every KEEP depends on the dog. The same "keep" may not work on 2 different ones. Let's start putting suggestions down to show some of the different ways of proper conditioning of dogs in "keep". i.e. food intake, type of food and feeding schedule, stamina work, power work only some suggestions please as I will not let all my secrets out hahaha

Just put down some suggestions

hours of hand walking, nothing better for u or ur dog. feed i believe fish would be the best cause it is almost pure source of raw protien. and u could feed ur dog alot of fish without it gaining an ounce of fat. i would say to contact j. long about nutrition and his fish. this guy has definetly put his time in researching nutrients for dogs.

Im definately old school and there is no such thing as enough road work. I find mill work is important also but I have seen alot of people overheat a dog on the carpet mill and nearly lose a dog. If you can work your dog up to about 45 minutes on the carpet mill he is in damn good shape. I never liked a slat mill other than for building wind.

from talking to a couple of conditioners, it seems that u need all 3 hand walking, carpet mill, and slate mill kinda in a crosstraining type deal. but was told hand walking is the cheapest most reliable way to bring a dog in shape although it is 10x more work for the conditioner. the best slate mill i ever seen was the redriver curly mill those things are definetly a peice of art and worth every penny they ask for one.

Hand walking is honest work but it is time consuming and yes if you have a slat mill you can get a good 1 1/2 hours easy and you arent killing yourself either but the handler has to be in shape also and I guess that is why I like old fashioned honest road work. I will take a dog to the woods and I will keep a pocket full of rocks so when he or she starts to get bored I can throw rocks into the bushes and they will run looking for whatever it was.from talking to a couple of conditioners, it seems that u need all 3 hand walking, carpet mill, and slate mill kinda in a crosstraining type deal. but was told hand walking is the cheapest most reliable way to bring a dog in shape although it is 10x more work for the conditioner. the best slate mill i ever seen was the redriver curly mill those things are definetly a peice of art and worth every penny they ask for one.

I use alot of road work with and with out weights, an electric mill for 25-30 min. and springpole/ flirtpole work. All times depend on where I'm at with the dog. The Nutritional factor is High protein and not too much fat.

i used to have a e-mill and i would put the speed on about 5-6 mph (a nice swift jog) and i kept it next to the pc so i was right there while my dogs were on it rather than sitting in the garage bored watching the dog. but i started mine at 30 minutes and buildt up 10 minutes a week (3minutes every other day and stated them out monday at a full ten minutes more than the previous week) the one thing i cant stress enought is make sure u walk ur dog a good 30 minutes prior to any type of mill work to FULLY empty out or u will have a bunch bunch of stinky soft serve flying off the back of the mill. also once a week i would shake talc powerd over the mill just as a try lubricant for the belt. but i sold it too a friend as i wanted to look around for something i liked better so i sold it off for 50 bucks.

I have used just about everything in the past to condition my dogs but an ol timer taught me the best I've found.

Get you a tank or an old church baptismal and fill it with water. Make a harness for your dog (or buy one). Put loops on the front and back of the harness for lift points. Get u a 4x4 wooden post and tie short ropes coming down to attach to the harness so you can lift your dog. Lift the dog and place in the tank or baptismal. Your tank has to be deep enough for your dog to swim and your rope short enough to hold him in place.

Start out with a short workout and work your dog up to 30 minute swims at least 3 times a week. Feed Black Diamond to your dog while training him and you will produce a lean, mean, killing machine.

This method will create muscle mass on your dog like you have never seen before! What I like about it most is that you don't worry about overheating your dog and it works every muscle in his body.

Just my 2 cents worth.

Anyone here a fan of the Jenny???
Some flirtpole and some ball work are an easy way to build up some wind sprints into your dog, and the dogs love it....

I didn't mean to imply the water trough is the only way I work my dogs. I love a flirt pole and mills also have their place. Your workout has alot to do with what you are conditioning the dog for. (looks, hunting, etc). I use a flirt pole for my own enjoyment as well as the dogs conditioning. I just love being with my dogs.

I rollerblade at least 6 mi. each day. I also use a mini bike for sprints. Obviously we own a lot of acreage which makes this possible. We also use a flirt pole consistantly and swimming when the weather is extreme! We feed raw food during conditioning with some flax and vitamins e, a, and c, as well as corn oil. Dogs are worked 5 days on/ one day rest.

All those suggestions are great.... I work my dogs with a mixture of Flirt Pole, Hand Walk 3 to 6 hours, Swimming, some Spring pole on rest days..., And Mill Work (using Maximum Stress Keep by The Mill Maker). 7 weeks conditioning... 2 weeks Pre-conditioning.

With feeding... I give them a good Hi-Protein performance type dog food with around 29-30% Protein! and I ONLY give them NATURAL MADE supplements the HERBAL ones you can get on Body Health Shops! I tell you they work best on your dogs... quite expensive tho'. But it won't overdoze your dogs and won't intoxicate him either... I feed after 30mins of rest after work out. Well... that's all that I can safely spit out... the others are quite confidential. eheheh LOL!

FUCKING INCREDIBLE..........THANKS FOR THE INFO!ALL THIS IS A GUIDE IF THE SHOW IS AT 8PM SATURDAY

I never feed but once daily. This will keep your dog regular and insure he is empty at
show time. Next to getting the gut fat out of him, this is the most important: making
sure he is empty at show time. He will get hot an week if he has anything in his
stomach.

To make weight, I use broth without any solids. I strain chicken broth through cheese
cloth and save one pint. You can give this to him up to 3 hours before show time and it
will not do any harm.

And last, this is only a guide. You have to use common sense to apply with any success.
Example:

If the dog loses weight, feed more
If he gains weight, work more or feed less
if he is tired, rest him
if you are lazy and don’t work your dog, he won’t be in shape
if he is dry, add more broth
if his is too wet, decrease broth

Don’t push him too fast. Work according to schedule in pre-keep to prepare him for
work.

Not many people have the ability to condition

I once read an article that Earl Tudor wrote which said he doubted it there was 5 men
in the world that knew how to find a dog’s weight, get the gut fat out, and knew how to
condition him after he got the fat out.

I WILL GO ONE STEP FURTHER AND SAY:
If there are 3 today that know this and are not too LAZY to put him in shape, I do not
know them.

GOOD LUCK
IT’S HARD WORK AND TAKES A LOT OF TIME

I run my pup which is 3.5 months right now around the yard for about 30 min. and up and down two big hills during that time. I got some rope and made a loop on one end and put 2 ft. of water hose on the other and we play tug awar with that and we will run while she caries the hose and rope in her mouth and I have a hold of the other end. Sometimes she will run a whole lap around the yard and hillls on her back legs.Have a big yard out in the country. Then we will walk for a while then play chase the rabit (she jumps like one and moves back and forth like one) lol. Was wondering could you guys tell me when would be the right time to start useing a flirt pole and a spring pole and the best place to get them from.

But your right nutritional food should keep your dog happy with exercise every week should keep your dog in good shape, i guess it's a bit of a buzz to see a pitty work the tread mill too. but i don't need that. those things turn the dogs into killers. when my dog would kill food up in the woods, forest, bush anyway. It will bite anyone on it's premesis so just as well i dont train it to rip arses off. but thats my opinion.

people will believe anything..........even if the sky is falling. don't wear a helmet while crossing the street and tryin to bite you ear at the same time :p :D . conditioning your dog wont make him/her mean or killing machines. you lifting weight sure don't make you mean. it just pumps you adrenaline as well as with you dog. ps..........................A Good Workout Keeps The Blood Flowing Better ;)

i also use a combination of work outs. Since I moved from Georgia to Maryland I do more handwalking in the mountain trails. The uphill climbs work the wind and build muslce. I usually take a ruber ball and throw it up the hill and watch my dog chase up and back becuase the ball will roll back down hill. When i was in GA i used a small inexpensive kiddie pool to allow my dog to swim. It is a great endurance and muscle builder, without the worry of hurt your dogs pads or overheating issues. I feed fresh fish, fresh butchered beef, turkey or chicken with wild rice. the rice add fuel for explosive efforts.

where can i get a turntable mill

D.R KING
05-24-2005, 12:20 PM
Well this is what I do.

There is an area where alot of land is at where I live. First I let King warm up from running around in there for about 10 minutes. Theres alot of rabbits and rabbit holes there also so he's always "crouched" low and burstin sudden sprints trying to go after the rabbit, not only that this dog can run around the area over and over and over without stopping, for no reason, he loves to run, he'll run until he drops...lol head first.

Sometimes, I carry old sheets with me, tie them to monkey bars or something like that and let him get at that. He does a trick with me that when the sheet gets to short from him rippin it, I'll stand near the sheet and he'll run up my back and leap for it, good shots to, hardly ever misses. When he gets ahold he DOES NOT LET GO. Lol i laugh when he's making noises, sounds like he;s crying and growlin at the same time, even wheni hold his feet he still hangs on.

When thats done, its really time for the work out, THE BIKE RIDE. I dont have tredmill, and with my health right now i dont see a need for one. Last nite we were out for an hour doing laps around a big school. its takes 5 mintues for each lap i think. for 25 minutes he pulled and ran then it was a steady trot. If i was peddling , he was moving. We have a great time doin this, when kain is a little older, its gonna be his turn to work;)

My neighbors know king enjoys running with me, every time i get the bike he waggin and movin all over the place as if he's sayin "we're gonna go work today daddy again?"

Our dogs will push them selfs to the limit for us with a waggin tail, unlike people, they buckle down when the going gets tough, and from those work outs, King looks like this....
