When you reach 10 posts, you will get 160 something Anime & Animation avatars... after 50 posts, you get 49 Great Dogs, which will be added to later on. :)

click on user/cp you will see change avatar or something like that, click the toolbar and go down to the dogs

As of right now, only premium members are able to use custom avatars.

When the pedigree center comes out and we can afford a better server able to handle all of the files (space and bandwidth), regular members and premium members alike will have a lot more things to use. :)

What? I need to pay to have my dog's mug as my avatar? As a new member I don't get the opportunity to upload my own? Can at least post to the gallery? I tried one. See if you can find it. I did not. It is not the best of pictures. I took it with my picphone. Thanks for your reply!

Yup, pretty much sedalia. After a certain number of posts your new avatar options will be available, of famous dogs, instead of just generic anime pics.
