Farmington, NM -- It's difficult to miss the countless signs bearing the words, Pit bull puppies for sale, hanging from the rear windows of vehicles parked in lots that line Main Street in Farmington.

According to Farmington Animal Shelter Director Barbara Yarborough, pit bulls are currently the dog of choice for residents in the Four Corners area.

I think we're in our pit-bull phase right now, Yarborough said. It's a statement sometimes; Look at me, I have this pit bull.

Although Yarborough said she does not know why pit bulls have become the four-legged-friend of choice, she does believe that the dogs are being bred to sell rather than being the product of overpopulation.

I think they're selling right now, like it was several years ago with dalmations, she said.

Marc Alcon, 22, of Blanco, said that he sells pit bull puppies year-round. Alcon, who has run a kennel that raises these dogs for the past four years, said he believes pit bulls are here to stay.

I think people like them because of their reputation, he said, adding that he is frequently asked by families if pit bulls are child-friendly.

Alcon, who has nine pit bulls, said any dog is safe as long as it is properly trained.

Yarborough said she agrees, but that there is a looming sense of controversy surrounding the image of the pit bull.

There's been a lot of controversy in the last year or so, she said. (Pit bull) bites seem to be publicized more so than when grandma's poodle bites.

Despite the reputation that pit bulls have as guard dogs, Alcon said that many different types of people buy the dogs from him for various purposes.

While he has his fair share of customers who want a pit bull for protection, often breeders buy from him to raise their own pit bulls.

Alcon's puppies also sell very quickly.

In this litter, I had 20, and now I only have one left, he said.

The going rate for Alcon's puppies are $300 for a dog with registration papers, and $100 for dogs without papers.

The papers are important for the breeders, he said.

Ummm....people like him need to be stopped. And the media should know that people like us do not appreciate or like people like him.

like dalmations???? wtf?? and a phase?? and year round "factory"?? come on. you gotta be sh$$en me. ththing that stands out to me is that he said that about the "damation phase: from a few years ago. dalmations,,yeah, sure. fine. but these same bastards are, no doubt the same ones breeding for looks and "pretty colors". and straying all over the place to get a "whatever" dog. that can still be called a pit.

well lets see I bet we can all answer that,,,I can protect myself,me personally its the loyalty factor,, no matter what happens,,I don't even have to look I know there still here ready for anything or anybody, when i fall asleep on the couch and wake up and i drop my hand off the couch,I
know he's right there ,or up asleep on my legs but anyway,we all know why

i commented before,,but erased it. but this sh^t gets on my nerves. these are probably the same byb that are destoying the true apbt. for looks and color. sure, there was a dalmation phase,,and a rottie phase, and a dobie phase, and a chow phase. but the apbt are the dogs being crossed out and ruined by other mutt blood.

Soo glad someone posted this article... My parents live in Farmington and when my mom called me last time to tell me about the article I had a fit..lol She was thinking it showed them in a good light and was a bit surprised when I started bad mouthing the 22 year old "breeder".. I mean come on, $300 with papers and $100 without? OH MY GOODNESS it just lets you know that anyone with $$ can buy one of his dogs. I had to change the subject because I was getting more and more worked up..

Hmmm he's been breeding his dogs since he was 18? Well he must be a book of knowledge by now (sarcasm). ... And people wonder why serious pitbull people don't let their dogs go to just anyone...

Oh my gosh...20 puppies...i've really never heard of that there were 2 puppies in the litter my puppy came from but the female was only bred once..the breeder I bought from really wants to know the people before they can buy one of his dogs.
