Denver, CO -- Aurora leaders will discuss today whether the city should ban pit bulls.
The City Council's subcommittee on code enforcement won't make a decision, but likely will give staff a clear direction of how they would like an ordinance to be shaped.
The subcommittee - composed of three council members - is considering three options:
• A total ban, which would make it illegal for residents to own such a dog or transport one through the city without a permit.
• Allowing only existing dogs to stay, but they would have to be licensed with the city, and the owners would have to adhere to a long list of regulations, including carrying $100,000 in liability insurance.
• Allowing existing and new dogs, but owners would have to adhere to the regulations as well as other requirements, such as immediately licensing the dogs.
