Whats your take on people who breed or mouth? Do you breed for only gameness and just get lucky sometimes? At some point do u add mouth to your line if its lacking? This is just a conversation starters, i know alot of people have different takes on this for one reason or another. I think it might be a good topic. :)

when the punisher gasses and the game dog survives the fury, which trait becomes more useful then? gameness is what these dogs have been bred for and culled for lacking as long as theyve been around.

Game is #1 in my books, if you got a dog thats gonna quit on ya, no point in it having a hard mouth or anything else for that matter, coz at the end of the day if he stops and fails ya - hes just another cur with a hard mouth.

If you've got some real soft mouthed dogs that are good everywhere else, you can always cross into a line more noted for mouth if you really want to.

Mouth is great don't get me wrong, a dog that can do some serious damage in a short amount of time is never a bad thing. But its not the only thing. If he can't back it up with wind and game - whats the point of a one bite wonder? Not gonna be much good to ya now is it?

there have been dogs in the past that are legends and foundation dogs (Chinaman as a well known example) that have the unresolved question..."were they truly game?"

Say you have 2 dogs and we are rating them on a scale of 1-5
    Dog A: Game=4 Mouth =4
    Dog B: Game=5 Mouth =2
Which dog would you rather have?

    On the topic of mouth:

Has anyone ever had a dog that developed late in that aspect? Or perhaps were crushers in puppyhood but started having a soft mouth after teething and shortly into adolescence?

Dog B. Since 5 is the highest. I take it he is Dead Game.

I know when you see a hard mouth dog at work, its an incredible sight. It may even scare you to think a creature can cause so much destruction. But when you see a dead game scratch, I can almost guarantee you will be overwhelmed with emotion. That hard mouth that seemed so spectacular, so invincible, isn't even half as amazing anymore. At least thats how I felt when I saw my first DG bulldog...

Gameness is the LAST thing seen in a match!

  12. Game should ALWAYS be number one on ANY list when it comes to the hounds. A hard mouth is great, but useless on a quitter. That's a fact.

well i like a good dog if u like to bet a destroyer with mouth is awsome and will kill the dead gamest hog ever with ease but i also like a good game dog that just went threw the ringer and never showed a bad sign :) its all prefrence ppl get and bred the way they want to makes the game what it is

Pups just a few weeks after teething will tend to get a soft mouth , but with a little time, the mouth will come back. And with some lines of dogs, the mouth will get harder and harder until they top out at 3 or 4 years old.

Thanks. I've heard some dogs can be late bloomers when it comes to really packing the power, but I haven't had any experience with it.

I think people who breed JUST for mouth should quit in the dog game. DO NOT add a cur to your line even if it has a hard mouth, its not worth it in the long run. You can find dogs that have a hard mouth and is very game. Eli lines are known to be game with hard mouth look into them if you want hard mouths.
