Interesting Opinion on Wind/Stamina from an Old Timer

Talked to an old timer today, a guy I haven't seen since I was 17 years old, he is an old family friend and has been in dogs for a long time. We got talking over a few beers and conversation turned to keeps and conditioning, and dogs wind/stamina in general.

He mentioned something I'd never thought about before and it kinda seems logical and makes sense to me, I just wanted to see what some of you other dogmen thought about the notion.

Basically, he was saying dogs that growl and bark when in a hunt (hogs), generally speaking have worse wind/stamina then dogs that stay quiet while they work. Now obviously theres a lot of variables, but the way he explained it was:

You take 2 identical dogs in every single way shape and form. Put them in a hunt that follows the identical path, 1 of the dogs remains quiet the entire hunt while he works, the other barks, growls etc.

The dog who stays quiet lasts longer, and will show greater strength and intensity through the fight, because a quiet dog finds it easier to regulate his breathing and intake oxygen to feed his muscles. Whereas a dog that barks, growls etc... is making his breathing more erratic by doing so.

Opinions on the matter? It might be a well known fact, but its something I've never heard of before and being no expert myself, thought I'd see what ya'll thought.

all my dogs are quiet and they can work for days!
not sure if its because of this reason but it does make sense.

Thats gameness right there rather than wind/stamina i would say, simply the one that is growling/barking is on its way to quit,a dog will start to blow hard and get very stressed even if not under that much pressure when its curring out so yeah i agree

i have known dogs that whine at the start but settle down and they sometimes have good wind and sometimes don't.

I'm inclined to agree with alabama and peppa to some extent, but I've also seen dogs that will growl and bark from the outset, right through to the end, win or lose.

I agree peppa and sunbeam but read the origianl post again you both goin on about something thats different to what hes saying....the dog that stays quit lasts longer,to me well yeah because the squeler on his way out, course there exceptions but yeah they run hot and blow quicker because they panicking and under stress

Thats exactly what I'm trying to get at, and just for clarification, I'm definitely not talking about squealers. I mean aggressive growlers/barkers, not submissive, squealing or whimpering. Dogs that growl on the hold or bark if they are in a hold and cant get one, or growl and bark as they wrestle for position etc. peppa made a good point about frustration, what about excess aggression... could also be a sign of rage fighters, and another reason they blow their top faster.

Typical 20 - 30 min anger fighter generally speaking and in my experiences, never lasts long, compared to a dog that actually just loves to hunt and whilst aggressive is still in control.

20-30 anger fighter = rough cur no??

Which again is my point mate, your talking gameness not wind or stamina really....

Yeah I see your point, and it makes sense now you put it that way... coz mosta those dogs are curs, or scatterbred pieces of manure.

to me its a fine line between wind and gameness when it comes to winning or loseing the hunt, you can have the gamest dog in the world but if he runs hot hes in trouble and before people start jumping on me didnt mayfeild say he beat better hogs though connditioning

Yeah but if you have the best winded/highest stamina dog in the world, conditioned by the bestest there is.....but no gameness you watch that boy blow like an unconditioned fat house dog in no time

Thats exactly the kind of thought your previous statement provoked in my head, appreciate it. Makes more sense to me now, and while I still think what he said holds validity with relation to your elaboration - it makes more sense and has a greater application to real hunts when you look at it from your perspective rather than just applying it generally.

i was just commenting on the fact that a dog dosnt have to blow to be a cur
they will stop standing on all four mouth closed

thats why its called a cur

a true game dog will drag its self across on its belly barely breathing thats why its a game dog

condition has nothing to do with gameness :D

Yeah but it 100% does because without gameness condition means sweet f*ck all:)
