so i was thinkin bout goin to school to be a dog trainer,i figure all i wanna do all day is be around dogs anyways so i may as well make it a career!, im not sure what kind yet (prolly sumthin like shutzhund for the cop dogs & general public, cuz basic obedience is 1 in a 1000 (u can get it at petsmart), but theres not as many other "style" trainers)

but if i do it id wanna do it full throttle & make it a career and basically (in time!) open my own facility!
my question is how much do they make? as im going to need a job that is able to finance my own affairs, im not expecting to be a millionaire or nothin, but are they atleast sittin pretty?

Find a decoy/trainer in your area to mentor you. There are also schools and seminars to learn how to decoy (a.k.a. catch a flying malinois) for bite work dogs. Go visit some schutzhund/french ring/PSA clubs and ask about decoy training and maybe they'll let you wear a suit in time.

I think a decoy training school is probably more important at the moment. That way you can ensure it is something you are both interested and capable of doing. Inexperienced decoys can seriously injure a dog, so it is vital that you learn to do it properly. Get some exposure under your belt, and then you can slowly build up your reputation by offering your services to clubs or people looking to simply have their dog worked. Couple that with your business/communications plan and I'd say you would be good to go with the right amount of advertisement and getting your name out there.

Let me tell you I've researched these types of schools and they can be real expensive. I got with a schutzund club in my area and started training with them. The cost of joining a club is much cheaper than the price of school. But, the up side of going to school is that police departments pay good for a well trained dog. Most departments like duel purpose dogs for their money. I also raise Malinois and my puppy was finding narcotics at 9 weeks and biting the protection sleeve at 12 weeks. She got her first real bite at 7 months. I'm saying all of that to say this. Training is great and it has its ups and downs.

I am going to go to school for dog training also but when I do open my own business I wont be the same kind of training like Petsmart training. It will be a mixture of training methods. I have been training dogs unprofessionally since I was 12 which was when i got my first APBT. You should have other plans like me. I am going to take a vet tec course also to fall back on also in the long run I want to learn allot of things and breed game bred APBTs for work and show. There are many online schools you can look up just like I did.

Hope everything works out for you.

No. The best suggestion is to find a mentor and work under them. The dog training "schools" are nothing more than ways to take your money. 99% of them only allow pure postive training methods only and do not take into account that not every dog will work exceptionally well with pure positive.

If you are looking to make great money you have to relay on reputation and what you have done with your personal dogs. Or you could buy a franchise like sit means sit but if your not that good then you will not have repeat customers.
There is a lot of money with Schutzhund training but again you have to have accomplished sch dogs to make it. I know you can make some money as a decoy but then again you need to build a reputation.

My advise is do not waste your money on training schools for a degree it really means nothing, your reputation will mean more. Many of the big time dog trainers do not have a degree. What you need to do is put some years behind the dogs and get some accomplishments and find a mentor to help you. Some people really lack the coordination for dog training and the natural instinct. Make sure you have what it takes and work with a mentor. I do pretty well with my business but really it pays for my dog addiction :D I drop about 40,000 in the dogs and make a little more with than that with my business. My husband keeps thing rolling ;)

In my personal experience...don't try to make a living off of dog training. But, if you were to go to one, Tom Rose is the one I recommend.

I agree. You really need to LIVE dog training for many years before you are qualified to teach training to others. Schools don't mean anything except for some polish to many years of training and titling your own dogs of various breeds in various disciplines.
