Was wondering if anyone does IWPA weight pulling? And if so, does anyone use the traditional method of training and getting your dog to pull? By this I mean, does anyone drive your dog from behind, instead of screaming and baiting in front of your dog? Just wondering as this is how I trained Bam (my APBT) to pull, I stand behind him and NO ONE stands in front of his screaming for him to come, he pulls on his own. And he has his WDX title. Just wondering.

ok..I hope you are just trying to learn. Baiting alot of times is not allowed.. and I dont see where standing infront of your dog and encouraging him is screaming..
but congrats on your dogs titles..

I didnt mean it was screaming, just notice a lot of times people yell to their dogs and such (around here anyways, lots of peole scream/yell to their dogs to encourage them to pull more). I know in IWPA you are allowed to drive from behind, and I am not just trying to learn, I trained Bam how to do this. hehehe I dont stand in front of my dog waiving a treat or toy for him to come or calling his name, as he knows when I say pull he pulls, n I dont have to say anything else.
and thank you.
I was jsut wondering if anyone else uses this method, as around here I have not seen anyone else do this yet. Also wondering if anyone else does IWPA, or if everyone does ADBA type "weight pulling"

Nice dogs Brayden, great titles.
I am currently "trying" to train my girl Candi for weight pull. I know there is only so much you can do and the rest is up to them, she like it and does well but she not doing as well as i know she can. If she put as mush will power in pulling as she does chasing a cat, she would probably be a world champion..lol.
What advice could anyone give me on getting her to try harder. She does well now. She is pulling the cart (275lbs.) but when i put a little more weight on it she pulls a little bit then sits a looks at me like i've lost my mind or something..lol. I mean, i know she like it cause when i put her harness on she gets real happy and start barking and pulls the cart around like she won some great prize. I guess my question is, how can i really get her going when i put the weight on the cart?
Thanks.

Dont MAKE her pull more than she wants to, that will only make her not want to and she wont like it. How old is she and how long have you been training her? Also may I ask what type of pulling harness you are using (such as where you got it and what type of material is used)? If you are baiting her (in front of you) get something she REALLY likes, like if she is food motivated get her fav. treat and put it in front of her. If she is toy motivated get her fav. toy out. But again dont push her, she will only pull as much as she can/wants to. Give her time. She wont just automatically pull 2,000lbs lol.

I got her harness from "Harnesses by Carol". She does a lot of harnesses for the IWPA. the harness Candi has is the one featured onthe chocolate pitbull with chain around it neck. (first pic and the one under it)..... http://www.harnessesbycarol.com/htmlcopy/Sample%20Harness%20photos.htm
I don't force her to pull cause i really want her to enjoy this. We haven't been training very long so I know its going to take time. She has been dragging around a tire with the harness since she was 9 months old to get her use to the harness. She a little over a year now and has only been carrying the cart for about three weeks.
Oh, just to clear it up a little, the only weight i am adding is my daughter and my neighbors son ( they both weigh 76 lbs.) thats about 150 lbs.

thats good, just give her time. Try and get some bricks or dog food bags so that you can add some more weights (more accurate to the sanctioned weight pulls also). hahaha

Brayden, where in PA are you at? We are in DE, we pull UKC, ADBA, APA, and we used to pull alot of IWPA, got away from them, but I think we are going to do one this winter in VA. There are alot of people that drive their dogs, Darryl Spauding for one, he always drives Chevy. Getting in front of them isn't baiting, and getting loud with them when the weight gets really heavy is just a means of keeping them concentrating on the task. The only organization that allows baiting is ADBA. Most dogs once they are trained are programmed.

near Lancaster. I havent been to a lot of pulls in a while since I have been working on conformation and trying to find a bitch to breed Bam to. But ya. I will be starting up again with my bouvier when she is a year old, so not for another 5 months.
