When do I start Training?

I'm new to the dog training scene and I'm trying to gather as much vital and "proven to be effective" information on training as possible. I'm very interested in hand command training as well. What age does one start to train hand command to a Pit pup. My little pup Conan was born last week but through the information I gathered from various sites they state that it is much wiser for me to allow the pup to stay around his siblings for a minimum of 8 weeks prior to removing him so he can understand the concept of socializing with other dogs and humans.

They learn bite inhibition, along with socialization. I would not take a pup under 8 weeks from the momma.

Thanks for the clarification and confirmation Michele. Would hand commands be considered too advanced when I get the pup after 9 weeks?

 

Not at all. Also, if you end up doing flirtpole or springpole with the dog, wait until the dog is one year old.

 

I think I will stop after Conan can understand 3 different languages. flirtpole or springpole look almost as hard as teaching him Chinese Arithmetic :rolleyes:

Well like you say, "you are new to the game" and i commend you for trying to gain knowledge.
I say training should start as soon as you get your puppy. It gives the puppy a chance to make a true bond with you. Also, what type of training do you plan to do with your pup. (i find protection training to be a good area for the pitbull that obeys commands good.)

I know it was a joke, but I know of an APBT/AST service dog that knows all commands in 4 or 5 different languages.

 

It's fun for the dog, and also good exercise for them.

 

Training starts THE SECOND you get the dog, at 8 weeks there bain is like a sponge, get them going early and it will serve you in the long run

I started training mine as soon as I got them. With the pups I started their training as soon as their mother stopped nursing them.
