What would you do?
In my "hood" the locals tend to let thier dogs run loose and it drives my dogs crazy all day long. Some of the owners simply dont want the dogs anymore because they are no longer cute puppies and disown them, which makes controlling them even worse.
This evening I was coming home from a walk on the backroads with my bitch, Gix, who is EXTREMELY dog agressive, and of course one of the local mutts is headed straight for us. We are already in my front yard turning into the driveway and the stupid dog is still coming straight for her, so i pick Gix up, kicking and screaming, thinking that I was going to have to kick the dog away without Gix installing a window in its side, but luckily my neighbor was outside and got the other dog away long enough for me to get her on the chain. The owner finaly comes out from 2 houses down to get the dog and gives me some BS line about the real owner being locked up and how the dog was on a chain ... So I go back home and talk to my neighbor and not 2 minutes later, the damn dog is back and about 10 ft from the end of my bitches chainspace. I take it back again and the owner isn't even the least bit appolagetic or worried about the dog.
My question is, should I call the pound to get rid of these dogs, at the risk of putting myself on the ASPCA's map? Because, responsible or not, in my part of the city, they WILL keep tabs on me, like they have done so many of my pit owner-neighbors before.
Even an annonymous call would still bring them too close for comfort. So, like I said, what woiuld you do?

seems like the only thing you could do is have a sit down with your neighbors, tell them of your concerns letting them know that your other option would be reporting them for allowing there dog to run at large which means fines for them for "running at large", "public nuisance" and i'am sure a couple other. Maybe be that will put there dumb shit in check.

IMO you need to try and talk it out with them yourself, be polite at first and see where it gets you. If that doesnt work, then you need to take whatever steps necessary to protect your dog.....whether that means throwing the mutt in the truck next time it in your yard and taking it to the SPCA or whatever you decide to do. It doesnt sounds like the dog is a threat to people if strangers can grab it and bring it home so this one would have me stumped to. Offer the guy 20 bucks for the dog and take it to the pound or give it to a good home.....if they really dont want the dog that bad then hell, thats a case of beer and a monthly feed bill that just got cut! Keep us updated on what you do.

ya'll dont understand... let me re-itterate my point. I LIVE IN WHAT IS NOW, THE GHETTO OF LAKE CHARLES, LA. I didn't move into it, it came to me. The pet owners DO NOT FEED their dogs, they are left to fend for themselves with whatever scraps are available.Talking to my neighbors is done only with .45 in hand, a full magazine and one in the chamber. Yes, moving would be a good option, and it's on my to do list. No, the dogs are absolutely no threat to anyone, let me make that clear. But mine have already attacked other dogs that have got into my yard. Most of the "strays" will smell out my dogs and sit just within sight, which in turn, fires my dogs up to the point where I have to discipline them for barking. That is the second biggest problem, but most of all, I feel bad for the strays that sneak into my yard and don't know what they're getting into.
It saddens me, but I think my best option would be, like you said, to take them for a ride to the country when they get in my yard. Maybe I'll see them when I move out there.

YES call the animal shelter. If the animals aren't properly being taken care of or are being tossed out, the animal shelter can place them in homes that actually want the animal. It's for the animals best sake. Running loose can cause it to get run over, tear up stuff, and get in with your dogs. It's be best to get the dog somewhere where it can be placed in a home that is fit to properly take care of it.
I know what you're going through, they run loose all the time around here. One neighbor even said, if my dogs get out again, you can shoot them. That's disgusting. I think getting the animal to a loving home would be the best choice.
If your neighbor is not showing any feelings about the dog getting out, I doubt he ever will, especially if the "real owner" is locked up and not having to take responsibility for the dog.
At least get the animal shelter out to do a welfare check.

here is what I did when I had a similar problem before I moved. Talked to the owner first. If I saw the dog running again it got a free trip to the dog pound one county over. I refuse to risk my dog because someone is irresponsible. Also I never called our SPCA because then they would harrass me for haveing pits rather than take care of the loose dog and its owner.

IMO and experience, many dogs left 'loose' b/c they are not aggressive. I also live in a "ghetto" type environment near the Bronx, New York. I have had several loose dogs in proximity to mine "very willing" dog. Some dogs come running towards another dog not to attack but to see another of its kind. Other, do want to fight (dog aggressive) and others are just curious.
There have been two incidents with loose dogs. One with a dog that was in its yard, saw my dog, took an opening as an exit, and went to attack my dog. Eventually, we got this dog off my dog's mouth. Since, the dog will see my dog, sometimes bark, but will not leave his yard (even if open). I figure it learn its lesson.
The other incident was certainly a bad situation. The poor dog did not know proper dog behavior when encountering a new dog. Wait to be invited closer. In retrospect, I figure this dog was trying to come greet my dog but b/c we did not see him until it was too late my dog got a hold of his neck and chest. I had to hit my dog with a 4x4 about 4-5 times before he let go.
What did I learned from all this? First, always have a breaking stick while outside. Second, each owner is responsible/liable for his or her own dog only. Third, as long as your dog is on a leash, it is the other dog's fault.

If 14 rocks advice don't work then it sounds to me like it's time to move. If you are in a place that is that unfriendly and you can't turn in stray dogs to the pound for fear that you will be targeted, it looks like an opportunity has come your way to make a better life for your self and get out a dodge!!!! Do it! Just get out and see where life takes you. Move to a better neighborhood. No time like the present.

Plus you'd have to watch out when your dogs are in season, if you have females. That could really stir up a mess.

I read this post the other day. and wouldent you know it! Today I'm taking my dog for a walk. I turn a corner and ot of noware comes this little weiner dog mix looking thing. growling and teeth showing as he charged my boy Big Game. it all happend so fast I barely had time to grab my dog by his neck and chest and get his front half up in the air and away from this suicidel weiner dog. One chomp and there would have ben no hope. and sure enuf here comes the owner from the back yard with a one word appology "sorry" I bet he would have ben more sorry had my dog got ahold of the family pet in front of his little daughter. (who was the only one pressent besides myself before her dad came from the back yard) and before my brain could register the stupidity of this first jerk another second jerk yells from next door "if it were my pit I wouldent have picked it up" sad thing is he does own a pit. Im sure letting my 90 pound pit chew up a 20 pond mutt in front of a little girl would have done wonders for our breed.Newspaper around here would have loved to print that story. people like this should never be able to own The Great Amarican Pitbull Terrier
