After months of deliberating, the Aberdeen Board of Alderman voted unanimously at Tuesday's meeting to approve an expenditure of $4,000 to build a pit bull holding facility at the Aberdeen Animal Shelter.
The board approved the motion after a request by Aberdeen Mayor Jim Ballard.
Ballard also asked the board to consider the city's current pit bull ordinance to make it more enforceable.
"We have a pit bull ordinance in place," Ballard said. "I suggest we keep the existing ordinance but amend it and tighten up some of the areas in it. We also need to eliminate some of the areas that are not enforceable such as the section stating a pit bull must be registered with the city before it is transported across the city limits."
The board will take up the issue again at the November 17 meeting.
