Who keeps an GB dog as a housepet

Discussion in 'Dog Discussion' started by Coachmcewan, Jul 15, 2011.

  1. I would like to get a new pitbull, but my kids want to keep it as a house pet.
Does anybody keep a gamebred dog as a house pet?

Do any particular bloodlines tend to make better house dogs?
If so any suggestions of kennels or breeders?

I want the dog to keep the integrity and heritage of the true APBT in size, look, and personality. (no American, bully or amstaff)

Feel free to post pics of personal GB house dogs!
Am I crazy and stupid for thinking about this?

    Thanks For the info

if you get a true game dog they will do fine in the house i got a pure Cottingham female that lives in my house as a pet but during the day i tie her out they need exercise so if you can get your dog exercise during the day or tie it out on a chain run it will be a good house pet JMO

She is a great watch dog, she barks at everything going on out front, very well behaved in the house, I just have to keep her separate or a extremely close eye on her when my female husky mix is around, but she can be with my male Pit Bull mix without any problems, of course always supervised time though. When no one is home she is in her crate and if were all busy with something and can't provide 100% supervision with the other dogs she can go out on her chain spot too.

my dog has never had an accident inside, he's 16 months now. the only thing wrong with him is that he loves to eat socks, so as long as we hide those, we're good.

with that being said, they need a shit ton of exercise to keep them happy ( and your furniture in good shape )

dont think that just because its a housedog that its easier to handle though. I've got aan indoor crate, garage welded wire kennel, and outdoor cable run for playtime, all for one damn dog. it's like having an 8 year old with ADD.

Never could keep mine in the house past 14-16 months, but me and ole lady have always kept a choice pup in the house, and I definately would say certain families make better pets, they call them curs on here I think, the people I know that have house GB dog are very patient people and are essentially raising a 4 year old child the entire life of the dog .... lmao.. whatever floats your boat I guess........

Done it for years. Bloodline shouldn't matter, socialization is what's most important.

The breeding does matter. Bloodline, I am not to sure about. "Since I am not familiar with every line of the different bloodlines out there." I am sure there are members on here that have owned almost every bloodline out there. Maybe they can chime in.
All I have ever owned have been GB dogs for the most part. And all my dogs have been pet/companions to some degree. And all the bulldogs I have ever owned have been extremely stable mentally. Except for (1) nut job female my father owned back in the late 70's "1/2 Storms x 1/2 unknown BYB"
I have found that if the temperament of the first two generations is sound, the odds are highly in your favor.
I have personally seen a litter where the sire was a man eater, and 3/4 of the litter was unstable.
Socialization works great as long as there is not a screw loose already. But as far as the bulldogs I have owned, and this is the truth, I have never even heard one of them even growl, much less be HA.
FB, I disagree with your statement. I have raised 5 kids around bulldogs. And never once was there even a sign of a problem. In fact they lived for the times the kids would go out back to give them attention! Other than Labs, I find a well bred APBT to still be the most stable breed of dog out there.
Now I have owned OFRN dogs in the past, but.
Some of the resent OFRN dogs I have seen lately "especially the tight Wilder stuff", are a little sketchy.
But then again, they wouldn't even be considered GB anymore. "My opinion only!"

never had a problem with mine in the house.
it is just more responsibility. you cant get complacent with the handling with them. you have to keep in the back of your mind that you still have a BULLDOG.. meaning that just becasue it is nice in the house, its not always going to be just as nice and understandable out side the house especially around other dogs it doesnt know and maybe other people. you cant let it run arround in the front yard like other breeds. TETHERING is the key whether chain or heavy duty cable tie outs not the petsmart tie outs either. Heavy duty welded wire kennels is also a must and it costs more money and they should always be put in there when you leave the house. there is just more things to worry about when it comes to this breed than just about any other breed out there with some exceptions....As far as bloodlines they all have bulldog blood in them and those who say that this line is calmer than the rest just had a calm dog from that line and labled the whole line as that and i would say that is false labeling.. what ever bloodline you choose just recognise what you have and be responsible with them... good luck from my experience they make great house dogs, but like i said just more responsibility
    for the owner thats all....

if you have kids it would be good to raise the puppy up with the kids and just teach them not to be crazy and rough house with the pup.. you dont want the young pup to think that the kids = rough play.... And that would be for you also and your wife and friends. I dont even play tug of war with the dog becasue i dont want the dog to = me myself as rough play becasue i will put him in his place.... HOW OLD ARE THE KIDS??... I Dont have personal experiance with raising these dogs with kids have heard both sides of the story as well as everyone else though. if your kids though are of age were they can understand rules and respect things then it should be no problem...

why would you say Sorrrels is better of a line than the rest? i couldnt say any bloodline is better to raised in the house than any other myself.. like AGK said bloodline shouldnt matter.

Looks like you got some great replies already. I would add that I don't trust any dog 100% with my kids especially younger children around eye level. They are, after all, animals, and can't reason. I don't have strictly GB dogs but do have some OFRN. And 2 of which I would never trust with kids. One is okay with older kids but not toddlers or babies.
