Usually I wait until the dog is about a year and a half myself before I start any real work with him. Reason I do this is the dogs bones and such are good and also he has the mental capacity needed for hard work. A lot of times folks forget that when a dog is a year old he is still a pup and waiting a extra 6 months isn't going to do any harm.

Now with that said, I do age appropriate work with the dog from the time they are little puppies, Say I have a 8 week old pup for instance; I am not going to run the pup on a treadmill or that but I do like to let them get out there and walk and do what ever they want outside. I just take the lead off and we go for a walk, I let them run and just be pups. Builds up their confidence to when they get to experience all sorts of new stuff.

Then as they age we will play a little tug and things of that nature but always be sure that you take into consideration that the teeth and jaws need attention payed to them so you don't cause any harm.

Good rule of thumb is keep it age appropriate and then at about a year and a half you can start really working them. And remember that even if your dog looks grown at 10 months old or that; He is not, They are still pups. Just like if you happen to be a big boy and lived in the country, I know my father expected me to do a grown mans work but he forgot that even though I was about 5''10 when I was about 11 years old I still was a boy and couldn't quite do everything that a grown man could.

I agree with old timer and I wait till 18 months. I like to make sure the bones a sturdy. My pups do go for long walks and light jogs at 12 months but I don't start the ground and pound work till they are 1.5-2 years.

imho i suppose every dog is different.....but its down to the owner to know when its the right time!.....it should obviously be showing the signs, but i believe it should be mature enough in mind and body to actually carry it out!some dogs start early......full of fire.....but if its too young you might aswell hold back a bit longer......its fire will still be burning 3-6 months later.nothing worse than ruining a dog to early or young imo

road work is one thing, but i get pups in the water and swimming as early as they are willing, theyll stay on shore when theyre tired. i use this as a serious workout when mature, so getting them in and familiar with the water is important imo.
