San Francisco, CA -- Vacaville police said today the Solano County district attorney's office will investigate the fatal shooting of a pit bull by an off-duty sheriff's deputy on Tuesday evening.

Lt. Craig Rossiter said police will not identify the deputy or the owner of the dog because the case was referred to the district attorney's office "to see if charges will be filed against the shooter or the dog's owner for leash law violations.''

He said the incident happened at 7:25 p.m. on Fox Hound Court in Vacaville.

Rossiter said the off-duty deputy was not arrested. He would not say whether the deputy is a member of the Solano County Sheriff's Office.

Solano County sheriff's Deputy Daryl Snedeker said he would not identify the deputy because the incident involves "a personnel issue'' and it is a Vacaville police investigation.

Rossiter said the deputy and his wife were walking their dogs on leashes when a pit bull attacked the dogs. The deputy tried to separate the dogs and was bitten three times, Rossiter said. The deputy got the dogs apart with help from a neighbor.

"Moments later he shot the pit bull several times,'' Rossiter said. The dog died at the scene.

Rossiter said there are a "variety of stories'' about what happened.

He said he is not aware of any previous complaints involving the pit bull.

If witnesses say different, the off-duty cop should pay for his actions! You don't shot after, you already handled the situation.
