MANCHESTER, Ga. -- A warranted search of a Meriwether County residence turned up a disturbing find on Friday - dozens of emaciated, flea-infested pit bulls that authorities believe were being trained for dog-fighting.

Suspicion mounted one day before when a deputy on patrol responded to a call about a man walking a small pit bull down the road with a large chain hanging around its neck in Manchester, Ga.

The deputy arrived to find the man, later identified as 52-year-old Sherman Holt, trying to hide the dog from view.

The deputy soon found that the dog was emaciated with its ribs and backbone showing through the skin.

With that initial find and further investigations, the department was able to secure an arrest warrant and search warrant for Holt.

When they arrived at his home at 186 Chapel Hill Road in Manchester, investigators soon found that the dog was not alone.

mmediately upon entering, authorities found a pit bull chained to a treadmill being forced to walk. In the backyard they found 34 more pit bulls -- all, police said, in various stages of emaciation and flea ridden.

Many of the dogs were chained to car axles with logging chains.

A make shift kennel also housed two litters of puppies. Authorities said these, too, were covered in fleas.

Elsewhere in the yard, investigators found a large plastic drum filled with water and presumably used to force the dogs to tread water.

When the search was completed, authorities said they found other items also believed to be used in pit bull training and dog fighting.

Holt was taken to Meriwether County Jail on 25 counts of misdemeanor cruelty to animals, one count of dog fighting and 9 counts of felony aggravated cruelty to animals.

His bond was set at $112,500.

Several agencies, including the Meriwether County Animal Control, LaGrange Animal Control, Fayette County Animal Control and Macon-Bibb County Animal Control assisted in the investigation.

The agencies are also caring for the rescued animals.

maybe if he charge $2000.00 a pup he could've afford dog food and his bond. Walk At Night!

Just by looking at the pictures it's really hard to tell if most of 34 dogs were emaciated. The puppies looked healthy. That green water wasn't appealing, and I have no idea where the dog fighting charge came from.

  5. [IMG]well what do you know typical.., dogs look to be in terrible condition, malnutrition and yard is complete shit

Same old story another scum bag puppy peddling dog hoarder. Can't take care of himself but needs 30+ wormy starving dogs. People like this make us and are breed of dogs look very bad in the eye of the public. This is not the attention we need. Maybe they should chain him up for a while make him drink that green shit water while infested with fleas and roll around in his own shit.

Scratch Pattersons- You might want to reconsider your posts like this from now on. This is the second time you've posted some bullshit hinting towards racist remarks. Leave that racist shit alone, man. This isn't the place for it.

Dogs didn't look the best, I agree. But the only green water I saw in pics were in the swim tank. Maybe they should change it out more but that's not worth going to jail over IMO. He had a dirtier yard and skinnier dogs than I have but is that worth going to jail over? I'm not making excuses but damn the crowd on here sure has changed quite a bit. We have more petbull owning, jail screaming hippies than this site has probably ever had. I have the utmost respect for people who care for their animals and yard properly. But I'm not willing to throw everybody in jail who doesn't have my standard of care or cleanliness. And I completely agree with Vicki. Where in the heck do they get dog fighting charges? They showed one dog with minimal scaring on it's muzzle. Just plain stupid.

All because he was dragging chain? I guess that's illegal now too? SMH

I've seen worse. I only noticed one dog that was truly emaciated in the video. 35 years is extremely excessive for the crime. hell, you can murder a person and be out in 3 to 5 involuntary, premeditated 5 to 9. Seems a bit ridiculous to me.

I didn't see a video but same, I only saw one dog emaciated as well in the pics. Surely wouldn't see a dog looking like that here but shit, those are HIS dogs.

I have nothing against ''showing'' dogs other wise I would not be on this forum in the first place. But I do have a problem when people don't take any care for there dogs. A dog will give it his all for his master and a lot of game dogs have short life's do to the nature of the sport. The least the owner could do is have clean water, feed, pick up shit and general care for worms fleas ec. A mans dogs and yard says a lot about a person. Nice tidy clean yard and healthy dogs shows the owner actually cares and has a passion for the breed. Filthy shit covered yard and flea ridden wormy starving dogs tells me the owner doesn't give a rats ass about the dogs and is just in it to make a buck. This is the same old story over and over again. It is yards like this and irresponsible owners that don't know what they got on the end of there leash that are going to wreck it for everyone. I don't understand why people defend people like this are breed of dogs is getting band everywhere and issues like this in the media sure as hell don't help our cause. If the guys dogs looked healthy and his yard looked half decent I would be the first to stick up for him, But having dogs that look like that I could care less what he gets charged with. To all the dog men with a love for the sport and a love for the dogs my hats off to you and keep up the good work. Just my thoughts.

I take whatever I read about raids such as this with a pinch of salt. Almost always the media lies and exaggerates things. I can't ever remember seeing a western media report that says the dogs were well looked after, always it's the opposite.
Most raid happen first thing in the morning before most are awake and well before the average owner can tidy up his yard. So I wouldn't expect the dogs to have food still in their bowls and the dogs to have dumped overnight. The emaciated dog shown looks a disgrace but for all we know he might have just got the dog. I think its wrong to jump to conclusions based on a media story.

I hear what you are saying. But a person can only give the benefit of the doubt so many times then you start to paint all situations like this one with the same brush. I live in a real rough part of the city and I have been in yards like that and have dealt with dog owners with dogs that look like that and to tell you the truth some have sickened me, zero respect for life other than there own. Most have dogs just for the sake of having dogs. A lot are junkies and drunks who go on binges and don't feed the dogs for a week. Half of there dogs are stolen to begin with. Just bad situations all around. I have never been in a yards that looks like that and has dogs in that type of condition that I could make a excuse for the owner and that is the honest truth unfortunately. Some places like this and dogs of that kind of shape are caused by pure laziness. Others think its a good way to make money get any dog they can get or steal and 6 months later lose interest and then the dogs suffer big time. I am sure there has been many charged for animal abuse unrightfully so but there has been a hole lot more that deserve what they got. I wish I could see thing in a different lite but after seeing the same story over and over and witnessing places like this first hand there will be no tears shed by me for the accused.

He's had an official warning now. One more time and he'll be sitting in time out for a few. It's obvious he's the ignorant one. He'll slip up eventually I'm sure.

That water aint green.. It's the reflection from the trees.. Only seen 1 dog that looked bad, the media always makes it sound really bad. The dog was "forced" too walk on the mill.. If you read the story, they are trying everything to smear and blur the lines. Typical..
