Okay, I'm new to this breed, and am actively looking for my first dog, but don't have one yet. I am looking for a dog who will be good in obedience and agility, as well as be athletic enough to follow along when I go trail riding--it's not unusual for us to cover 20 miles a day of fairly tough country.

So as I've been reading everything I can about APBTs, obviously I've come across the 'bully types' that pretty much everyone on here despises. Now I am NOT trying to stir anything up, I'm trying to learn, so please be nice, but can anyone tell me what is the deal with this type of dog? Are they pit bulls still? We have two English bulldogs (who absolutely would keel over after about 1/2 a mile of following along on a trail ride) and these bully types look more like my English bulldogs than pit bulls.

I have figured out that Gotti and Razors Edge are 'bully' lines--are there any other lines that I would probably want to avoid for what I want a dog for?

Also, is blue not looked at in the best light just because of all the skin problems that can go with that color, or is there another reason as well? It seems to be a popular color with the 'bully types', and while I do have to admit that I like the looks of it (just the color, not the squat, fat dogs), I don't really care at all about color, I just want a good, smart, healthy dog with an amazing temperment--doesn't matter if it's green with purple spots if it has the right mind.

Again, I'm a little scared even asking this as it seems to be a hot topic, but I'm new to the breed, and a girl has to learn somehow.

Oh, and are these 'bully' types really bringing the kind of prices that some folks are asking for them?? I thought that English bulldogs were pricey, but these bully types are crazy expensive!

Now the Humane Society of the United States faces three federal lawsuits. We've told you about the widower Norman Pang's legal complaint against HSUS and some of its “raid team” members following a raid on Pang's Hawaii property. And the Ringling circus filed a federal racketeering lawsuit against HSUS and other groups in February following a judge's ruling that the animal rights group engaged in a pay-to-play scheme involving a witness.

Now HSUS is among the defendands in a $5 million lawsuit related to last year's illegal raid of South Dakota dog breeder Dan Christensen. He filed the suit against HSUS, the Second Chance Rescue Center, and officials in Turner County, according to KELO-TV.

HSUS, with now-former employee Scotlund Haisley, assisted the Second Chance Rescue in raiding Christensen’s property last September, seizing 173 dogs that they alleged were being mistreated. But a judge ruled in January that the search warrant used in the raid was wrongfully obtained and that the animal control officer “intentionally misled the issuing court by omitting material information in her affidavits and supplemental testimony.” (The judge found that “the warrants were largely executed by agents from the Humane Society of the United States” and two animal control officers.)
All of the charges against Christensen were dropped. And in May a judge ordered dogs illegally seized by HSUS and Second Chance to be returned to Christensen, their rightful owner. In the meantime, 28 dogs had died under the care of Second Chance Rescue and others had become sick while in the organization's care. And there stil isn't any evidence (other than HSUS's sensationalized media quotes) that the animals were anything but well-cared-for.

Has HSUS finally gotten itself stuck in a legal quagmire that it can’t get out of? Will its 30-plus lawyers be focused on diffusing yet another scandal, or will HSUS spend even more of its donors' money on outside counsel? Time will tell.
Posted on 09/08/2010 at 04:50 PM by the HumaneWatch Team
Has anyone ever heard of these...

So I've seen a lot of these little dogs around here, but they are always nothing more than a child's companion. However, recently I'm told that these dogs are big game hunting dogs and are used to hunt bears and deer. I always thought that that was the Akita Inu. Has anyone ever heard of these little dogs being used in big game hunts successfully, especially on bears? I don't think a 15-20 # dog would be sufficient enough to bring down a bear. You'd probably need a big pack of them to just run one off let alone bring one down. I always thought these little guys are used on small game.
