How to choose a kennel?

Discussion in 'Breeder Discussion' started by Newbie2016, Jul 13, 2016.

  1. I am from Austria and a fancier. Currently I am looking for a original APBT. But I have no idea how to choose a good kennel (anywhere in Europe). A ROM stud is no guarantee for a good pup. Which Bloodline should I choose? How many breeders do have fake bloodlines and how to expose it? How many should I pay? Hot to get in touch with them? And so on and on and on...

What your doing now is asking everyone here to do your homework for you. There are so many kennels and so many lines of these dogs and everyone is going to give you a different opinion. Go to some shows. Meet some folks, Read until your cross eyed. Our search button is in the top right corner of the screen. Tons of kennels, dogs, people who breed them are talked about every day here. Find one you like and pursue. That's what I meant by research.

First what type do you want as they are many types that run under the title apbt so don't be fooled Asking as you have is the first step of many. Clearly since U r asking U may not have bought one that's Good. There are plenty in Ur area is that is where you want to shop. But when you do but Do so after serious seeking and time and in PERSON. If in no rush get to know the owner/owners really get to know them as deep as you can as well as the dogs Ur dog/dogs may come down from. Blood is very important as it will allow one to know more about their traits ways etc so Unless you want what ifs and maybes then I'd suggest as close to a family bred breeder as possible and one with 20 plus years in not 20 years of just breeding dogs lol unless you want such then go for it but knowing as much, hence why you are researching so we an know as much as possible. If you want show as in looks hen go to shows based on such and of not then surround yourself with those who go to other shows and focus on those who have a higher percentage in wins and Roms. Good Luck and keep them eyes n ears open and Question Everthing.

All bloodlines produce good & bad dogs, pick one and research the line. When choosing a kennel look for one that has consistently produced the type of dog your looking for. Price varies from €200-€1500 depending on individual breeders valuation. The only way to buy a good one is to buy a good adult, there can be no guarantees with pups.

Good post blue..I want to see winners , and I am not concerned with what blood it is.I would rather have stock from a family of winners.

  9. Thank you for the replys. This Sunday I will go to the Netherlands --> https://www.facebook.com/xtremeeventholland/

Currently I do have a Pit Bull from Germany and a AmStaff from Germany. The AmStaff is a really good family dog. Super friendly. But he was several times ill and he has some problems with his spine. And the Pit... not worth talking about. It was all my fault. I took the dog to quick. Next time I want to do things better and get in touch with the right people.

I am searching for a real badass or game or tough or whatever Pit Bull (I think you know what I am talking about) to do some real "schutzhund" - a real game Pit Bull will do almost everthing better as any other breed. I alway rad and hear: "There are some good breeders in europe" - so, I must be stupid and blind. 15 years ago I had a real Pit. Great dog with hard mouth and he was tough as nails. Unfortunately I had to sell him. I was too young and dumb to see how much worth he was. Anyway...

I do love the Colby Dogs. Love the history behind. And I really love how they look, at least on the pictures I have seen. For the next year I will travel to the USA (Roadtrip from East to West). Some advice how a European Newbie like I am get in touch with Pete or any other family member of the Colbys? Maybe Pete allows me to meet him and to visit his yard (is yard the correct word?)

Call The Colbys as you will see a big part of what is the apbt is made by Colby bloodlines enjoy as it will be an adventure I am sure

  11. What do you mean with "call the colbys"? Just pick up the phone and call him? I found Louis No. (R.I.P) on the yellow pages. But I dont think it would be a good idea to call this number... I´m pretty sure they get a lot of calls every day. I dont want to annoy this great man. Do you know what I mean?

Check the Colbys page They still are producing. Calling the breeder always will help you go farther with seeking what you are after if they can help I think If I were to be in the market and were considering adding such blood they'd be the ones I call. I do not know the members of the Colby family as I have never met them and Ibdont consider phone calls n emails or texts as in KNOWING one others you will see Do. Their number/numbers are out there Good luck brother.

Why not get yourself one of them police man biting dogs instead of an APBT which has been bred not to bite humans. As for starting your search I would suggest to first find what dog/family then go from there. Plenty of info in the "History" section then you can narrow down on the exact kennel when you have a better idea. Seems like you should pump the breaks and take your time to get what you want as you are not sure at the moment.

  14. get out there and go visit shows people ect, dont be in a hurry to buy something, some 1 once said to me to find a good dog you 1st need to find a good person...wise words me thinks

  15. You are right, the APBT has not been bred to bite humans like the Rottweiler or the German Shepard is bred for. But your point does not matter. A real APBT wants to please his owner, is very intelligent, fast (a lot of faster than a Rottweiler) and healthy. He has very good biting power and is tough as nails. During the “Schutzhund” education you learn a Rottweiler or a German Shepard stops about 80% - 90% of human attacks. A game bred American Pit Bull Terrier stops almost 100%. He won’t stop fighting and defending his family. Even he got shot. He will defend his Family until death. I have no idea why I should get myself a “police man biting dog”.

I have read the Book from Colby “American Pit Bull Terrier- History of Fighting Dog Series”. Great book by the way. In his book he mentioned the ability as a defense dog. He tells a story of a woman who got rubbed several times. The thieves stole petrol and chicken. She bought a Pit Bull to protect her yard and her stuff and the dog did it absolutely great, Joseph said. He talks about the APBT nature to protect his family. I love these dogs because they do almost everything great. Sure, in a Pit they are phenomenal and they are animal aggressiv, not human aggressiv... bla bla bla. Call me a fool, but I do believe the words of Joseph L. Colby. He mentioned a few times the quality as a defense dog and in other areas.

You are absolutely right. I have to get out there and I have to slow down. I am looking forward to this Sunday and the event in the Netherlands. Maybe I will find someone who knows someone who maybe knows the Colbys. And maybe I will meet them next year. Would be awesome!! I would love to shake his hand and talk to him.

I ask for opinions, but your opinions dont matter....... Bla bla bla...Seems your mind is made up, yet you really dont know other than from books, which is ok to a point.. Unless you have broken a dog off a hog, you really dont know...

Ah don't apologize we got thick skin around here bud. So what exactly attacks are you trying to stop? Like robbery at your house or on the street? Are you unable to own guns where you live? I think one can rely upon a dog to alert you to a problem by barking etc but to train the APBT to act as a police dog would I just don't see the point and very likely someone whom you don't intend to be the target may very well become just that.

  20. Only thing I can tell you besides the great advice that as already been given here is to be careful, especially in your part of the world because someone will sell you a APBT but it might not be the one you looking for if that makes sense. Once you do narrow it down to a bloodline, find a kennel that specialize in them and visit them a couple of times, get to know the owner etc, even once that is done narrow it down even more to the two dogs you want a pup from and see if they have the traits you desire
