Police investigating possible drug connection in assault
OAKLAND — A man was shot to death early Thursday in his East Oakland apartment and his pit bull wounded in what police suspect was a drug-related attack.
Police said robbery does not appear to be the motive in the killing of Michael James Williams, 31, who was shot just before 1 a.m. inside his apartment in the 3700 block of Allendale Avenue.
But a drug connection has not been ruled out because police found marijuana in different parts of the apartment, said homicide Sgt. Mark Dunakin, who is investigating the case with Sgt. Lou Cruz.
Police were summoned to the apartment by neighbors who heard gunshots.
Williams was found in the front room, shot several times. He was taken to Highland Hospital Oakland, where he died at 1:37 a.m.
Dunakin said a trail of blood from the apartment led to a nearby back yard where police found Williams' pet pit bull, which also had been shot. The dog was taken to a veterinarian for treatment.
Dunakin said the dog was possibly shot while attacking the gunman.
Police said Williams had lived at the apartment about a year.
He appeared to be running a T-shirt business from the apartment, Dunakin said, adding some T-shirts with movie poster reproductions printed on them were found on the premises.
The killing was Oakland's 70th homicide of the year and the third in three days. Last year at this time there were 72 homicides.
Police and Crime Stoppers of Oakland are offering up to $10,000 in reward money for information leading to the arrest of the killer. Anyone with information can call police at 238-3821 or Crime Stoppers at 238-6946.
