I'm so sorry. These things do happen, although I will never understand why (b/c there is no understanding, it's just nature). I hate tragic stories like this. :(

Im so sorry too...

Probably started high with the tree and the intensity was high enough when it got close enough to the chain the current arced to the chain to travel to ground

My father raises beagles and he had something similar happen to his kennel a few years back. The only difference was that his dog survived but was really messed up. HE ended up putting the dog down b/c the dog was in bad shape health wise. But that a terrible thing and I wish him all the best. Hopefully it wasn't one of his best dogs but a loss is still a loss no matter what.
