"5th April 2010 10:44 EST WikiLeaks has released a classified US military video depicting the indiscriminate slaying of over a dozen people in the Iraqi suburb of New Baghdad -- including two Reuters news staff.

Reuters has been trying to obtain the video through the Freedom of Information Act, without success since the time of the attack. The video, shot from an Apache helicopter gun-site, clearly shows the unprovoked slaying of a wounded Reuters employee and his rescuers. Two young children involved in the rescue were also seriously wounded.

The military did not reveal how the Reuters staff were killed, and stated that they did not know how the children were injured.

After demands by Reuters, the incident was investigated and the U.S. military concluded that the actions of the soldiers were in accordance with the law of armed conflict and its own "Rules of Engagement".

Consequently, WikiLeaks has released the classified Rules of Engagement for 2006, 2007 and 2008, revealing these rules before, during, and after the killings.

WikiLeaks has released both the original 38 minutes video and a shorter version with an initial analysis. Subtitles have been added to both versions from the radio transmissions.

WikiLeaks obtained this video as well as supporting documents from a number of military whistleblowers. WikiLeaks goes to great lengths to verify the authenticity of the information it receives. We have analyzed the information about this incident from a variety of source material. We have spoken to witnesses and journalists directly involved in the incident.

WikiLeaks wants to ensure that all the leaked information it receives gets the attention it deserves. In this particular case, some of the people killed were journalists that were simply doing their jobs: putting their lives at risk in order to report on war. Iraq is a very dangerous place for journalists: from 2003- 2009, 139 journalists were killed while doing their work."

You just wait. The shit hasn't even begun to hit the fan on this one yet. That showed some serious lack of conscience.

hold on....on that video.....all i could see was a long dark shape slung over a shoulder....it can be thought of as a weapon...and if there was shots being fired at his gunship.....the reporter camera man...if he was so good as had been said....should have known to get the fuck out of there...a gunship aint guna sit there n take a volley of shots from insurgents.it looks to me like both the pilot and those on the ground made mistakes....and lets be honest....if your in that gunship n some fucker has something that even smells of an rpg....you aint guna wait to be fired upon....its a war......not peace keeping....

Every war has collateral damage. The guy kneeling down behind the wall, with what did looked like an RPG (was probally really a camera but it did look like one to me too) I would have fired first you won't get a second chance in a chopper. It was most likely a mistake, but this isn't a conventional war, it's urban combat and they did have permission from higher ups to enguage. Unemployment just went down:D and peppa's right, this is war not peace keeping. I do however feel they should not be allowed to chatter like that on the radios, it's unprofessional and we are, after all, a civilized society or so they tell me.....

You want to know something. My little brother is over there. The disgusting, unconscionable, despicable and dishonerable actions of trigger-happy assholes who WERE NOT CONFUSED BUT JUST LOOKING TO KILL ANYBODY puts my brother's life in more danger and the success of the mission he has undertaken in doubt.

You can make all the stupid-assed excuses for what you see with your own eyes and hear with your own ears. You cannot win hearts, minds or wars when you stand behind ass-clowns like that.

So, unless you, or someone you love is in a position to be placed in extra harm when that video makes its rounds around the world, kindly keep your gung-ho dumbshit to yourself. I completely respect your right to spout thoughtless shit out of your mouth, however, it does get a little sickening watching folks who should be able to think beyond kindergarten level not even try to understand what things mean in the big picture and how crap like that affects us all in the long-term.

Thanks. As soon as I hear from my brother, I'm sure he'll thank you too.

I ment no disrespect if your refering to my comment. I have 2 family members one in Iraq and one in Afganastan both of whom I'm close to aswell as a few friends, my point was, they made a judgment call and had the approval to enguage, they followed their orders. However I did make the comment about the unprofessionalism of the chatter, and I still stand by it. The unemployment part was maybe a bit much but I tend to have a sence of humor about bad situations, it makes them more palleable. Personally, I would have never sent troops to either place to begin with, I would have just sent bombers........

I think it's time we bring our troops home. We need to let these people sort out their differences among themselves.

When we use terms like Collateral Damage it desensitizes and deflect our thoughts to the fact that real human beings are being murdered. Elders, babies, women, ETC.

And I really doubt there was a helicopter hovering around that area. That was an unmanned drone, with someone probably controlling it from the mid-west somewhere. War is now officially a video game.

And how can you have a war against a tactic? Isn't terrorism a tactic, a tactic that authority and the most desperate use to instill fear to gain authority?
That's like having a war against.... trench warfare. Because at the "end they're not going to bring in the head of all terrorist" or trench warfare for that matter.

In the above video you can't tell what was in their hands, so how could anyone make that judgement? Let alone someone with the power to take another humans life. And children at that! They may have not known the children were in the van, but damn when they found out there were children there they had no heart.

The unearned privilege we have in this country only blinds us to reality. Remember there is a whole world out there and we're on 5% of it.

I Can't believe you guys have the nerves to sit here on this forum and criticize our American troops when you guys have no fucking( excuse my language) idea what goes on over there and base your opinions on shit the media reports or videos like this. I hear all you people talk about how bad the media makes our breed look but them you guys listen and believe all the bullshit they feed you guys about the Iraqi war. Know what your talking about before you open your mouths! Semper Fidelis!

  18. I really didn't mean it towards anyone. Just a bit bothered by some of the statements made. We don't know the whole story behind the video and there we go criticizing. You would all be surprised of what theses people are capable of in order to kill Americans.

They can drag our aid workers and soliders thru their streets and behead them publicly and barbaricly amoung other grotest acts of violence agince us and no one says anything yet some people get shot up and everybodys in an uproar, yes some civilians got shot up due to a mistake and everybody gets there panties in a bunch. It's war plain and simple we aint over their to hold people hands, and we don't always know exactly who the enemy is anymore, we have never fought a war like the one we are fighting now they even said in the video that they followed the rules of engagment. We fight by rules agince a bunch of people who don't abide by any rules and we are the bad guys, yeah fucking right. They thought they saw something and they acted accorrdingly for what they thought they saw, accidents happen. Casulties happen in any war it's just a fact of life. It's unfortunate but it happens, it's not like our enemies are in a uniform that tells us they are the enemy. We are their to assert authority untill the iraqi military can handle their own buisness, untill then casulties of war are just a fact of life, the soldiers did help those kids by the way, didnt you see them running with them to try and help them? their orders were to leave them with the iraqi forces and in the service you do what your told without questioning authority........

And they wern't unmaned drones they were apache helicopters.......

I think they should be punished for the chatter going on while doing the shooting, their was no honor or character in that and they should be repremanded for it but that guy looked real suspicious behind the wall with what really did look like the firing end of an RPG. You don't wait till they shoot you to react, you won't get the chance once they pull the trigger on one of those. you would have just had dead americans, and yes they need to pull them out of both iraq and afganistan and let them people deal with their own problems, why do we have to police the reat of the world and then get shit when we make a mistake....... I dont think we should be in either place, hell they can kill each other faster than we can anyways.......
