I just got a new dog last night, she does not listen at all when being called. I had to chase her down the road this morning because I made the mistake of letting her off the run without a leash on. How do I make her come when I call her? She acted like she didn't even know her name!

  2. I wouldn't ever let her off leash in an environment that is not secured.

Even with great recall training I picture a bulldog seeing something it really wants as becoming a stronger want than coming back to you, so I'd always keep the dog on leash personally.

You also just got this dog last night, why would she care about listening to you for a recall?

Leerburg has a whole bunch of recall training videos for example:
    Leerburg Streaming Video

If you go to youtube you can also look up "recall training" and get a ton of other techniques. You want to pick the one that works best for what motivates your dog.

However, I want to stress one last time, just because you teach her a recall doesn't mean you should let her off leash on public property.

Thanks for the video and tips. Im hoping the person Im renting from hurries up with his supposed fence he wants to put in, maybe that will help a little. Im afraid that she will jump it though :-(

  4. She probably will hah hah! I'd keep her secured if you cannot be right there watching her. I would work on recall training, just wouldn't count on it to be fool proof (like taking her to a beach off leash etc would still be a poor choice in my opinion).

    ...

This is a part of reason why we have BSL...

Never allow your dogs to be unleashed. NEVER. It is irresponsible. It is a potential risk that the dog will go after someones cat and kill it. Or someone walking there poodle or dog on a leash, and then your offleash amstaff/pit bull mix attacks and it ends up on the news for a "pit bull attack" and brings bsl/you possibly get charged/sued. Not to mention your dog can get ran over by a car.

Why have a dog offleash??? What is the point? Just to look cool and act smart that your dog is "obedient" ???? or because you want your dog to be "free" and run around and happy???? never understood. Unless of course you do boar hunting and if your dog is leashed, it gets tangled up on something and gets stuck in the woods etc. Or other sporting activities that require it to be leashless..(coyote hunting etc. )

Cats should NOT be outdoors anyway. Feral cats suck. In my opinion if an owner lets a cat out, not only are the breaking the law in the county(most animal control laws are the same, no dogs or cats off leash in 99% of ordinances nation wide) I live but they shouldn't complain if something happens to it. Just like dog owners who let dogs off leash deserve what happens to their pets.

Help control the feral cat population PLEASE do not feed them (that is illegal too) capture them and take to animal control so they can be humainly destroyed (because the shelters are overcrowded with damn cats and they listen to DuckMike
    :D).

Jelet said it could kill someones cat like it would have been her fault....I was simply pointing out the fact that the cat shouldn't be out there either. So it would be TWO wrongs, which still is not right.

I agree with your chain comment, on another sight this person has a neighbor bothering the dog, and tried leads but the dog snaps them....As soon as you say chain they are like OMG. Well your dog ain't gonna snap a chain. If people would look past the sterotypes and actually think what it real purpose is.

Sure both parties would be at fault. But it means very little with bsl.

Just google pit bull mauls cat. Or pit bull kills cat.

    for example.

Pit bull that killed cat in Port St. Lucie might have killed other animals in area TCPalm.com

    [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=huHMXPfSkHI[/ame]

This is tasty food to feed bsl...

And even though both parties are not innocent for nothing. The person with the pit bull would get in trouble in a court of law.(unless the person with the cat is a newb with law stuff and poor to afford a decent a lawyer)

    pit bull trespasses into property
    pit bull assaults cat
pit bull is breaking leash law.

    vs

cat breaks leash law while on property

Basically what your saying is If I see a cat UNLEASHED, I can take a bat and beat it.-assaulting it..

lol i m untouchable. since the cat breaks leash law. lolz. 2 wrongs :]]]]

    nope... it dont mean sht.

Oh I agree, it just frustrates me. I kinda vented here, sorry if it was the inappropriate post. People with any type of animals and fail to contain them annoy me. I have had a few run ins with the morons letting their dogs run. Just this week I was in a public park, sign says dogs on leash, it was 630 am, there are the typicals, few homeless and one old guy. Then there is this idiot letting his wiemer run after the birds, ibis which are not you know little, I am walking through and luckily he catches his dog and leashes it, not before it attempted to come my way. And says to the old man, "guess I need to get here earlier to let him run" WTF. What is wrong with people.

Well, then I guess you understand how the dog feels. After all, you've been here a while, but still the whole proper containment of dogs, especially dogs you don't know and don't know you concept seems to have disappeared from your mind.
