I'm at a loss for words. maybe you should try a different vet.

My Rat Terrier was doing that same thing and I thought it was mites. The vet gave me some drops called MalOtic and it cleared up in two days. It' a yeast associated bacteria. I would try it.

Yeah Never Heard Of That Before! Seek New Vet

Yes, my dog had the same problem. It is a yeast infection. Is your dog's ear cropped? Go to the pet store and get something for ear yeast infections. Once I used the medication for a week or two (?), it was all gone. Do not hope for it to disappear. My dog had it for two years (I thought it was a bad case of wax) before I asked the Vet (on a routine visit). Wax is deep yellow. Yeast infection is dark brown.

PLEASE, before you put anything new into its ears, please seek another professional opinion. A LOT of damage can be done internally by a misdiagnose, and that isn't fair to your pit.
I could tell you I think it's this or that, but that isn't really being fair to your dog. I too, recommend=seek another opinion.

Yes..dont use over the counter medications if you are unsure of what the problem is. Try a different vet..maybe your vet can recommend a vet who specializes in older dogs or ear problems...

ear cleaners found in pet shops can contain alcholol and other dyes, etc that can make ears worse if they already are infected or itchy..
