    hmots,
This pic is of a staff from about 20 yrs ago, like I said, there are some shit staffs but there are also some good uns. There was a fad yrs ago that for some unknown reason breeders and judges started to favor low to the ground barrel type staffs so selectively bred them smaller and thicker set, that is over now and we are now seeing some better more functional staffs, taller and leaner that look like they could actually do a job even if they can't. I do understand where you are coming from and agree with alot of what you say, it's just some of what I read is ridiculous.
    Peace

That's great. Their breeding more functional staffords that LOOK like they could do the job, even if they can't. What a freaking joke.

True ther have been improvments my only point is that ,no matter what staffs you breed, your not gonna breed that bulldog looking pos.12is refering to obvious late outcrossing w/"bulldogs"of today.they are a far cry from the bulldog types that were used in the foundations of our breeds.the mastiff faced bullies were at first tried to be passed off asselective bred apbt's ,we all know that not to b the case.
Hero we are not hateing on the breed ,its our breed of choice ,just people and orginizatoins that forget haritage for show points.keep up the good work w/your pup.
I can appreciate your efforts and yer pup and what some folks are trying to do now

There has always been more fuctional staffords it was the show that ruined em and i bet you none of these fuctional staffords as you call them would never win a kc show if they were taller as they are not too standard and this is the show world mentality and not sure how you can say it is over known fact some different blood was infused into some show stuff

Wasnt the height of the show standard lowered like a few times and weight was kept the same? How did breeders adjust for the next up coming show standards???

you have just hit the nail squarely on the head !!!! the standard was written up for folk who show there dogs,so why on earth folk who dont show are so obsessed with the standard ill never know ? Know doubt some one will say they wanna preserve the breed, well there's enough breeds in trouble nowadays, just be happy with what you have and concentrate on it.

there's some very functional looking staffords at shows these days nasher as you well know, again blame a very small minority of stafford owners for the state the breeds in,dont seem to find a thread thanking the show goers for the £££££ they raise for the AHT ?

dunno bout bulldog but does know one think with the lack of substance and bone in a lot of todays staffords that a whippet has been used some where ?,some have the build and legs of a running dog which a stafford is certainly not ?

staffords have been crossed into whippets for years to give them more jaw, bone and heart. some of these pups would certainly throw back to staffords but i can"t see how it would be done to favour the stafford.

Some do outcross for a spacific type of work I would not agree if they tried to pass this cross as a stafford rather than what they truly are. I see your poimt but would more relate to someone who said "my stafford/whippet x os a hell of a deer hound"than one who would stack up an obvious cross of any combination and say "look at my beautifull stafford". I would b just as critical of a "stafford "standing on twigs as I am one proped up on stumps

    nasher Big Dog

Yes that is true but a show judge would not favour a taller dog and some show folk would tell you an 18 inch stafford was a cross breed as it was not to standard that is my point that some people are so blinkered on the standard.

fuck, my dog got last place because he was tall and pulled when walking...,ain't spending much money with close minded ignorants, i prefer taking the dog to do sports or hunting...

the problem ain't staffords themselfs, its the people around them, money lovers

The arument about size in staffords has been going on for decades and will no doubt go on for more decades. Originally only one thing mattered for he stafford and that was if it could perform in the pit size and looks didn't matter. Then dog fighting was made illegal so the owners had to do something else with their dogs (showing), this meant there had to be a standard drawn up. The original standard (1935) regarding height & weight was 16 to 18 inces to the withers (shoulder) and between 28 & 38lbs, bitches 4lbs less. It was amended in 1948 to height 14 to 16 inches to the withers and between 28 & 38lbs 4lbs less for bitches, this is still the same today. The original standard was drawn up by men that fought their dogs, they drew the standard to say what they thought would be the ideal dog for the pit. Now we can all continue to argue the toss about all this or we can accept that it is the way it is and just make the most of what we've got, or those that want a more athletic dog can develop their own type and go from there!
