Battle Creek to consider pit bull ordinance

Grand Rapids, MI -- Mich. Battle Creek is thinking about a new law aimed at keeping pit bulls from hurting children.
The city attorney is drafting a new ordinance after a 12-year-old boy was attacked a week ago.

Teare Wimberly has gashes on his legs and lips. Doctors placed him in a wheelchair so he wouldn't put weight on his stitches.

The People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals wrote a letter to the mayor urging him to either ban pit bulls or enact stronger restrictions.

If passed, the measure would require the dogs to be muzzled in public and on a short leash.

Battle Creek, Michigan is planning ordinances against pit bulls.

Clyde Robinson, City Attorney said a proposed ordinance being drafted would require pit bulls to be kept on a 3-foot leash attached to a fitted collar while in public.

The leash would have to be held by someone 18 years or older and the dog would have to be muzzled.
