person of some seniority and built this all myself with some help setting up the welded panels after we moved them all after the raid. They are heavy.

 

I use kennels because of my location. If it weren't for that I may also use chain set ups.

 

Redpet if you was talking about my wooden houses that pic was right before I wrapped them in sheet metal. I know all about chewers. I like the welded wire panels but I can get the used chainlink panels that need a little work done to them for $5 a piece. I also had 300' x 6' of the heavy chainlink fence from an army base gave to me that I use to replace the lightweight stuff with when needed so it all works out. Boogie and Hardluck both have nice setups. I like overhead cable runs the best.

 

Welded, heavy gauge none of that really matters to determined, asshole of a dog. This was done during a six hour roadtrip. The dog looked like a rapper with platinum teeth.

You can Make it escape proof... It just depends how much you want to spend and if you own the property to make something more permanent. But that pic magnoliaotis posted is kind of impressive lol

This gravel is very smooth and very comfortable for the dogs to lay in. It's very clean also. No dust or dirt. Washes easy and easy to disinfect. I would never use wood. Way too much bacteria gets trapped in it no matter how much you clean it. It's still always going to have some in it. Concrete is the same just not as bad. Of course the gravel can have it too, but if you keep it sprayed down regularly with disinfectant I think it's the best choice. Just my opinion.

 

What can I say? I am just a dumbass. We both can hold it for 6 hours. It never crossed my mind the crazy fool would try to bite his way out. Lesson learned the hard way.

 

Most of the set ups on this thread are above average. My point and others is that some of these mutts should not and cannot be housed that way. I have some that would be content in one of Boogie's setups and others that would be running loose soon after I turned my back. I have seen beagles chew out of chain link, so go figure what a bulldog will do once he/she wants out. Do not count on the fact that they were raised and conditioned to be in there to prevent them from one day deciding enough is enough, I want out. I am speaking from experience and trying to save folks from the headaches I've had. I like Bman's set up and a modified version would work for some of my mutts, but those jackwagons that seem to find their way onto my feedbill seem to like the flavor of metal. It all depends on your knowledge of what you are trying to contain and I've learned to never underestimate these mutt's desire to do what they want to do. Take it from a dick.

I whole heartedly agree with everything you're saying. I pointed out in one of the posts that it is just like a chain and should be inspected daily and that any set up, including mine can and will fail with the right dog. As a matter of fact, I brought home a bitch Friday that I'm doing a breeding with and she tore out of one of them today. Have the door off now fixing it and will have it back on tomorrow Needless to say she won't be back in any of them. Just asking for trouble if I do put her back in one.

Common sense is what it takes to keep these dogs out of harms way. What works for one may not work for the other. Thanks for the compliment on the set up. It works well to good for the most part.
