I have a 7 month old am - staff and for the last 18 hours he has had VERY explosive dirreah and refuses to eat or drink. He has been very lathargic and just seems to sleep and then only get up when he has to go to the bathroom. I went to the store and bought pepto-bismo and tried to get him to drink some by injecting it with a turkey baster down his throught --but he was not very happy with that at all. I also tried to get him to drink fluids but he is refusing to.. The last thing he ate was a pigs ear - he hasnt had one in several months and he also had a piece of steak(cooked). Can anyone offer me any help or ideas or should I just bring him to the emergency vet?

He needs to go to the emergency vet NOW!

What is his vaccination history like?

Regardless, take him to the vet now & update us later. Hope all turns out well.

See a vet quickly, not much leadway when they are that young! Good chance from what you are describing (though vague) your pup has parvovirus.

If I were you I would get him into the fet within the hour. I had my first pit die of parvo with the same symptoms. I blew it off for like 3 days not knowing any better and when I finally got him into the vet he died there. If you catch it early enough you can save him but it could be costly. Pits have weak immune system and the catch stuff like this really easy. If they think that he is so far gone my advise is to have him put down and not to make him suffer until he goes on his own, you will regret it when its all over with.

get him to the vet

i would have a fecal run to rule out cocci... cocci cause those symptoms...

also make sure he doesn't dehydrate, drenching him would be a good thing.

easy the the pepto tho....

yea, sounds like parvo...everyone yells the vet, but they only want ur money. they tell u that this will help but when it doesnt they tell u that something else will help along wit it. The vet is the only place that is professionally trained to take care of these problems but they also are trained to make u pay as much as u will, just cuz. This is my belief and this is what i went through when i ended paying more than $3000 for medicines through the vet for a 6 month old pup i had that died from parvo in 2days. Some dogs will never be the same after parvo and some may have wonderful stories if they can survive it.

Try giving ur dog a fluid like Gatorade...it may help

I suppose you just have that "oh well, if it dies it dies" mentality? Well, not everyone does. We OWE it to these dogs to do whatever it takes to provide for them & keep them healthy. If that involved parting with a few bucks then so be it. If somone doesn't feel that way, well, then they need stuffed animals as pets.

$3000...hmm....

Well that sounds a bit steep. I took an American Bulldog into the vet with parvo, he stayed for two days and lost too much blood. I wouldn't have had it any other way though (with his death). At least he was at the vet getting cared for and getting some nutrients instead of in the back yard dehydrating to death... The bill was nothing compared to how he could have died.

And average parvo hospitalization stay (4-7 days) costs anywheres between $200-$350 including the intial exam & parvo test.

BUT for $40 dollars, one could have prevented this virus infecting his/her dog completely.

yep, our bill was $280. I wish we could have prevented it... boyfriend just brought it home and didn't even know what parvo virus is, and the poor pup had it bad. Luckily, I get to go home and tell him what I've learned all day at work while browsing Game-dog, and he's slowly but surely learning.

i gave the shots myself,, and syringe feed water to them , my pups were five weeks ,and the vet said that it was a 150.00 deposit each and then expenses,,he also said it's rare that pups this age gets it because of the mothers milk gives them immunanccy or it,,,if you do it yourself, it's a ton of work, but it's worth it if you care for your dog, the vet gave me Metoclopramide and Naxel but didn't lose any of my babies and dropped back by and thanked the vet for his help,

What's that saying, "Prevention is worth a pound of obscure"?.....

What usually costs yah are all the tests for the diagnostics, and personally, I don't think the vets are in it for the money. Simply, they do it, after ALL those years of schooling, because they love animals and want to help them. Plain and simple.(JMO)
When I first did tech work, I took almost a 50% cut in pay, (I left a really good paying job, that left a void in me).
