New Pit Owner

One more question I forgot to ask. My 3 year old is really well behaved and follows commands really good until he spots a rabbit, cat, or squirrel. Then I'm in trouble.... he has liked to kill me going after these animals and the crazy thing is he's not trying to go after them to kill them. He just likes running after them and then if they run up a tree or in a hole. He's done and will listen to me again. Any suggestions for this behavior will be greatly appreciated as before I take him out I have to check my yard for any of these animals and chase them off.

 

there is nothing wrong with this behavior hes acting as he should.
only advise i could give on that is make sure he is well contained at all times and do your best to keep him out of trouble.your not gonna remove the pray drive from a pit bull and really,why would you want to?

 

What you are seeing is something called, "Prey Drive".
and as much as people want they can try to humanize dogs but the fact of the matter is.. they are dogs and they have instincts. Now you can TRY distraction work by teaching the dog to ignore it and can somewhat control it but there is no real way to stop the behavior that was bred into the dog and like Spliff said, Why would you want to remove the prey drive from a pit bull?
