I have heard that about Pug blood being added to show Staff's but I aint buying it. Its all rumour, I know a man round my way and he has been showing Staff's for over 40 years, I said this to him before and he just said its an old wifes tail, this fella thankfully breeds a bigger type of show staff than the pug lookalikes

true, coursing greyhounds of the 19th century weighed 40-60 pounds, now a 95 pounder wouldnt raise that many eyebrows these days(a different type of coursing now) -just shows what a change that a century or so of selective breeding can do.

How do you explain the bug eyes in certain lines

It's common practise to outcross show breeds to fit a certain standard... Look at the bobtailed boxer, they outcrossed to Welsh Corgi's just for a bob tail!!! why wouldn't show folk add pug to reduce the size/muzzle length/etc of the STBT ?

I dont think pug was crossed into the staff's but was put in bulldogs to bring the size down and thats were the pig tail came from,Then I think some breeders crossed the bulldogs with their staff's to get better rose ears and bigger head and chest. And you some time's see the same pig tail in staffs. You started seeing this look in the staffs back in the 60s.

I´ll make it as simple as possible matty:
    Working SBT = GOKART
Game bred APBT = FORMULA 1

i've seen (and owned) plenty of gamebred apbt's that were roller skates with a wheel missing.

take each dog on its own merits.good dogs are good dogs regardless of pedigree.

agreed with what's said above. i've seen a patterdale whopped a pit's ass so bad the owner was embarrased. are all patts better because of what i saw? no are they less? no. just be honest with what you have at home and keep them true to type, simple as

There`s no way Staffords have pug in them.

The bug eyes referred to in some lines of show dogs are what people call an "Alien Look" it is from selective breeding by breeders that are breeding for the "over-done" type but some dogs are getting the shitty end of the stick eg. extra short muzzle, bug eyes etc. Even people that breed show Staffords think that they look ridiculous.

Im sure there are show dogs with pug in them you have only got to see the size of some of the staffords churned out, then praised as its from show ch blah blah blah and then claimed to be a real stafford.
Because it is the perfect height and weight etc but a true stafford is then criticised because this is not right etc etc then they try to say it is crossed etc or its a apbt cross.
Lets face it the show people have fucked them up along with lots of other working dogs as perfection is what they strive for not what the dog is used for:dogkiss:

How can you say there's " No way "??? How would you possibly know what's in there unless you was at every breeding that ever took place ?

Yes of course you are right, you could never be 100% about anything unless you was there.

What possible reason could there be for adding Pug? Having a muzzle that is too short and bug eyes comes from shit breeding. There are many examples of the kind of dog you mentioned, there is one really bad one around at the moment.

Although up until now there have been very few more athletic show Staffords in the US, there are in the UK two very fifferent types of show dog. And while the more athletic types (often called Whippets by those that prefer the other type) are nothing like a working Stafford they are much more functional than the type that most people associate with show Staffords.

Yeah mate, people always say that they crossed. Had a similar dog and personally I couldn`t be 100% as the paperwork wasn`t in order but the dog was good.

Honest people think ppl can know whats pure. Best looking "staff" I seen was actually a pitbull boston terrier cross. 30 lb pure muscle tall and athletic and fiery as hell at 10 months I have yet to see a real staff that looked as good. Still my favorite looking dog despite the stupid cross.

Am I being dumb here but if it was a boston terreir x pit how the bloody hell was it a staff and not a boston terrier x pit ? :D

    TheIII Big Dog

LoL yeah....I did the " " because everyone was talking about how ppl crossed in pug and other random breeds into the staffs & pass them off as pure.
The dog in question is a mutt...but looks and acts perfect to type is what I was getting at. My friend who owns him is honest about his dogs.

So what are peoples opinions? Do people go along with the idea that the apbt is a direct descendent of the bulldog or do you believe they are crosses between bulldogs and terriers?
