Ed reid

The urban myth was always that Reid dogs were ear suckers, boring to watch, take an arm chair because you'll be there all night etc, maybe in some cases that was true but I suspect it was mostly sour grapes and jealous rumour by owners of dogs they defeated because 'they really could fight all night'.. Scar Kennel's CH.Jacko, CH.Sheena Black, CH.Klogger and Black Max 2xw - all Reid crosses - went through dogs faster than parvo and the percentage of box dogs per litter was well above average, I don't think it got any better than that and only a question of selecting stock for next generations. then the DDA came in

 

would have a dog any day of the week coming down from the Scotsmans max line of dogs over the dogs listed above, sheena black lost in 20 mins and is way over rated jacko should have stayed retired but he didn't and to say if he had of met currstopper in his prime would have been another outcome is a joke, theres no getting away from the fact that ed reid bred great dogs but with a lot of luck involved

 

Fair comments AB but did you ever see CH Sheena Black and why do you think she was overated? Why is the concept CH.Jacko defeating CH.Curstopper if they'd met in Jacko's prime a joke? Did you ever see CH.Jacko in his prime and did you know he was pts shortly after the Curstopper show due to a degenerative nerve disorder.. Taking nothing away from CH.Curstopper, he was a truly game dog and he did what he was bred for but Jacko was '8 YEARS OLD' and that's a fact not a joke!

 

Rayrock told me out of his own mouth he never believed Curstopper could have defeated Jacko in his prime.. Straight from the man who bred CH.Curstopper and owned his sister Grizzly 2xw.

 

..in saying that og..a few(not all) i knew could have been what ya call ear suckers,,but also a decent head dog..but all would go across all day,,was talking about them days with a friend and we wondered could some(not only reid dogs) have been over conditioned/mouth removed/etc/etc..back then..and could have been better.....anyway in ending..would make room for one now...mmm

 

Good point Bluebull.. Maybe what you spoke of with your friend was true?.. I thought this myself many times.. We treated them like machines and when they won it was despite us, not because of us... Scar Kennels ran a different version of Reid crosses through CH's Klogger, Jacko, Sheena Black and Max (not scotsman's) Their dogs were devastating... Scar Kennels were IMO the best UK camp of the 1980's, their dogs were outstanding and their conditioning superb.. Thanks again to everyone who contributed to this thread, I really enjoyed it.

 

Was max charlie archie hagar yogi and curstopper all head dogs ?

 

They said max gavoured the throat at the end ....imo them type of dogs ate deadly .....just wondered what the others styles were ?

Max was a straight ahead honest dog, he gave weight away in every one of his shows forcing him to constantly work from the bottom, he developed a style of burying into the throat of his opponent, more of a defense tactic to nullify the effectiveness of the larger opponent than an offensive technique but it worked for him again and again.. Different from CH.Boon who would wait his chance for the throat and when he got it, the game was over, at least it was for Scar 2xw.

 

Max, Yogi, Bash, Curstopper, Billy, Grizzly, Digger, Boss etc all fought straight ahead, willing to mix it up with their opponents with varying individual traits within that style .. Hagar and Charlie were outstanding ear dogs.. Archie was a wide open, hard mouth killer and GR.CH.Bill would have probably have beat them all in one night

I found these dogs weren't hard mouthed and the good ones were in the main counter punchers. Holding dogs that always had a nip countering the other dogs. They were intelligent enough to keep their holds and athletic enough to work em out when the opportunity arose.
I don't think over conditioning was much of a factor, but rather an excuse. What I feel affected dogs back then was over work, by that I mean many were rolled way to often imo and suffered mentally. And if they lost or didn't look as good as they had done previously, conditioning was the excuse used.

 

I guess you don't like the Scotsman much od don't have much time for him myself but his dogs yes, to me sheena black is just a rough cur maybe to you shes an ace but that's ok, talking about curstopper v jacko in jacko,s prime is like talking about ali v Tyson in there prime its never going to happen, and to say bill would have beat all the dogs you listed in one night he would have his hands full lol

 

Yarrakin was never a man you could call stupid, at best a smart player, at worst a hustler, always liked him though another giant of the game in those days was northern lad, his knowledge and stories could make the best book yet.. He called Jacko a cur when Jacko refused to courtesy against a Mayfield dog he defeated, the fact the Mayfield dog was dead at the time escaped northern lad and he offered to match Winger 1xw (redboy/jocko) against Jacko.. Winger only lasted 14 minutes, went the same way as the Mayfield dog before him.. Northern lad told Jacko's owner " Get that dog to America he'll, make GR.CH.

My opinion of Scotsman don't come into this and neither will it for fear of ruining a good thread.. Ali v's Tyson never happened but Jacko v's Curstopper did and that was my point.. I''m sure most people understood when I said Bill would beat them all in one night, it was light hearted banter.. Sheena Black was a 4xw going for her GR.CH and while she could never be considered 'dead game' do you really believe she was a rough cur? because Bullyson only won 2 shows before he quit so by your calculation does that make Bullyson a double rough cur?

 

oldguy you asked why I thought sheena black was overrated and I said, it was you that said jacko would have beaten curstopper in his prime we know the outcome when they met and that cant be changed plenty of dogs and boxers lost because of age but that's there camps fault , why bring Bullyson into it

It just seemed an obvious response when you called CH Sheena Black a rough cur, I accept you're entitled to your opinions and may I say Yarrakin lad totally agreed with you but fact is Sheena Black won 4 before she quit on top v's Limey's Miss Fox, Bullyson won 2 before he quit v's Bennybob, Finley's Bo won 3 before he quit v's Vindicator and Snooty won 2 before he quit v's Ox so I wondered if those dogs are also rough curs or does that tag only apply to CH.Sheena Black?
