Why was the dog surrendered? What was the reason?

this is some of the worst advice i have seen...they have had the dog less than 48 hours.
the dog does NOT need to beed put down. it seems most here yell "PTS" at the sound of ANY type of problem. the dog needs to learn its place, adapt to its new surrounding. it needs structure.
take the growling - note that there was a high value item in the dogs area (the bone), for all the dog knew she was trying to take it away. this is not aggression- this is guarding. until he learns his place, and who you are, this behavior will continue.
the dog is essentially in its 3rd home in as much as 8 months (original, foster, now the OP) you need to give a dog time to decompress from the stress of changing surrounding and finding out "who is who".

to the OP- work w/ the NILIF, start crate training, take your dog to some behavioral classes ( if nothing else it helps the bond)

PTS as a blanket statement is for people who simply dont understand anything about canine bahavior.

SAY BUDDY READ THE NEWDAY THREAD

I say put it down to
no place for an unpredictable dog

you should get you a dog from that breeder you were talking about
and why in the hell is the dog sleeping in the bed with you put that mofo outside
and hes sitting on your lap with a bone HAHAHAHAAHAHAHAH

yall need a poodle not a pitbull

boy you better hope that dog dosnt bite the shit out of yall while your sleep
get a chain and a dog house and all yall can sleep out there in the dog house

let him get to dominant and he might have your girl bent over when you come in from work:D:eek:

I said I made a mistake by letting the dog in the bed and I acknowledged that. I guess according to some people on here there is no place for a dog in the home and it belongs locked in a kennel. From all the pics of pits cuddled up to other animals and kids on the couch and in the bed a lot of people here don't need to be owning them. Some of the rude comments remind we why a took a break from the forum. I have no problem taking advice and thats why I came on here. But I am no child and don't appreciate being talked down to. To everybody that is really trying to help thank you.

Thank you for the advice. I'm not going to give up on him yet and am hoping that he will adjust with some time and good training.

Ya know what, you're absolutely right. I clearly don't understand anything about canine behavior, so I'm just going to keep quiet and a allow you to handle this. I sincerely apologize for meddling in crap I know nothing about. I'm quite sure that a crate and NILIF will be quite effective in the hands of folks who do not understand setting proper boundaries in the first place. I'm done.

Looks like allot of good posting above.
My suggestions are the same. That pup needs to learn who is the boss. You need to make sure it knows or it will get out of control quickly. I would start socializing him with people and dogs. With this breed you cannot be the kind of person that babies or humanizes dogs. My dogs are yes like my kids but first they are dogs. Not little babies or humans. Give him time to adjust and then start some simple training with him.

That seems like the plan as of now thanks for the advice. One of my girlfriends best friends from college just graduated from vet school so were going to call her and get her opinion too.

I would think a man of your intelligence would add some insight into this thread to help the OP.

From my stand point, and dont take this the wrong way, but if this incident was not a big deal, then why ask for advice on the forum. Yes the owner has some experience with the breed, but a issue like this with a seasoned APBT owner, would not need such a help plea. So to avoid any serious accidents with a dog you only had for 48 hours with no serious attachment, would just be easier to start over with a pup. Its not that you made a mistake, its the type of mistakes your making. In my opinion, the mistakes that you made should have been rules 1,2,&3, baseline ground rules. Which means that this 8 month old pup may have more experience manipulating people (his 2 previous owners) then you have training problematic dogs. I could understand if it was a dog that you raised and then this problem happened, your attached and you know the history. But this is a rescue that has a virtually unknown 8 month history, are you prepared to spend alot of time and money on a dog that may potentially have to be put down or sent back to the rescue anyway. That is the reality of the situation, good luck.:)

you know what your right I should have thought my post through a little better

but they should have thought their selection through a little bit better

and Im just tired of these people getting these dogs without a clue on how to maintain one

so I tell you what you teach them your meathod but mine would consist of taking pups back to the shelter or putting it down myself

and I WOULD NOT getting one from someone that can tell me a little more about the dog
than it was a drop off because the owners moved and couldnt keep it
thats the main thing people tell animal shelters as a reason to drop off a problem dog

we have people here (on this site) asking alot of questions- some seem downright stupid, others not so much. atleast the OP has the sense to ask the question, maybe in hopes of getting some advice on which techniques can work w/ this new dog.
as far as rescue dogs go though-just because the dog is 8 months old (still a puppy really) doesnt mean its not workable. an 8 week old puppy is just as succeptable to this behavior. rescue dog does not always mean the dog is defective, esp in this day and age of people losing their homes and having to leave behind their animals

This is the big ? right now am I ready to spend alot of time in money on a dog that I dont really have an attachment to. Or do I take it back and let them no of the problem and get a pup. Thanks for the good advice. I think as of right now I'm going to give him a little more time and see what happens

Assumed? Sensitive? Me? Naw, I just know myself and how I tend to react to hypritical nonsense, like people making under-informed blanket statements about other peoples' under-informed blanket statements. So, before I start getting disrespectful and acting an ass, I just step off the bus. Bottom line, folks with the knowledge to deal with this situation wouldn't have to ask strangers on a board. If I have to choose between putting a down an iffy dog (throwing out warnings left and right on the forst day) that finds itself in the hands of iffy owners, or trusting them to follow one of the most time and commitment intensive systems out there,.......I know where I stand. Call me one blanket statement making SOB too, because I vote with the "put'emdown crowd today." And for me, it just ain't worth aguing about a dog I don't know a damned thing about. So like I said, more power to ya.

This might not be the case but aren't dogs suppose the go through intensive screening process before they are allowed to be adopted out? Even more so a pit-bull with the bad rap they have gotten. When I was a frequenter of these boards a few years ago people were very quick to send somebody to a shelter to get a dog. Now it seems like everyone is saying this is the place most likely to pick up a dog with issues.
